Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph provides the first comprehensive, detailed account of German-speaking refugees in Ireland 1933-1945 - where they came from, immigration policy towards them and how their lives turned out in Ireland and afterwards. Thanks to unprecedented access to thousands of files of the Irish Department of Justice (all still officially closed) as well as extensive archive research in Ireland, Germany, England, Austria as well as the US and numerous interviews it is possible for the first time to give an almost complete overview of how many people came, how they contributed to Ireland, how this fits in with the history of migration to Ireland and what can be learned from it. While Exile studies are a well-developed research area and have benefited from the work of research centres and archives in Germany, Austria, Great Britain and the USA (Frankfurt/M, Leipzig, Hamburg, Berlin, Innsbruck, Graz, Vienna, London and SUNY Albany and the Leo Baeck Institutes), Ireland was long neglected in this regard. Instead of the usual narrative of "no one was let in" or "only a handful came to Ireland" the authors identified more than 300 refugees through interviews and intensive research in Irish, German and Austrian archives. German-speaking exiles were the first main group of immigrants that came to the young Irish Free State from 1933 onwards and they had a considerable impact on academic, industrial and religious developments in Ireland.

Book Transnational Perspectives on Modern Irish History

Download or read book Transnational Perspectives on Modern Irish History written by Niall Whelehan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the benefits and challenges of transnational history for the study of modern Ireland. In recent years the word "transnational" has become more and more conspicuous in history writing across the globe, with scholars seeking to move beyond national and local frameworks when investigating the past. Yet transnational approaches remain rare in Irish historical scholarship. This book argues that the broader contexts and scales associated with transnational history are ideally suited to open up new questions on many themes of critical importance to Ireland’s past and present. They also provide an important means of challenging ideas of Irish exceptionalism. The chapters included here open up new perspectives on central debates and events in Irish history. They illuminate numerous transnational lives, follow flows and ties across Irish borders, and trace networks and links with Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Australia and the British Empire. This book provides specialists and students with examples of different concepts and ways of doing transnational history. Non-specialists will be interested in the new perspectives offered here on a rich variety of topics, particularly the two major events in modern Irish history, the Great Irish Famine and the 1916 Rising.

Download or read book Dublin s Great Wars written by Richard S. Grayson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Richard S. Grayson tells the story of the Dubliners who served in the British military and in republican forces during the First World War and the Irish Revolution as a series of interconnected 'Great Wars'. He charts the full scope of Dubliners' military service, far beyond the well-known Dublin 'Pals', with as many as 35,000 serving and over 6,500 dead, from the Irish Sea to the Middle East and beyond. Linking two conflicts usually narrated as separate stories, he shows how Irish nationalist support for Britain going to war in 1914 can only be understood in the context of the political fight for Home Rule and why so many Dubliners were hostile to the Easter Rising. He examines Dublin loyalism and how the War of Independence and the Civil War would be shaped by the militarisation of Irish society and the earlier experiences of veterans of the British army.

Download or read book Evelyn Hofer written by Evelyn Hofer and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Hofer has photographed famous contemporaries and ordinary people in the Basque region, and recently, this passionate portrait photographer has turned married couples and people on the street into her subjects. But Hofer can also wait patiently for hours until her frame contains no people at all. Then she adds the pure beauty of the countryside or a venerable old building to a stark and timeless composition. Throughout her long photographic career, Hofer has sought both motion and stillness and balanced and revealed these qualities through the most diverse moments. This extensive monograph on the varied facets of her life's work shows her warm-hearted and incorruptible look at people and their surroundings. Containing photographs from Florence, London, Spain, New York, Washington, Dublin and Paris, along with a wealth of portraits, landscapes and architectural photography, this book concludes with Hofer's most recently completed work, a series of picturesque still lifes.
