Book The Rescue They Called a Raid

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost one hundred and twenty five years ago, a Scottish adventurer attempted to expand the British Empire in South Africa with the backing of a mere 500 men. He was part of a conspiracy of entrepreneurs, gold magnates and politicians, each of whom had different motives for supporting and encouraging his actions. Leander Starr Jameson's Raid failed miserably. It almost brought down the British Government, destroyed the career of one of the most eminent South African Statesmen, nearly caused a war with the South African Republic and exposed Britain to international ridicule. It was a failed attempt to expand the Empire on the cheap. This book, using a number of contemporary sources, examines the motives for Jameson's actions, the reasons for the Raid's failure and its consequences for those involved. It attempts to answer the extent of the involvement of the British Colonial Office and its Secretary of State, Joseph Chamberlain and how he, Cecil Rhodes, Paul Kruger and Jameson worked for their own and their countries best interests which were not necessarily one in the same.It also considers the part played by the dignitaries in Johannesburg and the consequences of their lukewarm support of Dr Jameson. The book contains a detailed examination of the two Inquiries which were held as a result of the Raid and a blow by blow account of the evidence given by their many witnesses. Reactions in the British Parliament and the fate of the Raiders are particular features of this work, as is how the actions of those swept up in the plans of the key players were to affect their future careers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jameson Raid was a pivotal moment in the history of South Africa, linking events from the Anglo-Boer War to the declaration of the Union of South Africa in 1910. For more than a century, the failed revolution has been interpreted through the lens of British imperialism, with responsibility laid at the feet of Cecil Rhodes. Yet, the raid was less a serious attempt to overthrow a Boer government than a wild adventure with transnational roots in American filibustering. In The Cowboy Capitalist, renowned South African historian Charles van Onselen challenges a historiography of over 120 years, locating the raid in American rather than British history and forcing us to rethink the histories of at least three nations. Through a close look at the little-remembered figure of John Hays Hammond, a confidant of both Rhodes and Jameson, he discovers the American Old West on the South African Highveld. This radical reinterpretation challenges the commonly held belief that the Jameson Raid was quintessentially British and, in doing so, drives splinters into our understanding of events as far forward as South Africa’s critical 1948 general election, with which the foundations of Grand Apartheid were laid.

Book excerpt: The author of this book joined the British South Africa Company immediately after it was formed in 1889, and from 1891 to 1893 was private secretary to Dr Jameson, in Rhodesia. He was, thus, brought into close contact with some of those who were to play a prominent part in the subject of this book. In his introduction he makes the point that any attempt to judge the behaviour of those who took part in the Jameson Raid must be unprofitable without an understanding of their psychology, what motivated them. The principal actors in this drama, he says, were not ordinary men; not a few of them were personal friends. I Dr. Leander Starr Jameson (1853-1917), a medical man (MRCS, MD), came to South Africa from Britain in 1878 after a breakdown in health. He took up practice in Kimberley where he first came into contact with Cecil Rhodes. He joined the BSA Company and when Rhodes opened up Mashonaland, (today s Zimbabwe) Jameson gave up his practice and joined the pioneering expedition to the new territory. In 1891 he became administrator of Rhodesia, and on 31st December 1895, with a force of 600 men, led a raid into the Transvaal Boer republic from Mafeking in support of a planned rising in Johannesburg, by anti-Boer Uitlanders - mainly of English extraction, organised or at least connived at by Rhodes. The rising fialed to occur and without it the raid was doomed from the outset. Only a week later Jameson s force was compelled to surrender at Doornkop. Jameson and his officers were handed over to the British by the Boer President Kruger. Jameson got 15 months jail of which he served a year before being released on grounds of ill-health; he returned to Rhodesia. Despoite this inauspicious start, his political career was just beginning. Dr Jim eventually became prime minister of Cape Colony in Rhodes footsteps and was a leading figure in the creation of the Union Of South Africa in 1909. He was made a KCMG and a baronet in 1911. An ill wind certinly blew him some good!
