Download or read book Germanna Road written by Dr. Peter G. Rainey and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the land and the landowners along Germanna Road and connecting roads, from the Rapidan River to Wilderness Run. The chapters that follow provide the history of the lower end of Orange County, especially the Alexandria Tract, with particular attention to the land in and around Lake of the Woods. My brother asked me, "Why should I care about the Alexandria Tract?" My simple answer was, "Because we are descendants of Alexander Spotswood." He got me to thinking about what motivates anyone to write and especially to research and record one's findings for posterity. When the English settler came to Virginia, he brought his law and his library. The concept of land boundaries and personal ownership were foreign until then, as was the concept of written records. The land records, journals and family records of the five generations of Spotswoods, their relatives and neighbors that lived on and near the Lake of the Woods area have been preserved, but their story has not previously been written. Similarly, the modern pioneers that came in the late 1960s and later to form the community of Lake of the Woods should have their story preserved. Of all the places within a few hours of Washington, D.C., why pick the Wilderness to develop a large lake recreational community? The answer to this question cannot be found in any published history of Orange County. Why would families sell their home of generations including the family cemetery? The simple answer of “for the right price” is not the only explanation.

Book Truth And Beauty The Story Of Pulp

Download or read book Truth And Beauty The Story Of Pulp written by Mark Sturdy and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Sturdy traces the unlikely saga of Jarvis Cocker and his ever-changing band in meticulous detail, from schoolboy promise to semi-retirement. If Cocker's career was launched by a precocious session on John Peel's show, his stated ambition was always to be on Top Of The Pops... and despite his edgy lyrics and dour manner, he has often seemed more at home as media jester than serious pop performer. Illustrated and including a comprehensive discography.

Book Death in Early New England Rites Rituals and Remembrance

Download or read book Death in Early New England Rites Rituals and Remembrance written by Robert A. Geake and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death in early New England came early and often during those harsh first decades of settlement. Epidemics, hunger, accidents and childbirth contributed to a heavy toll in New England. Disease in some cases erased entire families, and almost always affected the majority of individuals in the communities. For most families, death was still a private affair. Traditions brought over with European customs and others that were strictly American were eventually interwoven, and these ceremonies, tokens and portraits of remembrance became part of these rites and rituals of mourning. Other forms of remembrance were carved into stone with heart-wrung epitaphs, the cause of death and brief biographies. Burial sites themselves evolved from family plots and church graveyards to public, garden-like cemeteries. Historian Robert A. Geake explores the development of rites and rituals of death in this New World.

Book The Late Years of Benedict Arnold

Download or read book The Late Years of Benedict Arnold written by Jane Merrill and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Benedict Arnold, the American Revolutionary War general who attempted to surrender West Point to the British in 1780, didn't end after he betrayed his American compatriots. In the newly formed United States, he was condemned as a conspirator and in Britain, he was suspected of the same. He quickly left America, spent a short time in London, and largely operated in Canada and the Caribbean as a smuggler, a mercenary and a pariah. Although much has been written about Arnold's famous fall from grace, this book is the story of a charismatic man of vaulting ambition. With new research and photographs, it delves into his last twenty years. Arnold remains fascinating as a toppled hero and a flagrant traitor. Another American general wrote in the 1780s that Arnold "never does anything by halves"; indeed, he lived on a big scale. This study documents each of the various points of the globe where the restless Arnold operated and lived, pursuing wealth, status, and redemption.
