Download or read book Robert Shirk s People written by Theresa L. Smith and published by Rogue Phoenix Press. This book was released on 2023-07-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come back with me to the ancestors of Robert Shirk. The people and places are true, but put in a story form. The book starts out in 1912 with 12-year old Robert Shirk finding an old picture album in the attic and he wants to know more about his ancestors. His mother starts by reading a book published by a cousin on the very early relatives, going back to the Vikings. The reader will go back to 1642, over 380 years ago, when the first ancestor, John Poling, a puritan, comes from England to the present age. This book captures true American History of the average man the way it was for so many families of the time period.
Download or read book The Papers of Henry Clay written by Henry Clay and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the ten-volume series covers the career of Henry Clay from the Second Session of the Sixteenth Congress, where he engineered the second Missouri Compromise, to the presidential election of 1824, when he found himself eliminated as a candidate. Upon his return from Congress in 1821, Clay practiced law and interested himself in Transylvania University, among other things. Elected again to the House of Representatives and to the Speakership in the Eighteenth Congress, Clay resumed his leadership in national affairs; his concerns at this period were principally with the Monroe Doctrine, the Spanish and Greek revolutions, and internal improvements and the tariff. A continuing thread in the volume is the presidential campaign of 1824. Clay's correspondence illustrates the changes in political techniques brought about by the emergence of the Jacksonian type of campaign. Sectionalism, already revealed as a danger to the Union, continued as an important issue. Clay's optimistic anticipation of his election of course proved incorrect, and the volume ends with Clay in the powerful but uncomfortable position of being able, by throwing his support to one of three candidates before the House of Representatives, to choose the next President of the United States. Publication of this book was assisted by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Download or read book The Fry Site written by David M. Stothers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fry site (33Lu165) was an Ottawa (Odawa) farmstead on the lower Maumee River of Ohio that existed A.D. 1814-1832. Excavations revealed an Ottawa bark burial with trade goods, a cabin or shack, and an animal pen or compound. The material culture consisted of a wide variety of Native and Euro-American manufactured artifacts, including trade silver. The bark burial with trade goods is dated A.D. 1780-1809, slightly earlier than the farmstead occupation. The farmstead is connected with the Roche de Boeuf and Wolf Rapids bands of Ottawa that were removed to Kansas Territory in 1832. The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma are the descendants of these Maumee River Ottawa.
