His experimental demonstration of the treatment and prevention of scurvy alone led to administrative measures the probably saved the lives of more seamen then were lost in 300 years from shipwreck, naval battle, and all the other hazards of the sea. Scurvy was formerly as deadly to the sailor as plague or smallpox was to the general population. It was the Black Death of the sea. In the period from 1500, when the development of the sailing ship made long ocean voyages possible, until the nearly 1800 when Lind's discovery was put into effect, scurvy was as universal a disease of sailors as smallpox was to all persons; and just as Jenner by the discovery of vaccination was the victor over smallpox, so Lind may be regarded as the conqueror of scurvy. A bibliography of Lind's writings has been included as an appendix. It is believed that this is the first complete list of his writings in print. - Introduction.

Thomas Trotter, after studying medicine at Edinburgh, began his naval career as a surgeon's mate in 1779 and saw continuous service up to the peace of 1802, rising as a result of great abilities and the right patronage to become Physician to the Channel Fleet, and being present at the great battles of Dogger Bank in 1781 and the Glorious First of June in 1794. As Physician to the Channel Fleet, he was a major player in the conquest of scurvy and the control of typhus and smallpox in the navy. After the peace he settled in Newcastle where he produced pioneering work on alcoholism and neurosis, as a result of which he is regarded as one of the founders of the field of addiction studies. This book provides an intimate account of naval life in the great age of sail from the perspective of a surgeon, describing the impact of Enlightenment ideas and new medical techniques, and showing how improved health was a crucial factor in making possible the British fleet's great victories in this period. As early as 1921, an international convention regarding this matter was presented to govern ments of maritime countries for ratification. The First World Health Assembly, in 1948, recommended that WHO should establish, with the International Labour Of fice, a Joint Committee on the hygiene of seafarers. The first session of this Com mittee, held in 1949, defined the problems affecting the health of seamen and made a number of recommendations. In the opinion of this Joint Committee, the health of seamen called for interna tional attention for a nu mb er of reasons. By the nature of his work, the seafarer is obliged to travel from country to country and is exposed to great variations of cli mate and also to any disease that may be prevalent in the port of call. He may there fore become a carrier of disease, so that the protection of his health is of importance not only to himself and the other members of the crew but also to the populations of other countries he visits. Yet, on account ofthe nature ofhis employment, it is diffi cult to provide the seafarer with the same standard of health care that is gene rally available to other sections of the population.
