Book Tamate a King

Download or read book Tamate a King written by Diane Langmore and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 1974 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chalmers, a Scot trained by the Lodon Missionary Society, served in New Guinea for twenty-four years, from 1877 to 1901. The early, taxing years at Suau were followed by a triumphant period at Port Moresby, where, as Tamate ('a King with great power'), he was deferred to by both black and white. But later, in the declining years of his life, when he was lonely, ill and depressed, Chalmers had to struggle almost single-handed to evangelize the swamp lands of the Papuan Gulf and the Fly River. The mysterious circumstances surrounding his death at Goaribari are discussed and the consequences of his death explored. Chalmers played a central role in the history of New Guinea at a particularly crucial time and much of the history of exploration, first contact, and the imposition of European culture, religion and government is reflected in his career."--Book jacket.

Book James Chalmers of New Guinea

Download or read book James Chalmers of New Guinea written by William Robson and published by . This book was released on 1933* with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Chalmers served God as a missionary in New Guinea. He was not a man to rest content with a round of duties which might be beneficial to those who voluntarily came to the services conducted or who stayed nearby to where he lived. He regarded every person who lived in Rarotonga as being under his care and having equal claims for spiritual help. The ten years he spent in Rarotonga were a fitting prelude to the more difficult work done in New Guinea. James Chalmers was a humble man who lived for the glory of God and died as a martyr at the hands of those he loved. He had come to tell them of his Lord and Saviour who had died on behalf of sinners. This book will inspire the reader to live closer to the Saviour.
