Book James Benning s Environments

Download or read book James Benning s Environments written by Lubecker Nikolaj Lubecker and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than forty years, the experimental filmmaker James Benning has been engaged in a systematic investigation of the relations between man, landscape, and the filmic medium, and during the last decade it has become increasingly clear how much these investigations have to offer to contemporary debates about ecology, the age of the anthropocene and the potentialities of new digital technologies. In James Benning's Environments a range of international scholars highlight the thematic and formal coherence of Benning's practice, whilst providing readers with an artistic and historical context to understand his experimental film work. The volume offers a number of interpretative frameworks drawing on film theory, environmental humanities, visual culture and philosophy, explaining why Benning has emerged as one of today's essential filmmakers.

Book Screening Nature

Download or read book Screening Nature written by Anat Pick and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmentalism and ecology are areas of rapid growth in academia and society at large. Screening Nature is the first comprehensive work that groups together the wide range of concerns in the field of cinema and the environment, and what could be termed “posthuman cinema.” It comprises key readings that highlight the centrality of nature and nonhuman animals to the cinematic medium, and to the language and institution of film. The book offers a fresh and timely intervention into contemporary film theory through a focus on the nonhuman environment as principal register in many filmic texts. Screening Nature offers an extensive resource for teachers, undergraduate students, and more advanced scholars on the intersections between the natural world and the worlds of film. It emphasizes the cross-cultural and geographically diverse relevance of the topic of cinema ecology.

Book The Cinematic Footprint

Download or read book The Cinematic Footprint written by Nadia Bozak and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film is often used to represent the natural landscape and, increasingly, to communicate environmentalist messages. Yet behind even today’s “green” movies are ecologically unsustainable production, distribution, and consumption processes. Noting how seemingly immaterial moving images are supported by highly durable resource-dependent infrastructures, The Cinematic Footprint traces the history of how the “hydrocarbon imagination” has been central to the development of film as a medium. Nadia Bozak’s innovative fusion of film studies and environmental studies makes provocative connections between the disappearance of material resources and the emergence of digital media—with examples ranging from early cinema to Dziga Vertov’s prescient eye, from Chris Marker’s analog experiments to the digital work of Agnès Varda, James Benning, and Zacharias Kunuk. Combining an analysis of cinema technology with a sensitive consideration of film aesthetics, The Cinematic Footprint offers a new perspective on moving images and the natural resources that sustain them.

Book Draw it with Your Eyes Closed

Download or read book Draw it with Your Eyes Closed written by Dushko Petrovich and published by Zebra Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Draw It with Your Eyes Closed: the Art of the Art Assignment, is a unique and wide-ranging anthology featuring essays, drawings, and assignments from over 100 contributors including: John Baldessari, William Pope. L, Mira Schor, Rochelle Feinstein, Bob Nickas, Chris Kraus, Liam Gillick, Amy Sillman, James Benning, and Michelle Grabner. Practical and quixotic in equal parts, the art assignment can resemble a riddle as much as a recipe, and often sounds more like a haiku, or even a joke, than a clear directive. From introductory exercises in perspective drawing to graduate-level experiments in societal transformation, the assignment coalesces ideas about what art is, how it should be taught, and what larger purpose it might, or might not, serve. The book is a written record of an evolving oral tradition. Bringing together hundreds of assignments, anti-assignments, and artworks from both teachers and students from a broad range of institutions, Draw It with Your Eyes Closed serves as an archive and an instigation, a teaching tool and a question mark, a critique and a tribute."--Amazon.

Book Culture Environment and Ecopolitics

Download or read book Culture Environment and Ecopolitics written by Nick Heffernan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture, Environment and Ecopolitics brings together a series of new reflections on historical and current ecological and environmental predicaments. By way of critical interventions in environmental thought, and through engagements with literary, visual, architectural, philosophical, and more general cultural studies scholarship, this collection of essays by an international panel of writers breaks new interpretative ground. While techno-science has in some quarters been elevated to a master discourse of humanity’s salvation, charged with providing a magical ‘fix’ for planetary ecological dilemmas, the focus of our volume is on the importance of cultural reflection for bringing matters of local and global import to light. Moving from the abstractions of eco-critical utopianisms to the concrete identity of the land in the poetry of John Clare, from British Petroleum’s attempts to re-brand climate change to examples of eco-architecture, and much more besides, these essays exemplify ways in which eco-political thought and practice might now be theorized. The collection is framed by a substantial editors’ introduction which offers but one contextualization of the ideas and critical trajectories that follow. Culture, Environment and Ecopolitics will allow readers to discover original intersections and argumentative cross-references across contested terrains in a world increasingly troubled by ecological crises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Pulitzer Prize winner James B. Stewart comes the extraordinary story of American hero Rick Rescorla, Morgan Stanley security director and a veteran of Vietnam and the British colonial wars in Rhodesia, who lost his life on September 11. When Rick Rescorla got home from Vietnam, he tried to put combat and death behind him, but he never could entirely. From the day he joined the British Army to fight a colonial war in Rhodesia, where he met American Special Forces’ officer Dan Hill who would become his best friend, to the day he fell in love with Susan, everything in his remarkable life was preparing him for an act of generosity that would transcend all that went before. Heart of a Soldier is a story of bravery under fire, of loyalty to one’s comrades, of the miracle of finding happiness late in life. Everything about Rick’s life came together on September 11. In charge of security for Morgan Stanley, he successfully got all its 2,700 men and women out of the south tower of the World Trade Center. Then, thinking perhaps of soldiers he’d held as they died, as well as the woman he loved, he went back one last time to search for stragglers. Heart of a Soldier is a story that inspires, offers hope, and helps heal even the deepest wounds.

Book After Uniqueness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erika Balsom
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-21

Download or read book After Uniqueness written by Erika Balsom and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images have never been as freely circulated as they are today. They have also never been so tightly controlled. As with the birth of photography, digital reproduction has created new possibilities for the duplication and consumption of images, offering greater dissemination and access. But digital reproduction has also stoked new anxieties concerning authenticity and ownership. From this contemporary vantage point, After Uniqueness traces the ambivalence of reproducibility through the intersecting histories of experimental cinema and the moving image in art, examining how artists, filmmakers, and theorists have found in the copy a utopian promise or a dangerous inauthenticity—or both at once. From the sale of film in limited editions on the art market to the downloading of bootlegs, from the singularity of live cinema to video art broadcast on television, Erika Balsom investigates how the reproducibility of the moving image has been embraced, rejected, and negotiated by major figures including Stan Brakhage, Leo Castelli, and Gregory Markopoulos. Through a comparative analysis of selected distribution models and key case studies, she demonstrates how the question of image circulation is central to the history of film and video art. After Uniqueness shows that distribution channels are more than neutral pathways; they determine how we encounter, interpret, and write the history of the moving image as an art form.

Book Financial Modeling fifth edition

Download or read book Financial Modeling fifth edition written by Simon Benninga and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 1049 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantially updated new edition of the essential text on financial modeling, with revised material, new data, and implementations shown in Excel, R, and Python. Financial Modeling has become the gold-standard text in its field, an essential guide for students, researchers, and practitioners that provides the computational tools needed for modeling finance fundamentals. This fifth edition has been substantially updated but maintains the straightforward, hands-on approach, with an optimal mix of explanation and implementation, that made the previous editions so popular. Using detailed Excel spreadsheets, it explains basic and advanced models in the areas of corporate finance, portfolio management, options, and bonds. This new edition offers revised material on valuation, second-order and third-order Greeks for options, value at risk (VaR), Monte Carlo methods, and implementation in R. The examples and implementation use up-to-date and relevant data. Parts I to V cover corporate finance topics, bond and yield curve models, portfolio theory, options and derivatives, and Monte Carlo methods and their implementation in finance. Parts VI and VII treat technical topics, with part VI covering Excel and R issues and part VII (now on the book’s auxiliary website) covering Excel’s programming language, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and Python implementations. Knowledge of technical chapters on VBA and R is not necessary for understanding the material in the first five parts. The book is suitable for use in advanced finance classes that emphasize the need to combine modeling skills with a deeper knowledge of the underlying financial models.

Book Avant Garde Film

  • Author : Scott MacDonald
  • Publisher : CUP Archive
  • Release : 1993-02-26
  • ISBN : 9780521388214
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Avant Garde Film written by Scott MacDonald and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1993-02-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have seen the proliferation of forms of independent cinema that challenge the conventions of mass-market commercial movies from within the movie theatre. Avant-Garde Film examines fifteen of the most suggestive and useful films from this film tradition. The films discussed include No. 4 (Bottoms) by Yoko Ono, Wavelength by Michael Snow, Serene Velocity by Ernie Gehr, Print Generation by J. J. Murphy, Standard Gauge by Morgan Fisher, Zorns Lemma by Hollis Frampton, The Ties that Bind by Su Friedrich, From the Pole to the Equator by Yervant Gianikian and The Carriage Trade by Warren Sonbert. Through in-depth readings of these works, Scott MacDonald takes viewers on a critical circumnavigation of the conventions of movie going as seen by filmmakers who have rebelled against the conventions. MacDonald's discussions do not merely analyse the films; they provide a useful, accessible, jargon-free critical apparatus for viewing avant-garde film and communicate the author's pleasure in exploring 'impenetrable' works.
