Book excerpt: It's opening game of the football season at Florida Field, and Monk DeVane, a former teammate of Zack Chasteen's, invites Zack and his girlfriend to a halftime party in one of the exclusive skyboxes. But they find chaos---there's a bomb under the chair of Darcy Whitehall, Monk Devane's boss and the rakish Jamaican owner of Libido, a chain of anything-goes Caribbean resorts. The bomb turns out to be a dud, but someone is putting the squeeze on Darcy Whitehall, and Monk DeVane enlists Zack to help protect his employer. When Zack arrives in Jamaica things quickly go to hell---more bombs (this time, for real), gnarly Jamaican politics, and the kinky diversions at Libido, where the prime spectator sport is watching guests frolic on the naked flume ride. As if that weren't enough, Zack's snooping around puts him in jeopardy with Freddie Arzghanian, king of the Caribbean money launderers. Suspenseful, laugh-out-loud funny, and with larger-than-life characters, Jamaica Me Dead is Bob Morris at his wicked best.

Book excerpt: The prescient book that first linked specific weather disasters with man-made global warming . . . now in its second edition. “The most readable and intelligent summary of global warming science and politics I have read... a valiant effort to make people actually care about global warming.” — Bill McKibben, New York Observer “What Bob Reiss did to elevate our awareness of the destruction of the rain forest in The Road to Extrema, he has now done for global warming... Reiss bypasses political rhetoric and engages us in storytelling, showing us how the greenhouse effect is changing our lives, person by person, community by community, nation by nation.” — Terry Tempest Williams, author of Leap and Refuge, and winner of the John Muir Award and the Robert Marshall Award “From massive waves in the Maldives to tornadoes over Tennessee, from the halls of Congress to the hard disks of scientists, Bob Reiss has taken climate change and made it personal. The Coming Storm is the layman’s guide to global warming—fair, urgent, and deeply unsettling.” — Ted Conover, winner of the National Book Critics’ Circle Award for Newjack “With a storyteller’s gifts, Bob Reiss shows how a series of freakish and colossally destructive weather events awakened scientists, politicians, and ordinary people to the momentous stakes of a changing climate... a compelling narrative of the people and events that have shaped this ever more urgent debate.” — Eugene Linden, author of The Future in Plain Sight and The Parrot’s Lament Free of unnecessary scientific jargon and filled with the human and political dimensions of this story, this book reads like a mystery novel where you already know the terrifying outcome. Adding a new preface by the author, this edition brings back to life the compelling account of the link between climate and weather disasters.

Book excerpt: Moneyball meets the documentary "The Union: The Business Behind Getting High" in this non-fiction book that explores the culture of cannabis, from its humble beginnings as a textile fiber in 2727 BC, to its illegalization during the Great Depression, to its increasing use as medicinal treatment -- all culminating in the annual event for marijuana aficionados everywhere: the Cannabis Cup. After spending three years researching his novel Baked, Mark Haskell Smith turns his focus on the one event that intrigued him in the fascinating world of the cannabis culture: the Cannabis Cup competition. What makes a strain of marijuana award-winning? he wonders. Who would risk everything to grow the good stuff? Is this really a nearly $100 billion a year industry? Alternating between California, the hub of the legalization and decriminalization debate, and Amsterdam, where the world's preeminent cannabis festival takes place each year, Mark discovers a compelling world where science meets agriculture, and hedonism toes the line of criminality. Combining wit, curiosity, and frankness, Heart of Dankness reveals the world of underground botany and outlaw farming, where "strain hunters" risk fines, imprisonment, and reputation to develop amazing weed -- and, ultimately, battle for the coveted Cannabis Cup, and millions of dollars.

Book Our Woman in Jamaica

Download or read book Our Woman in Jamaica written by James Ward and published by Cool Millennium. This book was released on with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the ballot-box and the bullet aren’t incompatible … Jamaica, 1980. A general election is in the offing. The left-of-centre People's National Party stands a chance of winning a third term of radical social reform. Ties with Russia and Cuba will likely be strengthened. The IMF will be shown the door. Newly hatched revolutionary movements, like the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and the JRG in El Salvador, will take firm encouragement. The powers that be in London or Washington are not prepared to countenance any of that. Not at all. Unfortunately, the only person available to address the situation is someone the Brits would rather not acknowledge. At just twenty-five, Ruby Parker and MI6 have a fractious shared history. She has already been written off by just about everyone in that organisation who matters. Written as a prequel to the other books in the Tales of MI7 series, Our Woman in Jamaica can be enjoyed by old and new readers alike.

Book Codeswitching on the Web

Download or read book Codeswitching on the Web written by Lars Hinrichs and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a corpus of private email from Jamaican university students, this study explores the discourse functions of Jamaican Creole in computer-mediated communication. From this participant-centered perspective, it contributes to the longstanding theoretical debates in Creole studies about the 'Creole continuum'. This book will likewise be useful to researchers of computer-mediated communication, the use and development of non-standardized languages, language ecology, and code switching. The central methodological issue in this study is code switching in a written medium, a neglected area of study at the moment since most literature in code switching research is based on spoken data. The three analytical chapters present the data in a critical discussion of established and more recent theoretical approaches to code switching research. The fields of research that will benefit from this book include pragmatics and discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, Creole studies, English as a world language, the study of language in computer-mediated communication, and linguistic anthropology.

Book Where Did My Life Go Homeless and Out of Business

Download or read book Where Did My Life Go Homeless and Out of Business written by K.D. Sanders and published by Kevin Dale Sanders. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Where Did My Life Go? Homeless and Out of Business” is by far one of the most raw, powerful, and engaging reads that I’ve come across in a long, long time. Author K.D. Sanders offers readers a very personal and unaltered look into his life, thoughts, and feelings as he underwent some very rough times as a homeless man while experiencing that many of us will never even come close to in our ordinary lives. I say this and the book may seem quite gloomy at first, but I also would say there’s another side to it – I interpret the book as having a sort of theme about personal redemption and keeping headstrong even through all the bad things that life can throw at you. The author manages to keep his spirits high even while dealing with unfortunate circumstances and for that I admire his courage. As well as this, the text is written in a way that flows nicely due to a relatively relaxed undertone and there are plenty of general musings about the author’s opinion on homeless life in general that I found to be very thought-provoking (and even sobering at times). Overall, I enjoyed the read and I found it to be honestly quite refreshingly new compared to what I’ve been coming across these days. Definitely worth checking out. - Amazon Review
