Download or read book Travel in Towns written by Martin J.H. Mogridge and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-07-19 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new look at the theory of traffic congestion, in the light of recent reassessments of the extensive surveys in London of traffic plans and speeds and, in particular, of journey speeds by all forms of transport. The issues have been heatedly debated in professional journals and at professional meetings, since the policy conclusions are profound and far-reaching, involving a redirection of transport policy away from road building and towards improvement of public transport systems.

Download or read book Elements of Access written by David M. Levinson and published by . This book was released on 2017-12-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing in cities makes sense except in the light of accessibility. Transport cannot be understood without reference to the location of activities (land use), and vice versa. To understand one requires understanding the other. However, for a variety of historical reasons, transport and land use are quite divorced in practice. Typical transport engineers only touch land use planning courses once at most, and only then if they attend graduate school. Land use planners understand transport the way everyone does, from the perspective of the traveler, not of the system, and are seldom exposed to transport aside from, at best, a lone course in graduate school. This text aims to bridge the chasm, helping engineers understand the elements of access that are associated not only with traffic, but also with human behavior and activity location, and helping planners understand the technology underlying transport engineering, the processes, equations, and logic that make up the transport half of the accessibility measure. It aims to help both communicate accessibility to the public.

Book Lewis Carroll s Alice and Cognitive Narratology

Download or read book Lewis Carroll s Alice and Cognitive Narratology written by Francesca Arnavas and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age that is witnessing a growing interest in narrative studies, cognitive neuroscientific tools, mind studies and artificial intelligence hypotheses. This book therefore aims to expand the exegesis of Carroll's "Alice" books, aligning them with the current intellectual environment. The theoretical force of this volume lies in the successful encounter between a great book (and all its polysemous ramifications) and a new interpretative point of view, powerful enough to provide a new original contribution, but well grounded enough not to distort the text itself. Moreover, this book is one of the first to offer a complete, thorough analysis of one single text through the theoretical lens of cognitive narratology, and not just as a series of brief examples embedded within a more general discussion. It emphasises in a more direct, effective way the actual novelty and usefulness of the dialogue established between narrative theory and the cognitive sciences. It links specific concepts elaborated in the theory of cognitive narratology with the analysis of the "Alice" books, helping in this way to discuss, question and extend the concepts themselves, opening up new interpretations and practical methods.
