Book Jagannatha in Historical Perspectives

Download or read book Jagannatha in Historical Perspectives written by Rabinārāẏaṇa Dāśa and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through different phases of history, Jagannatha culture has attracted not only the pilgrims and the believers, but also has been a focal point of research in terms of historical antecedents, processes and cultural ramifications. Eclectic as well as syncretistic by nature, the Jagannath culture cannot be understood in terms of one single cult. This has been emphasized in the present monograph in various papers written by scholars of history, archaeology, anthropology and Sanskrit literature etc. Critical use of different kinds of sources - archaeological, epigraphic, literary and archival - is an important aspect of this volume. Emphasis has been put on the influence of Vaishnavite, Saivite, Jaina and Buddhist traditions in the making ofJagannatha culture. Besides, issues relating to other shrines in Jagannath temple complex, management of the temple in different periods, and various rituals followed are also discussed. An account of various Jagannatha temples in West Bengal and importance ofJagannatha among Assamese Hindus imply the pan-Indian network of the Jagannatha culture. Thus, this volume tries to incorporate multiple historical perspectives associated with the Jagannatha culture.

Book Literary History Towards a Global Perspective

Download or read book Literary History Towards a Global Perspective written by Anders Pettersson and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 1196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary History: Towards a Global Perspective is a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). Initiated in 1996 and launched in 1999, it aims at finding suitable methods and approaches for studying and analysing literature globally, emphasizing the comparative and intercultural aspect. Even though we nowadays have fast and easy access to any kind of information on literature and literary history, we encounter, more than ever, the difficulty of finding a credible overall perspective on world literary history. Until today, literary cultures and traditions have usually been studied separately, each field using its own principles and methods. Even the conceptual basis itself varies from section to section and the genre concepts employed are not mutually compatible. As a consequence, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for the interested layperson as well as for the professional student, to gain a clear and fair perspective both on the literary traditions of other peoples and on one's own traditions. The project can be considered as a contribution to gradually removing this problem and helping to gain a better understanding of literature and literary history by means of a concerted empirical research and deeper conceptual reflection. The contributions to the four volumes are written in English by specialists from a large number of disciplines, primarily from the fields of comparative literature, Oriental studies and African studies in Sweden. All of the literary texts discussed in the articles are in the original language. Each one of the four volumes is devoted to a special research topic.

Download or read book From Obscurity to Light written by Devika Rangachari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to reintegrate women into the socio-political milieu of early medieval Orissa. Its sources are inscriptions, mostly Sanskrit, that date from the seventh century to the end of the reign of the Imperial Ganga ruler, Anantavarman Codagangadeva (CE 1078-1147). The evidence indicates that royal and non-royal women had varying but undeniably important roles to play in the socio-political fabric of this prominent regional entity. The Bhauma-Kara dynasty (c. mid-eighth/ninth-late tenth century) that witnessed the rule of six women, four of them in succession, is a case in point. In addition, the palpable presence of several other royal and non-royal women is consistently documented in the epigraphic record. This is an aspect that has received very little attention in secondary works, thereby rendering this study a pioneering one. The work follows on from Rangachari’s earlier Invisible Women, Visible Histories: Gender, Polity and Society in North India (7th to 12th century ad), which had focused on important gendered aspects of early medieval north India through an analysis of literary and epigraphic sources of Kashmir, Kanauj, Bengal and Bihar. The invisibilization of women, whereby their presence is routinely ignored or trivialized, was, similarly, its underlying essence. Please note: This title is co-published with Manohar Publishers, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

This volume brings together scholarly works that re-examine and re-define the concept of transition by looking into a range of subjects including religion, culture, gender, caste and community networks, maritime and mercantile modes, ideas of nationalism and historiographies across geographical and temporal settings. With contributions by leading scholars from South Asia, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient history, modern Indian history, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.

Book The Portrait of an Artist as a Pathographer On Writing Illnesses and Illnesses in Writing

Download or read book The Portrait of an Artist as a Pathographer On Writing Illnesses and Illnesses in Writing written by Jayjit Sarkar and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-05-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the various intersections between illness and literature across time and space, The Portrait of an Artist as a Pathographer seeks to understand how ontological, phenomenological and epistemological experiences of illness have been dealt with and represented in literary writings and literary studies. In this volume, scholars from across the world have come together to understand how the pathological condition of being ill (the sufferers), as well as the pathologists dealing with the ill (the healers and caregivers), have shaped literary works. The language of medical science, with its jargon, and the language of the every day, with its emphasis on utility, prove equally insufficient and futile in capturing the pain and suffering of illness. It is this insufficiency and futility that makes us turn towards the canonical works of Joseph Conrad, Samuel Beckett, William Carlos Williams, Virginia Woolf, Kazuo Ishiguro, Miroslav Holub as well as the non-canonical António Lobo Antunes, Yumemakura Baku, Wopko Jensma and Vaslav Nijinsky. This volume helps in understanding and capturing the metalanguage of illness while presenting us with the tradition of ‘writing pain’. In an effort to expand the definition of pathography to include those who are on the other side of pain, the essays in this collection aim to portray the above-mentioned pathographers as artists, turning the anxiety and suffering of illness into an art form. Looking deeply into such creative aspects of illness, this book also seeks to evoke the possibility of pathography as world literature. This book will be of particular interest to undergraduate, postgraduate and research students, as well as scholars of literature and medical humanities who are interested in the intersections between literary studies and medical science.
