Download or read book Jacquard Weaving and Designing Classic Reprint written by T. F. Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacquard Weaving and Designing The contents of the following pages have been derived from a long course of art and technical training, together with a lengthened practical experience in textile manufacturing and designing; during which time I received much valuable assistance from many kind friends - especially Mr. B. Ashenhurst, when master of the Belfast Technical School, and his brother, of Bradford; also Mr. John Mitchell, of Belfast and Glasgow - which I thankfully acknowledge. To supply a treatise that would be alike suitable to the manu facturer, the workman, and the student would be a difiicult matter. To explain each point so fully that it would be clear to every person would make it wearisome to those having a knowledge of the subject. I have therefore endeavoured to keep the descriptions as concise as is com patible with a fairly clear explanation, which I hope will be considered the wisest plan to adopt; and, while quite aware of the many short comings of the work, I venture to hope that it will prove a valuable assistance to those wishing to improve their knowledge of jacquard weaving and designing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technology of Textile Design: Being a Practical Treatise on the Construction and Application of Weaves for All Textile Fabrics, With Minute Reference to the Latest Inventions for Weaving An experience of several years as Principal of The Textile Department Of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, has shown the author of this work the necessity and value of a Text-book on Textile Designing and Weaving. The absence of any such guide to the study has induced him to prepare this work, which he trusts will be useful not only to the student as a Text - book, but also to the manufacturer as a book of reference. The results arrived at by the completion Of this work, will be greatly-enhanced in their value to practical men, when assured that a life-time Of actual service in the mills of this country and Europe has been enjoyed by the author, and that the ripe experience of such practical knowledge has been closely interwoven with the results herein fully set forth. The favor so generously accorded his previous book entitled The jacquard Machine Analyzed and Explained; the Preparation Of Jacquard Cards, and Practical Hints to Learners of Jacquard Designing, greatly encouraged him in the prepara tion of this work, and it is sent forth with the earnest desire that it may likewise win the approval of the public and aid in developing and extending a deeper interest in the subject. T. F. BELL. Belfast, 1894. It affords me much satisfaction to add a few words of introduction to this work of my friend Mr. Bell. I cannot pretend to criticise his explanation of technical processes, but, from an examination of the proof-sheets, I am convinced that the book will be found an invaluable aid to students of both art and technical schools. We already possess numerous text-books on designing as an art, as also on the technical processes of weaving, &c., and on the materials of manufacture. Mr. Bell has aimed at bringing the technical and artistic sides of the subject together in a practical form, and has thus provided us with a valuable handbook. Though we have a Government Department of Science and Art, a knowledge of both branches is seldom united in the same individual. The artist is too often deficient in the science of his craft; while the man of science not unfrequently shows contempt for art. The author of this volume is peculiarly qualified for the task he has set himself, being a practical manufacturer as well as a designer of long experience, and thoroughly learned in the science of his subject. His book will supply a long-felt need. GEORGE TROWBRIDGE, Head-Master Government School of Art, Belfast.

Book Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics Classic Reprint written by Herman O. Werner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Designing and Construction of Woven Fabrics The designing paper mostly in use is laid off in squares con taining 8 x 8, or 64 blocks. The sizes of the blocks and squares vary according to the different sizes preferred by each designer and according to the kind of fabrics to be designed. The point paper, designated by 8 x 8, is usually made with squares of 1 in size, and larger. If a design is to be made which requires a large number Of threads the designing paper with the smaller squares is to be preferred; if, on the other hand, designs are to be made which require but a small number of threads, the paper with the larger squares is preferable. The number of blocks to the square warpwise is always indicated first. Other designing papers used are 8 x 6, 8 x 7, 8 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x x 16, 4 x 12, 6 x 12, 10 x 10, 12 x x 12, etc., etc. The heavy lines, or squares, serve as a unit for measure ment, as well as in helping to count Off the required number of blocks. In this way they help to find the size of auv design on point paper, at a glance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jacquard Machine, Analyzed and Explained: With an Appendix on the Preparation of Jacquard Cards, and Practical Hints to Learners of Jacquard Designing Very little has been written upon the Jacquard machine, and the fabrics produced by it; and nothing at all has been heretofore published in this country with regard to the machines and systems, as employed here. Greatly assisted by the guidance, help and advice of Mr. T. C. Search, President of the Philadelphia d104ile Association, and Vice-President and Chairman of the Committee of Instruction of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, the author gives here the results of his practical experience on this subject, with a very detailed description of the methods of procedure with the Jacquard and accompanying machines, in the different branches of d104ile Manufacture. Book The History and Principles of Weaving by Hand and by Power Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History and Principles of Weaving by Hand and by Power Classic Reprint written by Alfred Barlow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Principles of Weaving by Hand and by Power The Art of Weaving forms the most extensive and im portant part of the Textile Manufactures, whether considered on account of its commercial value or for its usefulness, variety, or beauty of its products. It also calls forth a greater number of mechanical appliances and ingenious contrivances than any other Art, and is on that account alone always a source of interest to the Engineer and the Mechanician, as well as to the Manufacturer and the Weaver. Formerly the Art depended almost entirely upon the handicraft skill of the weaver, and his contrivances were limited in their combinations to produce designs of any considerable extent. They were, also, cumbersome and complicated, and entailed an amount of labour and patience that would much astonish the weaver of the present day. But, by the introduction of the Jacquard Machine and the Power Loom during the present century, the whole system of weaving, with some few exceptions, has been changed, and practically become a New Art. During the same period the Lace Frame has been in vented, and by the application of the Jacquard apparatus to it for the production of figured lace, it has created an entirely new and important branch of manufacture. The numerous inventions that have led to this result seem to have culminated in this admirable machine, which for ingenuity is unsurpassed in the whole range of mechanism. Yet the Loom with its products, wherein the wealth of our Nation is folded up, and upon which we are so de pendent for personal comfort, health, and cleanliness, is far behind other important Arts and Manufactures in respect to treatises upon its varied processes. The few works that have appeared are intended for technical readers, and are either confined to certain branches of the Art or limited in extent, and do not treat upon the subject generally. To supply this deficiency is the object of the present work, which is based upon and includes a series of Articles written for the Proprietors of Engineering. Book Theory and Practice of Damask Weaving Classic Reprint

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Damask Weaving Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Kinzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Damask Weaving The different technicalities of damask weaving have not yet been the subject of an exhaustive treatise. So far only scattered articles in books and trade papers have dealt with this department of textile manufacture. The books treat briefly of the principles of the art, the journals give minute descriptions of novelties in looms. A desire has therefore been expressed by manufacturers of damask to possess a manual in which the present condition of the industry. Is fully dealt with. This work is intended to respond as fully as possible to this desire, for it instructs not only in the simple applications of Jacquard weaving to the industry, but in, the accessory processes which it has been found advantageous to add. The fabrics mentioned in illustration of the theoretical part of the work have been made from original patterns, and will contribute to a general comprehension of the whole subject. In the same way, the figures given in the text and in the plates will much facilitate the understanding of the methods and give a general view of the matters treated of. Book Grammar of Textile Design Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grammar of Textile Design Classic Reprint written by Harry Nisbet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of d104ile Design A textile fabric may contain only one element of woven design and yet be profusely embellished without having recourse to colour. Many white and grey linen and cotton, and also white silk, damask and brocade fabrics, are good examples of that class. The construction of such fabrics, and of damasks in particular, is frequently based upon some simple elementary weave which is simply reversed to develop the figure and ground portions, thereby causing warp to preponderate on the surface in some parts, and weft in others hence the contrasting tones of light which enable the figure and ground portions to be distinguished. The most elaborately decorated fabrics will often times be found to contain not more than three or four different varieties of simple weaves effectively introduced in the scheme of decoration; whilst most fabrics employed for domestic pur poses, and many others, contain but one element of design of a simple character and specially suited for a specific purpose. An examination of such fabrics will show that warp and weft are interwoven in some simple definite order or sequence that occurs with perfect regularity throughout the entire fabric.
