Book Muslim Christian Relations and Inter Christian Rivalries in the Middle East

Download or read book Muslim Christian Relations and Inter Christian Rivalries in the Middle East written by John Joseph and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-06-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the Jacobites (Syrian Orthodox Christians), who, like their Aramaean ancestors, established a presence far beyond their ancestral lands. Professor John Joseph has found this historic Christian community to be an admirable case study in inter-communal relations in the Middle East. Of special interest is the discussion of how Western religious rivalries, Catholic and Protestant, have affected the religious tensions in the Middle East. Through Joseph's first-hand acquaintance with the region and mastery of previously unmined sources, he displays an intimate and thorough knowledge of his subject. Written with color, clarity, and extreme care, the book offers an objective recounting of a story that is at times full of passion and violence.

Download or read book Narrative of a Visit to the Syrian Jacobite Church of Mesopotamia written by Horatio Southgate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Visit to the Syrian (Jacobite) Church of Mesopotamia: With Statements and Reflections Upon the Present State of Christianity in Turkey, and the Character and Prospects of the Eastern Churches This little book is introductory to a series which the author has long had in contemplation, and which, if sufficient encouragement is given to the undertaking, will in due time appear, according as the pressure of other cares may allow him to finish them. Their sole object and design is to set forth the Eastern Churches in their real character, to show their wants, their condition and their prospects, with a view to engaging a deeper interest and sympathy in their behalf. He addresses himself to Churchmen, for they alone will fully appreciate the considerations which he has to present. To them, and to them only does he believe the work of restoring and strengthening those Churches to be committed, and they alone are able to perform it. As a specimen of the character of the works which he has thus under taken, and to supply information on a point upon which some will expect to meet with it in this volume, the following is subjoined from a treatise on the Doctrines, Ministry, Worship, Ritual, Usages and Religious Condition of the Syrian Church, - which is partly ready for the press. Book A Brief History of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church

Download or read book A Brief History of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church written by Sarah Knight and published by . This book was released on 2023-06-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Syrian Christians in Kerala, India, are an ancient community whose history has often been distorted by European colonialists and missionaries. Dr Sarah Knight has scoured libraries and private archives across Kerala, as well as many of the great libraries in Europe - in the UK, the Netherlands, and the Vatican - to put together a summary of the history of this often misunderstood ancient Christian community. This fresh and authentic perspective on the Syrian Christians' history, brings out the narrative which has survived within the community itself, despite the many periods of adversity and oppression when other interests attempted to rewrite their history. Dr Knight has combined her insider knowledge - she was born and raised within the community - with years of scholarship, which also underpinned her PhD from SOAS in the University of London. The book charts the history of the Syrian Christians in Kerala ('Malankara') from its origins with mission of St Thomas, through the migrations of Syrian clergy and families from the fourth century, through the adversity in the face of European colonialization and missionary work, to the current troubles caused by factions demanding they abandon their allegiance to the Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers from the Third Woodbrooke-Mingana Symposium on Arab Christianity and Islam (September 1998) on the theme of "Arab Christianity in Bilâd al-Shâm (Greater Syria) in the pre-Ottoman Period". It presents aspects of Syrian Christian life and thought during the first millennium of Islamic rule. Among the eight contributing scholars are Sidney Griffith on ninth-century Christological controversies, Samir K. Samir on the Prophet Muhammed seen through Arab Christian eyes, Lawrence Conrad on the physician Ibn Butlân, and Lucy-Anne Hunt on Muslim influence on Christian book illustrations. There is also a foreword by the Syrian Orthodox Archbishop of Aleppo. The picture that emerges is of community life developing in its own way and finding a distinctive character, as Christians responded to the social and intellectual influences of Islam.

Download or read book Kerala Christian Sainthood written by Corinne G. Dempsey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kerala Christian Sainthood is an ethnography-based study that celebrates the multi-vocal function of saints. Drawing on pilgrim anecdotes, shrine practices, official hagiographies, and regional lore, author Corinne Dempsey demonstrates how the business of saints routinely extends beyond their capacity as earthly conduits of miraculous power. Saintly characters described in this book, hailing from the religiously pluralistic south Indian state of Kerala, tend not only to the health and happiness of individual devotees but help craft and express the multiple identities and complex power relations of their devotional communities as well. Throughout the study, Dempsey highlights the traditions of Sr. Alphonsa of Bharananganam (1910-1946) and St. George the martyr, two figures who reflect the many preoccupations of Kerala sainthood. Sr. Alphonsa, native of Kerala and famous for her life of suffering and posthumous power, stands in line to be canonized by the Vatican. St. George, the caped dragon slayer imported to Kerala by Syrian merchants and later by Portuguese and British colonizers, is today partially debunked by Rome. These two figures, while differing dramatically in temperament, nationality, age of cult, and Vatican standing, boast a vast popular appeal in Kerala's Kottayam district. In examining Sr. Alphonsa and St. George, Dempsey shows how Kerala's saint traditions reflect devotees' hybrid identities in both colonial and postcolonial times. This ethnography of Christian sainthood within a Hindu cultural context, of "foreign" traditions adopted by native practice, and of female sanctity negotiated through patriarchal expectation is poised at a number of intersections. Dempsey provides not only a comparative study of cultures, religions, and worldviews, but also a unique grounding for contemporary ethnographic, post-colonial, and feminist concerns.
