Book excerpt: "Recognized as a saint by both Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians alike, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) produced many narrative poems that have rarely been translated into English. Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug's homilies, this volume contains two of his homilies on Jacob. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. Download or read book Isaac the Syrian s Spiritual Works written by Isaac (Bishop of Nineveh) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Isaac the Syrian lived the solitary life in the 7th century. He was born in Qatar and subsequently lived in present day Iraq and Iran. After life as a monk, then briefly as a bishop, he withdrew to live the solitary life. These discourses are primarily for solitaries to consolidate them in the love and mercy of God. Isaac returns frequently in this work to the theme of joy as it relates to repentance and also to inebriation – even as it were, as a participation in divine Nature. In ch.5, he discusses theosis. Discussions of divinization are not that common to his writings. Already Isaac has been able to cross all kinds of boundaries, both geographical and ecclesial. Now with theosis in ch. 5 there is possibility of ongoing discussion in Asian Christianity, especially with India in relation to Advaita. In this volume, the text of Isaac V has also been included because of the light which it sheds on Apocatastasis, of increasing interest in academic and ecclesial circles. Isaac III was originally edited and translated by Sabino Chialà of Bose. A French translation was subsequently done by Andre Louf."--

Download or read book The Letters of John of Dalyatha written by John (of Dalyatha) and published by Gorgias PressLlc. This book was released on 2006 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John of Dalyatha or John Saba, the "Elder," is the author of these Letters. He was born in North West Iraq and was a monk during the eighth century in a monastery at Qardu near the Turkish border. After seven years in community, he received permission to live the solitary life in the mountains of Dalyatha where he remained most of his life. In these Letters, John outlines the itinerary of those who are baptized: purification through repentance, fasting, prayer, struggle with demons; sanctification through silence, tears, wonder, divine light; union through contemplation, praise, assistance of the angels - leading to the vision of God. In the Letters, John of Dalyatha presents the Christian life after baptism as an "anticipated resurrection," the new life in the New World. And he describes this life within the mystery of communion with God in the image of whose divine beauty John says humans are created: "Show me Your beauty which is within me." (Letter 15.6) Throughout, John of Dalyatha speaks about God in human language as perhaps no other Christian author has done."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Moses in the Quran and Islamic Exegesis written by Brannon M. Wheeler and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relating the Muslim understanding of Moses in the Qur'an to the Epic of Gilgamesh, Alexander Romances, Aramaic Targums, Rabbinic Bible exegesis, and folklore from the ancient and medieval Mediterranean, this book shows how Muslim scholars authorize and identify themselves through allusions to the Bible and Jewish tradition. Exegesis of Qur'an 18:60-82 shows how Muslim exegetes engage Biblical theology through interpretation of the ancient Israelites, their prophets, and their Torah. This Muslim use of a scripture shared with Jews and Christians suggests fresh perspectives for the history of religions, Biblical studies, cultural studies, and Jewish-Arabic studies.

Download or read book The Bible in History written by Robert B. Waltz and published by Robert B. Waltz. This book was released on with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible in History. A study of the history, folklore, and occasionally even the mathematics underlying the Bible. A sort of dictionary of scholarly material you likely won’t find elsewhere. Dedicated to Elizabeth Rosenberg, Patricia Rosenberg, and Catie Jo Pidel. Please understand that this is not a Biblical commentary. Also, while I try very hard to avoid actual theological discussions, the work is very much based on "external evidence" -- the manuscripts of the Bible, the evidence of other historical records, the findings of science, the folklore about the Bible. Some of this can be offensive to some, particularly those who try to find exact literal truth in the Bible. I hope you will accept it (or else not read it :-) in that light. If you are still interested, there is a lot of historical background about the Bible here -- not always direct links to the Bible, but the context of the nations among whom the Israelites lived. There is no Biblical mention of (say) Nabopolassar of Babylon, but his actions would deeply influence Judean history. Knowing even a little of that history can help understand the Bible. Also, where there are variant readings in the manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible or the New Testament, I note it. This may mean that we are uncertain what the Bible says -- and hence what it means. I try either to recover the original meaning or, in some cases, to assess the meanings of both readings. And then there are the tidbits of science and folklore and anything else I can think of.... The result is a grab bag. Some parts may be useful, some may not. The idea is to browse and see what strikes your fancy. With luck, you'll understand more about the Bible after doing so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Angelic Conflict rages around us. This is not a world war. This is a war beyond the world—an invisible warfare between the forces of Satan and the forces of God. Ultimately God will win. Long before the advent of human history, Satan arrogantly rebelled against his Creator. He wanted to make himself “like the Most High” and recruited one-third of the angels to follow him. God justly condemned Satan and his fallen angels to spend eternity in the lake of fire. Satan appealed the sentence, claiming unfairness—questioning how a loving God could cast His creatures into hell. Planet Earth is now the battleground where Satan seeks to outmaneuver God, prove the judgment unfair, and foil the execution of his sentence. Satan will not suffer defeat without an intense struggle. God created man to resolve this angelic conflict. Human volition is the focal point of the firestorm. Will man choose God’s grace plan of salvation or follow the arrogant system of Satan? Through the freewill decisions of mankind, God proves to Satan His perfect justice and love again and again. As believers, it is imperative we understand this spiritual warfare that surrounds us. Satan uses every ruse at his command to derail and discredit those who are in Christ. For our defense, God has provided an overwhelming advantage in a powerful suit of spiritual armor. With it we can withstand the “flaming missiles of the evil one” and become heroes in the invisible war. God is glorified as we lock shields and stand firm on His power and Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is the story of God's interaction with his creation. It is a story that occurs over time, in many places, and through many events. It includes the lives and lessons learned by many people from many cultures. It's often easy to lose sight of the way in which God's story fits together when our primary way of looking at the Bible is a bit here and a bit there.
