Download or read book The 1810 Grimm Manuscripts The First Complete English Translation of the 1810 Handwritten Manuscripts The Beginnings of the Kinder und Hausm rchen Children s and Household Tales written by Oliver Loo and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Brothers Grimm published their now world famous "Childrens and Household Tales" in 1812, they had sent their manuscript containing approximately 51 tales to their friend Clemens Brentano, who also wanted to publish children's tales. The brothers asked him to return their manuscript when he was finished with it, but he never did. While they went on to publish their tales, their own copies of the original manuscripts for the first volume of the tales do not exist anymore. By accident or fortunate circumstance, the manuscript they sent to Brentano survived and can be read today. "The 1810 Grimm Manuscripts" is the first English language translation of the Grimms "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" as they were in the Fall of 1810. It is the first written documentation of the tales as the brothers heard and saw them. It shows the very first written documentation of the Grimms versions of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Frog King and many other tales.

Book The Writing of Spirit

Download or read book The Writing of Spirit written by Sarah M. Pourciau and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary thought has been profoundly shaped by the early-twentieth-century turn toward synchronic models of explanation, which analyze phenomena as they appear at a single moment, rather than diachronically as they develop through time. But the relationship between time and system remains unexplained by the standard account of this shift. Through a new history of systematic thinking across the humanities and sciences, The Writing of Spirit argues that nineteenth-century historicism wasn’t simply replaced by a more modern synchronic perspective. The structuralist revolution consisted rather in a turn toward time’s absolutely minimal conditions, and thus also toward a new theory of diachrony. Pourciau arrives at this surprising and powerful conclusion through an analysis of language-scientific theories over the course of two centuries, associated with thinkers from Jacob Grimm and Richard Wagner to the Russian Futurists, in domains as disparate as historical linguistics, phonology, acoustics, opera theory, philosophy, poetics, and psychology. The result is a novel contribution to a pressing contemporary question—namely, what role history should play in the interpretation of the present.

Book Fairy Tales as Literature of Literature

Download or read book Fairy Tales as Literature of Literature written by Lothar Bluhm and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales are consistently examined as literature out of literature. Through the history of their creation and transformation, it becomes apparent how literary models were re-declared and transformed into the well-known fairy tale narratives, in the course of the editing process by the Brothers Grimm, essentially by Wilhelm Grimm. By means of a series of model studies – including Rapunzel, Jorinde und Joringel and Der Jude im Dorn – it is shown that the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, contrary to their traditional assessment as 'folk tales', are of literary origin and have a literary character themselves.
