Book Jacob Behmen

Download or read book Jacob Behmen written by Alexander Whyte and published by Book Jungle. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Whyte (1836 - 1921) entered the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland. In 1909 he became principal, and professor of New Testament literature, at New College, Edinburgh. His works include Characters and Characteristics of William Law (1893), Bunyan Characters (4 Vols, 1893-1908), Samuel Rutherford (1894), An Appreciation of Jacob Behmen (1895), and Lancelot Andrewes and his Private Devotions (1895). Jacob Behmen (1575 - 1624) was a German shoemaker and a leading mystic. He was a Christian mystic and theologian. He is considered an original thinker within the Lutheran tradition. An excerpt reads, " While working with his hands, Jacob Behmen's whole life was spent in the deepest and the most original thought; in piercing visions of GOD and of nature; in prayer, in praise, and in love to GOD and man. Of Jacob Behmen it may be said with the utmost truth and soberness that he lived and moved and had his being in GOD. Jacob Behmen has no biography because his whole life was hid with CHRIST in GOD."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessions of Jacob Boehme NE day last winter, in a moment which I must confess to have been idle, I took up Dr. Alexander Whyte's Appreciation of Behmen as, following William Law, he calls him. There I found the following passage While we have nothing that can properly be called a biography of Jacob Behmen, we have ample amends made to us in those priceless morsels of auto biography that lie scattered so plentifully up and down all his books. And nothing could be more charming than just those incidental and unstudied utterances of Behmen about himself. Into the very depths of a passage of the profoundest speculation Behmen will all of a suddenvi confessions OF jacob boehme. Book Converse in the Spirit

Download or read book Converse in the Spirit written by Kevin Fischer and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underlining the importance to both of a living creative and spiritual tradition, Converse in the Spirit argues that the relationship between Blake and Boehme was a meeting of like minds that transcended place and time, that each regarded himself as part of a community of vision and aspiration, and believed that any predominant form of thought and understanding was only partial. Through this, Boehme is used to illuminate the more esoteric aspects of Blake, and Blake those of Boehme. Their writings are not a simple or direct description on the movements of divinity, nor of what divinity is or is not, but a medium for approaching it, and for participating in the creation of the sacred, the giving of personal, individual form to the divine.

Book An Introduction to Jacob Boehme

Download or read book An Introduction to Jacob Boehme written by Ariel Hessayon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together for the first time some of the world’s leading authorities on the German mystic Jacob Boehme, to illuminate his thought and its reception over four centuries for the benefit of students and advanced scholars alike. Boehme’s theosophical works have influenced Western culture in profound ways since their dissemination in the early 17th Century, and these interdisciplinary essays trace the social and cultural networks as well as the intellectual pathways involved in Boehme’s enduring impact. The chapters range from situating Boehme in the 16th Century Radical Reformation, to discussions of his significance in modern theology. They explore the major contexts for Boehme’s reception including the Pietist movement, Russian religious thought and Western esotericism, as well as focusing more closely on important readers: the religious radicals of the English Civil Wars and the later English Behmenists; literary figures such as Goethe and Blake, and great philosophers of the modern age, among them Schelling and Hegel. Together, the chapters illustrate the depth and variety of Boehme’s influence and a concluding chapter addresses directly an underlying theme of the volume – asking why Boehme matters today, and how readers in the present might be enriched by a fresh engagement with his apparently opaque and complex writings.
