Five broad design criteria for the development of the six interest scales are outlined, e.g., minimum reliability of 0.80. Each scale is organized into three parts: (1) occupational choices; (2) educational preferences; and (3) activity interests. Seven major applications of the VIS are described: individual assessment, diagnosis, selection and placement, guidance, prediction, evaluation, and research.
