Book Jackson County Georgia Newspaper Clippings the Jackson Herald 1891 1895

Download or read book Jackson County Georgia Newspaper Clippings the Jackson Herald 1891 1895 written by Faye Stone Poss and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These old newspapers were fascinating as well as being a valuable source of genealogical and historical information about olden days and the families of Jackson and surrounded counties. A variety of newspaper clippings are included, such as marriage notices, deaths and obits, murders, births, fights and shootings, legal notices, etc. Many of the articles merely gave an insight as to the characteristics, personalities, and occupations of various persons, their illnesses or accidents. Quite a few of the articles were about African Americans, and a few political notices were included. By no means was The Jackson Herald a dull newspaper! There was always something of interest going on in Jackson or surrounding counties, that made the news. In those days the purchase of a bicycle made the news, as well as how many hours it took that person to ride from Jefferson to Athens on his bicycle (including how many flats he had), or some other destination! Anesthesia was fairly new, and an operation using anesthesia, whether amputating an arm or leg, or an appendix, made the news. This volume is a continuation of four previous volumes of Jackson County newspaper clippings, starting in June 1875, by the author, Faye Stone Poss. It contains 424 + xii pages, a full-name index, a "Schedule of Legal Notices," and 16 illustrations.

Download or read book The Sacred Flame of Love written by Christopher H. Owen and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempting to restore subtlety and nuance to the study of southern religion, The Sacred Flame of Love ranges across the entire nineteenth century to chronicle the evolution of the institutions, theology, and social attitudes of Georgia Methodists in light of such phenomena, trends, and events as slavery, class prejudice, republicanism, population growth, economic development, sectional politics, war, emancipation, and urban growth. In connecting Methodist history with the larger social transformation of nineteenth-century Georgia, Christopher H. Owen uncovers a story of considerable complexity and variety. Because Georgia Methodists included people from every social class, few generalizations apply properly to all of them. For many years they were loosely united by common adherence to the ideals of Wesleyan evangelicalism, but economic and political developments would gradually accentuate Methodist social divisions and weaken even this bond. Indeed, deviating far from the conception of unchanging and asocial southern religion often held by scholars, Owen sees both church and society undergoing enormous change in the nineteenth century.
