Book excerpt: This is the Oz book which L. Frank Baum considered his best. It starts quietly enough with Trot and Cap'n Bill rowing along a shore of the Pacific Ocean to visit one of the many caves near their home on the California coast. Suddenly, a mighty whirlpool engulfs them. The old sailorman and the little girl are miraculously saved and regain consciousness to find themselves in a sea cavern. (To this day, Trot asserts she felt mermaid arms about her during those terrible moments under water.) From here on, one perilous adventure crowds in upon another. In Jinxland they meet the Scarecrow who takes charge of things once Cap'n Bill is transformed into a tiny grasshopper with a wooden leg. An exciting royal reception greets the adventurers upon their return to the Emerald City.
Download or read book The Wonderful World of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully annotated volume collects three of Baum's fourteen Oz novels in which he developed his utopian vision and which garnered an immense and loyal following. The Wizard of Oz (1900) introduces Dorothy, who arrives from Kansas and meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and a host of other characters. The Emerald City of Oz (1910) finds Dorothy, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry coming to Oz just as the wicked Nome King is plotting to conquer its people. In Baum's final novel, Glinda of Oz (1920), Dorothy and Princess Ozma try to prevent a battle between the Skeezers and the Flatheads. Tapping into a deeply rooted desire in himself and his loyal readers to live in a peaceful country which values the sharing of talents and gifts, Baum's imaginative creation, like all great utopian literature, holds out the possibility for change. Also included is a selection of the original illustrations by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Download or read book Out of Oz written by Gregory Maguire and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Maguire’s work is melodic, symphonic, and beautiful; it is dejected and biting and brave. How great that people flock to these magical novels.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review Bestselling author Gregory Maguire’s remarkable series, The Wicked Years, comes full circle with this, his fourth and final excursion across a darker, richer, more complex landscape of “the magical land of Oz.” Out of Oz brilliantly reimagines L. Frank Baum’s world over the rainbow as wracked with social unrest—placing Glinda the good witch under house arrest and having the cowardly Lion on the lam from the law as the Emerald City prepares to make war on Munchkinland. Even Dorothy makes a triumphant return in Maguire’s magnificent Oz finale—tying up every loose green end of the series he began with his classic Wicked, the basis for the smash hit Broadway musical.

This book was released on 1985-09-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return to L. Frank Baum’s wonderful world of Oz with this illustrated children’s book series. Peter, the lad from Philadelphia, joins forces with Jack Pumpkinhead to rescue Ozma and the Emerald City from conquest by Mogodore, the infamous Red Baron of Baffleburg. Even with the help of Belfaygor of Bourne, whose beard grows at an alarming rate, and the consistently charming and rhyming Iffin—which, as everyone knows, is a griffin who’s lost his grrrr—their efforts seem in vain. The horrendous Scare City, an enchanted pirate sack that can scoop up entire armies, a magic dinner bell, and a forbidden flagon are mixed up in the adventure, too—but it takes the legendary Red Jinn of Ev to provide the red magic that could help Jack Pumpkinhead save the Land of Oz. Praise for the Oz series “Where the young stay young and the old grow young forever—these books are for readers of all ages.”—Ray Bradbury “The land of Oz has managed to fascinate each new generation. . . . The Oz books continue to exert their spell . . . and those who read [them] are often made what they were not—imaginative, tolerant, alert to wonders.”—Gore Vidal “I was raised with the Oz books, and their enchantment, humor and excitement remain with me. They are still a joy and a treasure. I welcome this Oz revival.”—Stephen R. Donaldson

Download or read book The Royal Book of Oz Illustrated written by Ruth Plumly Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Book of Oz (1921) is the fifteenth in the series of Oz books, and the first, by Ruth Plumly Thompson, to be written after L. Frank Baum's death. Although Baum was credited as the author, it was written entirely by Thompson. Beginning in the 1980s, some editions have correctly credited Thompson,[1] although the cover of the 2001 edition by Dover Publications credits only Baum. The original introduction claimed that the book was based on notes by Baum, but this has been disproved. Baum's surviving notes, known as "An Oz Book" [2] are known from four typewritten pages found at his publisher's, but their authenticity as Baum's work has been disputed. Even if genuine, they bear no resemblance to Thompson's book.
