Book excerpt: The story of Jack Mason is part of the Theodore Thinker series, in which Theodore recalls various tales told to him of adventures on the sea by Jack. It was originally a children's book printed in 1855. As such, the stories are unlikely to be considered children's tales today. Some of the subjects include: the death of a small boy, the sale of a girl, and the ethics of killing animals. The story emphasizes Christianity and a Bible is a prominent figure in many of the stories. Jack Mason: The Old Sailor was written by Francis Channing Woodworth. He was born in Colchester, Connecticut in 1812, and died en route from New York to Savannah on a ship in 1859. During his life, he was initially a publisher, then became a preacher. He moved into writing children's stories after he became ill and discontinued preaching. He wrote numerous books for children, including Youth's Book of Germs (1851), Buds and Blossoms from Our Own Garden (1854), and Stories About the Country (1857). He also served as the editor for The Youth's Cabinet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Mason had been to sea a great many times when I first knew him, and he has been a great many times since. He has sailed in a ship almost all over the world. Such a host of stories as he can tell! Why, I do believe if he could find little boys and girls to talk to, he would begin in the morning as soon as he had got through his breakfast, and do nothing but tell stories about what he has seen, until it was time to go to bed at night. I don't know but he would want to stop once or twice to eat. Jack loves a good dinner as well as anybody. Jack is the one that you see in the picture, with his pea-jacket on, and a book in his hand. He is in a ship, telling his stories now to that boy sitting on a coil of rope. See, the boy is looking right at the old man, hearing all he says. I wonder what Jack is talking about now. He must be telling one of his best stories, I guess; for the boy lifts his head up, as much as to say, "Dear me! who ever heard of such a thing!"

Book The Riddle of the Caswell Mutiny

Download or read book The Riddle of the Caswell Mutiny written by Seamus Breathnach and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1875 captain George ''Bully' Best found himself in Buenos Aires without a crew and without a cargo. His men had for the most part deserted him. Before making his way to Antofogasta, where he loaded up with Saltpetre (nitrate), he recruited a' mixed crew' of Greeks and British. The British refused to sail with the Greeks, and rather than allow them onshore to see the British Consul, captain Best beat them and put them in irons. Even before the Caswell sailed for Queenstown on January 1 1876, an Irishman and a German jumped ship and were never heard of again. Obvious tensions might lead one to expect a British mutiny. And perhaps this might have happened had not the Greeks beaten them to it. For some unexplained reason the Greeks, under the influence of 'Big George' Peno, mutinied and killed the captain, the first and second mates, and the black Welsh steward. All four bodies were lashed to an anchor and thrown overboard. By February two of the mutineers, the brothers Pistoria, escaped by boat up the river Plate to Buenos Aires. The remainder drifted under Greek command until March 11th, when the British counter mutinied and killed two of their captors. A third mutineer was brought back to Queenstown to be tried for Murder on the High Seas. Young Christos Emmanuel Bombos found himself imprisoned with a sixty three year old Fenian named Thomas Crowe. Both men provided the spectacle of a 'double hanging' in Cork's male prison. A full eyewitness account is given of the executions, which happen to be one of the most striking events in nineteenth century penological literature. Three years later one of the escaped mutineers was arrested in Monte Video and a second trial was staged in Cork. Of the sixteen persons who set out from Buenos Aires: two jumped ship; four were murdered in the mutiny; two were murdered in the counter-mutiny; one was hanged in 1876 and another in 1879; and six returned to tell the tale.

This new Second Edition increases coverage by 35%! There are two sequences: Part I - which now includes more than 17,000 entries- is an alphabetical list of pseudonyms followed by the writer's real name. Book Ella Wood The Complete Trilogy

Download or read book Ella Wood The Complete Trilogy written by Michelle Isenhoff and published by Michelle Isenhoff. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes all three books in the Ella Wood trilogy: ELLA WOOD As slavery pushes the nation toward civil war, Emily must battle her father in her own bid for freedom. She’s prepared to pay any price to escape the plantation and attend a northern university newly opened to women. Meanwhile Thaddeus Black, her handsome and unwanted suitor, simply won't take no for an answer. While her mind is willing to strike out alone, her heart stubbornly refuses to accept that a choice for independence must be a choice against love. "Poetic" and "nuanced," Ella Wood is the story of a young woman standing at the edge of war and struggling with questions of morality, purpose, and love. BLOOD MOON Charleston lies in ruins and so, it seems, does Emily’s future. She’s been banished from Ella Wood over her vocal disapproval of slavery, and her relationship with Thad comes to an impasse when his support of her university career falters. Stepping out alone into a war-torn future will require all the fortitude she can muster. In the midst of such uncertainty, she finds that hope rises from ashes, determination grows with adversity, and love can take root in the most stubborn of hearts. "Richly textured," "absorbing," and "impeccably researched," Blood Moon was reader-nominated for a Cybils Award. EBB TIDE When the Union navy fires on Charleston, Emily must flee to Ella Wood—and to a father who has never forgiven her for attending the Maryland Institute against his will. There, she grapples with Jack’s secret plans for the plantation and his final admonition that she carry them to fruition. But as a woman under the authority of her father, evoking even the slightest change may prove too much to hope for. In the meantime, old jealousies place Emily’s life in danger, and her desperate hope for Jovie’s return begins to fade. As the war rumbles to its conclusion, she must draw upon every ounce of courage in one final bid for love and freedom. All three books in the Ella Wood trilogy are clean and wholesome. Don't miss this sweeping Southern romance!

Book The Dime Novel in Children s Literature

Download or read book The Dime Novel in Children s Literature written by Vicki Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their rakish characters, sensationalist plots, improbable adventures and objectionable language (like swell and golly), dime novels in their heyday were widely considered a threat to the morals of impressionable youth. Roundly criticized by church leaders and educators of the time, these short, quick-moving, pocket-sized publications were also, inevitably, wildly popular with readers of all ages. This work looks at the evolution of the dime novel and at the authors, publishers, illustrators, and subject matter of the genre. Also discussed are related types of children's literature, such as story papers, chapbooks, broadsides, serial books, pulp magazines, comic books and today's paperback books. The author shows how these works reveal much about early American life and thought and how they reflect cultural nationalism through their ideological teachings in personal morality and ethics, humanitarian reform and political thought. Overall, this book is a thoughtful consideration of the dime novel's contribution to the genre of children's literature. Eight appendices provide a wealth of information, offering an annotated bibliography of dime novels and listing series books, story paper periodicals, characters, authors and their pseudonyms, and more. A reference section, index and illustrations are all included.
