This book was released on 2006-06-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the image and identity of émigré painters, sculptors and graphic artists from Nazi Germany in Britain between 1933 and 1945. It focuses on a neglected field of Exile Studies, that of exiled artists in Britain. Methodologies used in this study have been developed by Exile Studies and History of Art, but also by Postcolonialism, scholars of which usually apply their ideas to the Afro-Asian emigration of the second part of the twentieth century. Thus this study represents methodologically a new way of looking at the emigration from Nazi Germany. Identity and Image is divided into five chapters: After an introductory Chapter One (historiography of the topic, methodology of the study, structure of the book), Chapter Two establishes socio-political patterns of emigration and provides an historical framework for Chapters Three and Four, which concentrate on the image and identity of the refugee artist, the former based on written sources and the latter on visual material. In detail, Chapter Three analyses the British image of the refugee artists and their works on the one hand and the émigrés' self-representations on the other, the latter exemplified by refugee organisations (the Free German League of Culture/Freier Deutscher Kulturbund, the Austrian Centre, the Anglo-Sudeten Club and the Czech Institute) and institutions founded by émigré artists (Jack Bilbo's Modern Art Gallery and Arthur Segal's Painting School). Chapter Four examines the works produced in internment and those exhibited and produced for the refugee organisations discussed in Chapter Three. Chapter Five discusses the results of this study in the light of three postcolonial concepts: diaspora communities, the notion of home and the gendered identity of the refugee. The appendix lists all painters, sculptors and graphic artists from Nazi Germany in Britain with biographical details. Apart from visual and written sources discussed for the first time, there are two major results of the study: First, although the artists were united as refugees, this unity did not lead to a unity in art - "refugee art" is a construction put forward by the British press and the refugee organisations, particularly the Free German League of Culture. Second, contrary to claims that modern art was international and formed a universal unity that "transgressed" nationality, neither the West/Europe nor modernism form unities; instead, in the 1930s and 1940s, cultures in Europe constructed conceptions of other European cultures on the basis of nation-state identities.

Book Cultural Heritage and Prisoners of War

Download or read book Cultural Heritage and Prisoners of War written by Gilly Carr and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the numerous examples of creativity produced by POWs and civilian internees during their captivity, including: paintings, cartoons, craftwork, needlework, acting, musical compositions, magazine and newspaper articles, wood carving, and recycled Red Cross tins turned into plates, mugs and makeshift stoves, all which have previously received little attention. The authors of this volume show the wide potential of such items to inform us about the daily life and struggle for survival behind barbed wire. Previously dismissed as items which could only serve to illustrate POW memoirs and diaries, this book argues for a central role of all items of creativity in helping us to understand the true experience of life in captivity. The international authors draw upon a rich seam of material from their own case studies of POW and civilian internment camps across the world, to offer a range of interpretations of this diverse and extraordinary material.

Book Ark of Civilization

Download or read book Ark of Civilization written by Sally Crawford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opening decades of the twentieth century, Germany was at the cutting edge of arts and humanities scholarship across Europe. However, when many of its key thinkers--leaders in their fields in classics, philosophy, archaeology, art history, and oriental studies--were forced to flee to England following the rise of the Nazi regime, Germany's loss became Oxford's gain. From the mid-1930s onwards, Oxford could accurately be described as an ark of knowledge of western civilization: a place where ideas about art, culture, and history could be rescued, developed, and disseminated freely. The city's history as a place of refuge for scientists who were victims of Nazi oppression is by now familiar, but the story of its role as a sanctuary for cultural heritage, though no less important, has received much less attention. In this volume, the impact of Oxford as a shelter, a meeting point, and a center of thought in the arts and humanities specifically is addressed, by looking both at those who sought refuge there and stayed, and those whose lives intersected with Oxford at crucial moments before and during the war. Although not every great refugee can be discussed in detail in this volume, this study offers an introduction to the unique conjunction of place, people, and time that shaped Western intellectual history, exploring how the meeting of minds enabled by libraries, publishing houses, and the University allowed Oxford's refugee scholars to have a profound and lasting impact on the development of British culture. Drawing on oral histories, previously unpublished letters, and archives, it illuminates and interweaves both personal and global histories to demonstrate how, for a short period during the war, Oxford brought together some of the greatest minds of the age to become the custodians of a great European civilization.

With urgency and humor, Andrew Laties brings tales of Kurt Schwitters' dramatic life into resonance with stories of Laties' own forty years performing, encouraging readers to seize the hour and sing along with Ur Sonata. Book People Who Knew Jack as Opposed to People who Don t Know Jack

Download or read book People Who Knew Jack as Opposed to People who Don t Know Jack written by Jack Kenworthy and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My manuscript tracks my life from a small town in Massachusetts, to life at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base as a teenager, to the University of Florida as a student-athlete, to Brevard County (in Florida) as a community college baseball coach and health/physical education instructor (for a total of 30 years), to employment as a fitness club exercise floor staff member (for over 15 years). While my life has involved mostly sports and fitness, I have enjoyed making the acquaintances of thousands of people. I find a variety of people to be interesting, enjoyable, and humorous. My experiences (with my family, with younger adults at the community college, and with older adults at the fitness club) provide me with several meaningful and humorous memories. People Who Knew Jack can best be described as compilation of humorous (sometimes corny) anecdotes. I also try to intersperse my reflections, values, and opinions on life throughout the book.

Book You Can t Win

Download or read book You Can t Win written by Jack Black and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. A true lost classic, Jack Black's autobiography was a bestseller in 1926 and went through five printings. It is an amazing journey into a hobo underworld, freight hopping around the still Wild West at the end of the century, becoming a member of the yegg (criminal) brotherhood and a highwayman, learning the outlaw philosophy from Foot-and-a-half George and the Sanctimonious Kid, getting hooked on opium, doing stints in jail or escaping, sometimes with the assistance of ever-corrupt cops and judges. This new edition includes an afterword by Michael Disend that tells some of what became of Black after he wore out the outlaw life and washed up in San Francisco, wrote this book, and reinvented himself. YOU CAN'T WIN was the blueprint for William Burroughs' first novel, Junky.
