Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jack Adams, the Mutineer Fifty years ago, a ship to be at sea for three months, and no punishment, to occur was a rare circumstance indeed. But it was destined that the voyage should not be completed without recourse to the cat. On a complaint from the master, Mr. Fryer, that Matthew Quinta] had been guilty of mutinous behavior and insolent language, he was seized up, and received two dozen lashes. This punishment was not by any means adequate to the offence for, in voy ages of discovery, strict discipline is more requisite. Than at any other time. Left, as it were, without a friend to assist, the small ship's company in their frail bark, traqe the wide ocean. They are alone, and without a hope of assistance. The fire caused by negligence might destroy them - the drunkard might occasion mis chief, which no after-thought could rem edy - and the skulker, by being absent from his station, might lose a mast, or split a sail. It is, therefore due to the character of Bligh to say, that up to this time, although his language was coarse and disreputable, he never had been a tyrant. The first introduction of the cat gave occasion to many remarks between decks. Adams was the man who declared it absolutely necessary, and who said Quin tal had got merely what he deserved. This new Second Edition increases coverage by 35%! There are two sequences: Part I - which now includes more than 17,000 entries- is an alphabetical list of pseudonyms followed by the writer's real name. Part II is an alphabetical list of writers cited in Part I-more than 10,000 writers included-providing brief biographical details followed by pseudonyms used by the wrter and titles published under those pseudonyms. Download or read book The Seaforth Bibliography written by Eugene Rasor and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2009-04-17 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable work is a comprehensive historiographical and bibliographical survey of the most important scholarly and printed materials about the naval and maritime history of England and Great Britain from the earliest times to 1815. More than 4,000 popular, standard and official histories, important articles in journals and periodicals, anthologies, conference, symposium and seminar papers, guides, documents and doctoral theses are covered so that the emphasis is the broadest possible. But the work is far, far more than a listing. The works are all evaluated, assessed and analysed and then integrated into an historical narrative that makes the book a hugely useful reference work for student, scholar, and enthusiast alike. It is divided into twenty-one chapters which cover resource centres, significant naval writers, pre-eminent and general histories, the chronological periods from Julius Caesar through the Vikings, Tudors and Stuarts to Nelson and Bligh, major naval personalities, warships, piracy, strategy and tactics, exploration, discovery and navigation, archaeology and even naval fiction. Quite simply, no-one with an interest and enthusiasm for naval history can afford to be without this book at their side.
