Book Diminutives across Languages Theoretical Frameworks and Linguistic Domains

Download or read book Diminutives across Languages Theoretical Frameworks and Linguistic Domains written by Stela Manova and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a number of issues in current morphological theory from the point of view of diminutive formation, such as the role of phonology in diminutives and hypocoristics and consequently its place in the overall architecture of grammar, i.e. phonology-first versus syntax/morphology-first theoretical analyses, diminutives in the L1 acquisition of typologically diverse languages, and the borrowing of non-diminutive morphology for the expression of diminutive meanings, among others. Among the peculiarities of diminutive morphology discussed are the relation between diminutives and mass nouns, the avoidance of diminutives in plural contexts in some languages, and the relatively frequent semantic bleaching and reanalysis of diminutive forms cross-linguistically. Special attention is paid to the debate on the head versus modifier status of diminutive affixes (corresponding to high versus low diminutives in alternative analyses), with data from spoken and sign languages. Overall, the volume addresses a number of topics that will be of interest to scholars of almost all linguistic subfields and per

Book The Ethics of Humour in Online Slavic Media Communication

Download or read book The Ethics of Humour in Online Slavic Media Communication written by Lilia Duskaeva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ethics of Humour in Online Slavic Media Communication is devoted to research on how the rules of humour used online media are changing and how these changes rearrange the traditions of speech interaction in media communication. The authors of the book are experienced researchers in the field of Slavic media linguistics and represent five neighbouring countries: Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Poland. The research in the volume is based on the data from Slavic languages. The diversity and, at the same time, relative proximity of Slavic languages make it possible to put separate studies into a wider comparative context, in order to reveal the general and ethno-cultural patterns in using means of communicative etiquette; it helps define the ethno-cultural factors behind the formation of such means. Speech practice of humour creation shows the creative potential of all languages, including the ones with a small number of speakers – Slovak and Belarusian, which have the status of state languages, but are strongly influenced by international languages (English and Russian). This volume is a valuable resource for researchers in the field of Slavic studies.

Book Weaving Complementary Knowledge Systems and Mindfulness to Educate a Literate Citizenry for Sustainable and Healthy Lives

Download or read book Weaving Complementary Knowledge Systems and Mindfulness to Educate a Literate Citizenry for Sustainable and Healthy Lives written by Małgorzata Powietrzyńska and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving Complementary Knowledge System and Mindfulness to Educate a Literate Citizenry for Sustainable and Healthy Lives contains 24 chapters written by 33 authors, from 9 countries. The book, which consists of two sections on mindfulness in education and wellness, is intended for a broad audience of educators, researchers, and complementary medicine practitioners. Members of the general public may find appeal and relevance in chapters that advocate transformation in a number of spheres, including K-12 schools, museums, universities, counselling, and everyday lifestyles. Innovative approaches to education, involving meditation and mindfulness, produce numerous advantages for participants in schools, museums, and a variety of self-help contexts of everyday life. In several striking examples, critical stances address a band wagon approach to the application of mindfulness, often by for-profit companies, to purportedly improve quality of education, in contexts where learning has been commodified and ideologies such as neoliberalism have been mandated by politicians and implemented by policy makers. In different international contexts, Buddhist roots of mindfulness are critically reviewed by a number of authors. Chapters on wellness focus on complementary practices, including art therapy, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Iridology, and yoga. Foci in the wellness section include sexual health, prescription drug addiction, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and a variety of common ailments that can be addressed using complementary medicine. New theories, such a polyvagal theory, provide scope for people to become aware of their bodies in different ways and maintain wellbeing through changes in lifestyle, heightened self-awareness, and self-help.

Book Languages Cultures Worldviews

Download or read book Languages Cultures Worldviews written by Adam Głaz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book explores languages and cultures (or linguacultures) from a translation perspective, resting on the assumption that they find expression as linguacultural worldviews. Specifically, it investigates how these worldviews emerge, how they are constructed, shaped and modified in and through translation, understood both as a process and a product. The book’s content progresses from general to specific: from the notions of worldview and translation, through a consideration of how worldviews are shaped in and through language, to a discussion of worldviews in translation, both in macro-scale and in specific details of language structure and use. The contributors to the volume are linguists, linguistic anthropologists, practising translators, and/or translation studies scholars, and the book will be of interest to scholars and students in any of these fields.
