Une telle entreprise suppose à la fois, et la maîtrise de l’ensemble de l’œuvre, dont la personne du Christ imprègne chaque ligne de ses gestes ou de ses paroles, et la lecture plus approfondie de passages particuliers. Aussi traîte-t-on comme par surcroît mais pertinemment de la plupart des questions plus générales relevant de l’introduction générale à l’évangile étudié. L’ouvrage de M. Quesnel met tout spécialement en relief deux dimensions de la christologie matthéenne. La lecture de Matthieu fait passer d’une reconnaissance tâtonnante de Jésus comme Messie historique d’Israël à son identification expresse comme unique et vrai Fils de Dieu. Ce titre est le centre de la confession de foi ; par rapport à lui, les autres dénominations de Jésus semblent s’effacer comme pour figurer au second plan. Jésus étant Fils de Dieu, sa présence parmi les hommes est du même coup celle de Dieu même au cœur de l’histoire, qui, dès lors, change de régime. Matthieu débute par l’annonce de la naissance de l’Emmanuel, « Dieu avec nous » (1,23) ; il se termine par la promesse que le Christ ressuscité est désormais « avec » nous « jusqu’à la fin du monde » (28,20). Le départ de Jésus inaugure une nouvelle modalité du monde appelée à se réaliser par l’Église. Ainsi, chez Matthieu et par l’approche du mystère du « Christ de Dieu » (16,16), passe-t-on comme de plain-pied de Jésus à l’Église. Théologie du Christ et théologie de l’Église y sont en effet indissociables ; même si l’on doit les y saisir séparément, l’une mène immanquablement à l’autre. Matthew articulates the identity of Israel's God around the Father-Son relation.
