Book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive

Download or read book Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive written by J. Parker Lamb and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive documents the role played by mechanical engineers in the development of locomotive design. The steam engine and the mechanical engineering profession both grew directly out of the Industrial Revolution's need for sources of power beyond that of men and animals. Invented in England when coal mining was being developed, the practical steam engine eventually found numerous applications in transportation, especially in railroad technology. J. Parker Lamb traces the evolution of the steam engine from the early 1700s through the early 1800s, when the first locomotives were sent to the United States from England. Lamb then shifts the scene to the development of the American steam locomotive, first by numerous small builders, and later, by the early 20th century, by only three major enterprises and a handful of railroad company shops. Lamb reviews the steady progress of steam locomotive technology through its pinnacle during the 1930s, then discusses the reasons for its subsequent decline.

Book Rio Grande Steam Locomotives

Download or read book Rio Grande Steam Locomotives written by Donald J. Heimburger and published by Heimburger House Publishing Company. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features 140 photographs and 26 folio drawings, as well as maps, timetables and equipment rosters from 1891 to 1956, when the last standard gauge steam locomotive roamed the Rio Grande. It traces the development of Rio Grande’s steam locomotives from the early days to the last days of steam when locomotive fires were dropped and diesels took over the task of hauling tonnage through the beautiful but rugged Western terrain. Rio Grande Steam Locomotives is a book that will interest not only Rio Grande fans, but also steam locomotive fans as well. Besides giving an overview history of the railroad, the book highlights numerous standard gauge steam locomotives from the 0-6-0 and 4-6-2 to the giant 2-8-8-2 and 4-6-6-4. Two special chapters are included in the book: one chapter features Rio Grande steamers built by the American Locomotive Company and its predecessor companies, and another chapter features more builder’s photographs from the Baldwin Locomotive Works. There are 14 chapters in all, each adding more valuable information and photographs to the exciting steam locomotive history of this popular Western railroad.

Book Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive

Download or read book Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive written by J. Parker Lamb and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important contribution to railroad technological history. The book’s strength is the author’s mastery of the mechanical details.” —Mark Reutter, editor, Railroad History The diesel locomotive sent shock waves through rigid corporate cultures and staid government regulators. For some, the new technology promised to be a source of enormous profits; for others, the railroad industry seemed a threat to their very livelihoods. Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive introduces the reader to the important technological advances that gave rise to diesel engines, examining not only their impact on locomotive design, but also their impact on the economic and social landscapes. J. Parker Lamb describes the development of these technologies, allowing the reader to fully understand how they were integrated and formed a commercially successful locomotive. Like its companion volume, Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive (IUP, 2003), this book emphasizes the role of the leading engineers whose innovations paved the way for critical breakthroughs. Rail fans will appreciate this authoritative work. “A host of books and articles have touched on various aspects of this ongoing story over the years, but none tell the story with the completeness and superb clarity found here.” —Michigan Railfan “Lamb provides the reader with detailed descriptions of every generation of diesel locomotive along with a generous supply of excellent photographs.” —Technology and Culture

Download or read book British Locomotive Design written by Graham Glover and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967, British Locomotive Design is a review of British locomotive practice during the century and a quarter of steam’s ascendency. The author shows how the Stephenson basic plan, while remaining essentially unchanged, was adapted over the years to meet the increasing demands made upon it in terms of haulage power and speed. The subject’s widespread appeal is derived largely from the enormous variety of practical examples furnished by the products of the former companies, the groups and nationalisation, and, in the description of these by one who has a lifelong predilection for the steam engine in all its manifestations, readers will find due recognition accorded to the machines which had won their favour and, with others, have exercised a fascination as unquestionable as it is difficult to account for in set terms. This book will be of interest to students of engineering, technology, design and history.
