Book J L Vives Declamationes Sullanae I

Download or read book J L Vives Declamationes Sullanae I written by Juan Luis Vives and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical, annotated, bilingual edition, with introduction, notes, and indices, of the first two of Vives' five dramatic speeches on the theme of the abdication of the late Roman Republican dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla. These speeches belong among Vives' experiments, in the years 1514-1523, with various imaginative genres, in which he was trying techniques of personal involvement of both himself and the reader in exploration of pressing issues, whether political, ethical, or esthetic. The fundamental theme is the danger of ruling by fear. Sulla's two friends, Fundanus and Fonteius, counsel respectively against and for Sulla's retirement when Rome is full of vengeful survivors of his savage proscriptions.

Book Juan Luis Vives Politics Rhetoric and Emotions

Download or read book Juan Luis Vives Politics Rhetoric and Emotions written by Kaarlo Havu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By looking at rhetoric and politics, this book offers a novel account of Juan Luis Vives’ intellectual oeuvre. It argues that Vives adjusted rhetorical theory to a monarchical context in which direct speech was not a possibility, demonstrated how Erasmian languages of ethical self-government and political peace were actualised rhetorically and critically in a princely environment, and finally, rethought the cognitive and emotional foundations of humanist rhetoric in his late and famous De anima et vita (1538). Ultimately, towards the end of his life, Vives epitomised a distinctively cognitive view of politics; he maintained that political concord was not a direct outcome of institutional or legal reform or of the spiritual transformation of the Christian world (an optimistic Erasmian interpretation) but that concord could only be upheld once the dynamics of emotions that motivated political action were understood and controlled through responsible rhetoric that respected decorum and civility.

Book Syntagmatia

Download or read book Syntagmatia written by Dirk Sacré and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume has been dedicated to two distinguished scholars of Neo-Latin Studies on the occasion of their retirement after a long and fruitful academic career, one at the Université catholique Louvain-la-Neuve, the other at the internationally renowned Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae of Leuven University. Both the rich variety of subjects dealt with and the international diversity of the scholars authoring contributions reflect the wide interests of the celebrated Neo-Latinists, their international position, and the actual status of the discipline itself. Ranging from the Trecento to the 21st century, and embracing Latin writings from Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, the New World, Spain, Scotland, Denmark and China, this volume is as rich and multifaceted as it is voluminous, for it not only offers studies on well-known figures such as Petrarch, Lorenzo Valla, Erasmus, Vives, Thomas More, Eobanus Hessus, Lipsius, Tycho Brahe, Jean de la Fontaine and Jacob Cats, but it also includes new contributions on Renaissance commentaries and editions of classical authors such as Homer, Seneca and Horace; on Neo-Latin novels, epistolography and Renaissance rhetoric; on Latin translations from the vernacular and invectives against Napoleon; on the teaching of Latin in the 19th century; and on the didactics of Neo-Latin nowadays.

Book J L Vives De Subventione Pauperum sive De Humanis Necessitatibus Libri II

Download or read book J L Vives De Subventione Pauperum sive De Humanis Necessitatibus Libri II written by Juan Luis Vives and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by the Spanish humanist and philosopher, Juan Luis Vives, is the first tract of its kind in the Western world to treat the problem of urban poverty and propose concrete suggestions for a policy of social legislation. The treatise, published in 1526, is dedicated to the civil authorities of Bruges and deals specifically with the problems of that city, but with potential universal application. Vives calls upon the wealthy to share their blessings with those less fortunate, emphasizing that possessions are not given to us for our own use only but to share them with our neighbour. The reader will often find Vives' reflections and solutions surprisingly modern. The book includes an edition of the Latin text and an English translation.
