Book Petrarch and St Augustine

Download or read book Petrarch and St Augustine written by Alexander Lee and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the high regard in which Francesco Petrarca (1304-74) held St. Augustine, scholars have been inclined to view Augustine’s impact on the content of Petrarch’s thought rather lightly. Wedded to the ancient classics, and prioritising literary imitation over intellectual coherence, Petrarch is commonly thought to have made inconsistent use of St. Augustine’s works. Adopting an entirely fresh approach, however, this book argues that Augustine’s early writings consistently provided Petrarch with the conceptual foundations of his approach to moral questions, and with a model for integrating classical precepts into a coherent Christian framework. As a result, this book offers a challenging re-interpretation of Petrarch’s humanism, and offers a provocative new interpretation of his role in the development of Italian humanism.

Book Grappling with the Multifaceted World of the DNA Damage Response

Download or read book Grappling with the Multifaceted World of the DNA Damage Response written by Antonio Porro and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DNA damage is a major threat to genomic integrity and cell survival. It can arise both spontaneously and in response to exogenous agents. DNA damage can attack most parts of the DNA structure, ranging from minor and major chemical modifications, to single-strand breaks (SSBs) and gaps, to full double-strand breaks (DSBs). If DNA injuries are mis-repaired or unrepaired, they may ultimately result in mutations or wider-scale genome aberrations that threaten cell homeostasis. Consequently, the cells elicit an elaborate signalling network, known as DNA damage response (DDR), to detect and repair these cytotoxic lesions. This Research Topic was aimed at comprehensive investigations of basic and novel mechanisms that underlie the DNA damage response in eukaryotes.

Book Mendelssohn in Performance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Siegwart Reichwald
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2008-09-25
  • ISBN : 0253002613
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Mendelssohn in Performance written by Siegwart Reichwald and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring many aspects of Felix Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersects with his work as composer, contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, fingerings, and instrument techniques. They present the conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composing through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. Contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to convey a deeper understanding of musical expression in 19th-century Germany. This study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music offers valuable perspectives on 19th-century performance practice issues.
