Book excerpt: In Immigration and Xenophobia, Rosana Barbosa discusses Portuguese migration to Rio de Janeiro from 1822 to 1850 as a significant aspect of the city's history. During the first half of the nineteenth century, many Portuguese fled the difficult economic and social conditions in Portugal for better economic opportunities in post-independence Brazil, which was experiencing a boom that was fuelled by such commodities as coffee. Its retail commercial sector attracted many immigrants from France, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and most especially from Portugal. The arrival of Portuguese migrants was facilitated by the fact that they were mostly well received by the Brazilian government and elite, who wanted to create a "white" nation, while still continuing to import thousands of Africans every year. Although they were well received by the government, the Portuguese sometimes faced hostility and aggression from the population at large for reasons arising from nationalism and competition for jobs. Despite the presence of this hostility, most Portuguese immigrants in Rio de Janeiro adapted well to their new environment. They married or developed relationships with local people, bought properties in Brazil, and most did not return to Portugal. Book jacket.

The book focuses on a diverse set of images that include a depiction of former slaves whipping their erstwhile overseer distributed by an African American publisher, a census graph published in the New York Times, and a cutout of a child's hand sent by a southern mother to her husband at the front. The essays in this collection reveal how wartime women and men created both written accounts and a visual register to make sense of this pivotal period. The collection proceeds chronologically, providing a nuanced history by highlighting the multiple meanings an assorted group of writers and readers discerned from the same set of circumstances. In so doing, this volume assembles contingent and fractured visions of the Civil War, but its differing perspectives also reveal a set of overlapping concerns. A number of essays focus in particular on African American engagements with visual culture. The collection also emphasizes the role that women played in making, disseminating, or interpreting wartime images. While every essay explores the relationship between image and word, several contributions focus on the ways in which Civil War images complicate an understanding of canonical writers such as Emerson, Melville, and Whitman.

Yet despite their importance as a measure of the era's cultural temper, these stories have remain largely unexamined in studies of Civil War literature. Where My Heart is Turning Ever is the first volume in a projected trilogy that seeks to recover the significance of this forgotten body of writing. Unearthing more than three hundred stories from sixteen magazines in the South and West as well as the culturally dominant Northeast, Kathleen Diffley examines the effort of popular writers and publications to contain the disruption caused by the war and its aftermath. That effort, she shows, proved especially precarious when writers took up matters of race, political section, and gender. In this volume, Diffley identifies three distinct genres among the stories she investigates: "Old Homestead," which embodies themes of domestic order, collapse, and restoration; "Romance," which represents tensions between the sexes as the result of difficulties imposed by the war and Reconstruction; and "Adventure," which subverts domestic ideals by uprooting characters and situating them outside the home. As she discusses these genres, Diffley relates their messages to the post-bellum congressional debates over constitutional amendments abolishing slavery, guaranteeing federal authority over state jurisdictions, and extending voting rights to black men. She hows how the rhetoric that emerged both in Congress and in popular magazines promoted a new concept of national citizenship, one that transformed ties to kin into ties to country. In addition to discussing the broad spectrum of stories that fall within the three genres she identifies, Diffley includes full text of representative stories by Mark Twain, John W. De Forest, and Rebecca Harding Davis. She then analyzes each story, linking its author's career with the wider cultural and formal patterns that the story reveals. The purpose of giving this basic understanding is to help make happy individuals and families at a time when so many people feel there is no purpose in life or ability to save this world from destroying itself. Jo Ann also explains the meaning of the "Blessing," which refers to the well-known group wedding ceremonies, a hallmark of the Unification Movement. She was matched by Reverend Moon to a Japanese groom, and they participated in the Blessing ceremony of 2,075 couples in Madison Square Garden, New York, in 1982. ______________________________________________________________________________ Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Jo Ann Crooks grew up in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Like so many children of that time, she grew up in an alcoholic home as her father (a World War II veteran) tried to deal with the horrors of war by drinking. She also grew up as a Catholic, and her early experiences of faith influenced her decision, as a young adult, to join the Unification Church (Unification Movement) and have helped her to continue in the church for over forty years. She considers herself a "regular" member of the church, not a leader of any kind and a "typical" American. She has two adult children and two cats and currently lives in Tempe, Arizona, a city near Phoenix.

Another great privilege was co-founding the Portuguese Bible Institute and watching again as graduates from the Bible institute took greatly needed leadership of churches around Portugal, as they had from the Baptist Theological Seminary of Leiria years before. Spending his last six years of overseas ministry in the Netherlands, Sam was again thrilled to be involved with the founding of a seminary, Tyndale Theological Seminary. Sam writes candidly of the heartbreak of losing both Arlie and his second wife Ruth but rejoices in Gods goodness and mercy as he continues to serve the Lord with his wife Betty in retirement.
