Book Tennyson s Poems

Download or read book Tennyson s Poems written by R. H. Winnick and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tennyson’s Poems: New Textual Parallels, R. H. Winnick identifies more than a thousand previously unknown instances in which Tennyson phrases of two or three to as many as several words are similar or identical to those occurring in prior works by other hands—discoveries aided by the proliferation of digitized texts and the related development of powerful search tools over the three decades since the most recent major edition of Tennyson’s poems was published. Each of these instances may be deemed an allusion (meant to be recognized as such and pointing, for definable purposes, to a particular antecedent text), an echo (conscious or not, deliberate or not, meant to be noticed or not, meaningful or not), or merely accidental. Unless accidental, Winnick writes, these new textual parallels significantly expand our knowledge both of Tennyson’s reading and of his thematic intentions and artistic technique. Coupled with the thousand-plus textual parallels previously reported by Christopher Ricks and other scholars, he says, they suggest that a fundamental and lifelong aspect of Tennyson’s art was his habit of echoing any work, ancient or modern, which had the potential to enhance the resonance or deepen the meaning of his poems. The new textual parallels Winnick has identified point most often to the King James Bible and to such canonical authors as Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Thomson, Cowper, Shelley, Byron, and Wordsworth. But they also point to many authors rarely if ever previously cited in Tennyson editions and studies, including Michael Drayton, Richard Blackmore, Isaac Watts, Erasmus Darwin, John Ogilvie, Anna Lætitia Barbauld, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, John Wilson, and—with surprising frequency—Felicia Hemans. Tennyson’s Poems: New Textual Parallels is thus a major new resource for Tennyson scholars and students, an indispensable adjunct to the 1987 edition of Tennyson’s complete poems edited by Christopher Ricks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson is a compilation of essays, speeches, and poetry which exemplify Emerson's transcendentalist beliefs and his unique literary style. Known for his philosophical musings on individualism, nature, and self-reliance, Emerson's writing captures the essence of 19th century American Romanticism. His essays, such as 'Self-Reliance' and 'Nature', provide profound insights into the human condition and encourage readers to seek truth and authenticity in their lives. The breadth of genres represented in this collection showcases Emerson's versatility as a writer and thinker, making it a valuable addition to any literary enthusiast's library. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a leading figure in the transcendentalist movement, was inspired by his own experiences, philosophical studies, and close relationship with nature to produce his groundbreaking works. Influenced by the likes of Plato, Goethe, and the Bhagavad Gita, Emerson's writings offer a fresh perspective on spirituality, morality, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. His emphasis on the importance of individual thought and intuition continues to resonate with readers today, making his Collected Works a timeless treasure of American literature. I highly recommend The Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson to those interested in delving into the depths of transcendentalist thought and exploring the complexities of human nature. Emerson's eloquent prose and profound ideas will challenge readers to reflect on their own beliefs and values, making this collection a thought-provoking and enriching reading experience.

What we conceal Is always more than what we dare confide. Think of the letters that we write our dead. —from “Unsaid” Dana Gioia has long been celebrated as a poet of sharp intelligence and brooding emotion with an ingenious command of his craft. 99 Poems: New & Selected gathers for the first time work from across his career, including many remarkable new poems. Book Keats

Download or read book Keats written by Lucasta Miller and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling new look into the short but intense, tragic life and remarkable work of John Keats, one of the greatest lyric poets of the English language, seen in a whole new light, not as the mythologized Victorian guileless nature-lover, but as the subversive, bawdy complex cynic whose life and poetry were lived and created on the edge. In this brief life, acclaimed biographer Lucasta Miller takes nine of Keats's best-known poems—"Endymion"; "On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer"; "Ode to a Nightingale"; "To Autumn"; "Bright Star" among them—and excavates how they came to be and what in Keats's life led to their creation. She writes of aspects of Keats's life that have been overlooked, and explores his imagination in the context of his world and experience, paying tribute to the unique quality of his mind. Miller, through Keats’s poetry, brilliantly resurrects and brings vividly to life, the man, the poet in all his complexity and spirit, living dangerously, disdaining respectability and cultural norms, and embracing subversive politics. Keats was a lower-middle-class outsider from a tragic and fractured family, whose extraordinary energy and love of language allowed him to pummel his way into the heart of English literature; a freethinker and a liberal at a time of repression, who delighted in the sensation of the moment. We see how Keats was regarded by his contemporaries (his writing was seen as smutty) and how the young poet’s large and boisterous life—a man of the metropolis, who took drugs, was sexually reckless and afflicted with syphilis—went straight up against the Victorian moral grain; and Miller makes clear why his writing—considered marginal and avant-garde in his own day—retains its astonishing originality, sensuousness and power two centuries on.

Book excerpt: 'Anupama Raju has mastered the right simile, the apt image, the terse line. Love, poetry, journeys, places, moods, relations: her poetry is inclusive and intimate; her verbal iconography, rich with resonances. She can be passionate without being sentimental, ironic without being cynical and economic without being soulless and dry.' - K.Satchidanandan 'Urgent and passionate, these poems circle age-old preoccupations of love and longing. This is perilous terrain where the danger of cliche lurks at every turn. However, without resorting to the easy distancing strategies of irony, the poet plunges into psychologically fraught zones of "poetry, perfidy and Pandora," ready to give voice to the vulnerability and confusion attendant on such an exploration. A quiet blend of authenticity and artistry sees her through, transforming familiar tropes of blood and longing, pain and death, into the "burnt letters" of warm, pulsating verse. Anupama Raju cuts close to the bone in this debut collection of poems.' - Arundhathi Subramaniam"
