Book This is Tomorrow

Download or read book This is Tomorrow written by Whitechapel Art Gallery and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Is Tomorrow was a seminal exhibition of art, architecture, music and graphic design that took place at London's Whitechapel Gallery in August 1956. At its core was a room given over to the Independent Group, the proto-Pop collective comprised of (at various stages) the theorists Reyner Banham and Lawrence Alloway, photographer Nigel Henderson and the artists Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull and John McHale. The Independent Group's room premiered works of Op art alongside film posters, collages, murals, films and a jukebox, and was Britain's introduction to the phenomenon later named Pop. The spiralbound catalogue for This Is Tomorrow was designed by Edward Wright and published by Lund Humphries; out of print since 1957, it has since become a much sought-after rarity and a classic of graphic design and postwar visual culture. This facsimile edition is published for the Whitechapel's 2010-11 reconstruction of the 1956 show.

Book Adventures of the Black Square

Download or read book Adventures of the Black Square written by Whitechapel Art Gallery and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring how the universal visual language of geometric abstraction was influenced by different societies, this volume also demonstrates how the movement's revolutionary aesthetic continues to impact culture around the globe. It traces a century of abstract art from 1915 to the present day, celebrating the accomplishments of both men and women and includes sculpture, film, photography and painting. Organised around four distinct themes - communication, architectonics, utopia and everyday life - the book presents a chronological survey from Russia to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central America, Africa, South America, and the US. Each of the 100 works is featured in double-page spreads with brief artist biographies. Essays by Tanya Barson, Briony Fer, Tom McDonough, and Joshua Jiang, contextualize the various geographic and aesthetic stages of the development of geometric abstraction.

Book Women s Images of Men

Download or read book Women s Images of Men written by Sarah Kent and published by Pandora Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises challenging essays and interviews with women of different generations who discuss their conflicts and goals as artists and who portray men as objects of sexual desire, as persecutors, poseurs, emotional dependants or friends. The book evolved out of the controversy aroused by an exhibition of the same name which opened at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and toured Britain. Many critics denounced the show for its scratching and biting savagery.

Book What Makes a Great Exhibition

Download or read book What Makes a Great Exhibition written by Paula Marincola and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2007-02-16 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For better or worse, museums are changing from forbidding bastions of rare art into audience-friendly institutions that often specialize in “blockbuster” exhibitions designed to draw crowds. But in the midst of this sea change, one largely unanswered question stands out: “What makes a great exhibition?” Some of the world’s leading curators and art historians try to answer this question here, as they examine the elements of a museum exhibition from every angle. What Makes a Great Exhibition? investigates the challenges facing American and European contemporary art in particular, exploring such issues as group exhibitions, video and craft, and the ways that architecture influences the nature of the exhibitions under its roof. The distinguished contributors address diverse topics, including Studio Museum in Harlem director Thelma Golden’s examination of ethnically-focused exhibitions; and Robert Storr, director of the 2007 Venice Biennale and formerly of the Museum of Modern Art, on the meaning of “exhibition and “exhibitionmaker.” A thought-provoking volume on the practice of curatorial work and the mission of modern museums, What Makes A Great Exhibition? will be indispensable reading for all art professionals and scholars working today.

Book Theatre of the Natural World

Download or read book Theatre of the Natural World written by Mark Dion and published by Whitechapel Gallery. This book was released on 2018 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accompanying his first major UK exhibition in a decade, this unique publication focuses on five works by the American conceptual artist Mark Dion. Since the late 1980s Dion (b. 1961, Massachusetts) has been delving into the tropes and research methods of scientists, explorers, museum curators and archaeologists. He has created a body of work that playfully presents art as scientific enquiry or field work, questioning how knowledge is gathered, classified and displayed. Five installations will be displayed at Whitechapel Gallery: a scholar's study invites us to unravel intricate drawings and models; the Bureau for the Centre of the Study for Surrealism and its Legacy displays the strange magic of obsolete things; the muddy banks of the Thames have also yielded their treasures for poetic display in a gigantic cabinet; while a Dickensian Curiosity Shop tempts us with the bizarre aura of American bric-a-brac. Each immersive environment is also a habitat, evoking the characters that observe, conserve or exploit the natural world. The catalogue features new short essays on each of the exhibited works, an interview between the artist and Iwona Blazwick and a reprint of a short story by National Book Award for Fiction winner Andrea Barrett.

  • Pages : 394 pages

Download or read book Faces in the Crowd written by Whitechapel Art Gallery and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Taking Edouard Manet as its starting point and moving through the work of major painters and sculptors such as Ensor, Boccioni, Duchamp, Kollwitz, Kirchner, Beckmann, Magritte, Picasso, Hopper, Warhol, Hamilton, Pistoletto, Richter, Acconci, Sherman, Schutte, Ofili and Kentridge, as well as photographers such as Atget, Brassai, Evans, Levitt, Arnold, Weegee, Giacomelli, Goldin and Keita, Faces in the Crowd traces a history of avant-garde figuration from the 1870s to today through the works of one hundred artists." "The great revolutions in twentieth century art tend to be associated with abstraction. Yet there is a parallel history, which is equally radical. Manet's vividly realist scenarios or Jeff Wall's cinematic tableaux offer a compelling pictorial illusion of the modern. By contrast, Edvard Munch or Francis Bacon present a tortured or exhilarated inner life. For Alexander Rodchenko, the figure can be an agent of social change, revolutionary transgressive or symbolic." "This catalogue accompanies the exhibition organised by the Whitechapel Gallery and the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Radical Figures Painting in the New Millennium

Download or read book Radical Figures Painting in the New Millennium written by Lydia Yee and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely publication, accompanying a brand new survey exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery, presents key works by some of the most exciting practitioners in current figurative painting.0After a long period dominated by abstraction and conceptual approaches, painting saw a revival of figuration in the 1990s by artists whose work updated portraiture and history painting but remained rooted in the conventions of realism. However a new generation, coming to prominence in the new millennium, are distinguished by a radically different approach to the figure, in which bodies are fragmented, morphed, merged and remade but never completely cohesive.0'Radical Figures' highlights the renewed interest in radical modes of figuration during the past two decades, and considers the vast range of imagery, subjects and stories that have informed this transition: from the re-evaluation of early pioneers such as James Ensor and Max Beckman, and postwar painters such as Maria Lassnig and Philip Guston; to raunchy comics; to the ubiquity of photography on social media.0Fully illustrated in colour, this innovative appraisal will explore the breadth and range of painterly techniques used, such as loose gestural brushwork suggesting polymorphous forms and gender fluid bodies, and thick impasto evoking flesh, matter and objecthood. Including newly commissioned texts on and by each artist, this sumptuous catalogue will showcase the best in figurative painting today.00Exhibition: Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (06.02.-10.05.2020).

Book As Radical as Reality Itself

Download or read book As Radical as Reality Itself written by Matthew Beaumont and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, by a number of established scholars and artists, proposes new directions for Marxist cultural theory and the criticism of modern visual culture. It addresses a diverse range of topics, including the state and revolution, Communist and post-Communist aesthetics, Situationist thought and the avant-garde, subjectivity and commodification, and the politics and problems of contemporary artistic practice. The contributions also consider several other pressing questions in the visual arts, from the practice of digital culture to appropriations of critical theory, from the relations of art and the spectacle to architecture in the age of global modernity. This book on Marxism and art is not offered in a spirit of nostalgia: on the contrary, it testifies to the continuing vitality and confidence of historical materialist thought in the field of cultural theory and practice in the 21st century.

Book U S International Exhibitions during the Cold War

Download or read book U S International Exhibitions during the Cold War written by Andrew James Wulf and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although cultural diplomacy has become an increasingly fashionable term embraced by academics, foreign-service personnel, and private sector commercial and cultural interests, the very practice of this idea remains conspicuously challenging to define. This book takes on this problem, advancing a new understanding of cultural diplomacy that results from a historical investigation of a single area of government and private sector partnership, and what became in the mid-twentieth century the most prominent manifestation of this alliance—the cultural exhibitions sent abroad to “tell America’s story” with the goal of “winning hearts and minds.” To illustrate this point, selected exhibitions and the intentions of the policymakers who proposed them are interrogated for the first time beside archival documentation, writings from the history of design, advertising, science, as well as art historical and museum studies theories that address various aspects of the history of collecting and display, all of which explore the reality of how these exhibitions were conceived and prepared for foreign audiences. Most importantly, personal interviews with the designers and government representatives responsible for the ultimate appearance of these events upturn preconceived notions of how these events came to be. Seventy-five photographs from the exhibits make this history come alive. Through this discussion these questions are answered: What was America showing of itself through these exhibitions? And, more urgently, what do these exhibitions tell us about U.S. interest in verisimilitude? This investigation spans the crucial years of American exhibitions abroad (1955-1975), beginning with the formation of an official system of exhibiting American commercial wares and political ideas at trade fairs, through official exchanges with the U.S.S.R., to pavilions at world's fairs, and finally to museum exhibitions that signaled a return to the display of founding American values. They are thus complex ideological symbols in which concepts of national identity, globalization, technology, consumerism, design, and image management both coincided and clashed. The investigation of these exhibitions enhances the understanding of a significant chapter of U.S. cultural diplomacy at the height of the Cold War and how America constantly reimagined itself.
