Book 14th International Conference on Hand Arm Vibration

Download or read book 14th International Conference on Hand Arm Vibration written by Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) and published by DGUV/IFA. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2019, the Institut für Arbeitsschutz der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung (IFA) was hosting the 14th International Conference on Hand-Arm-Vibration. The event is organised every four years under the auspices of international expert bodies at changing places. It is aimed at all stakeholders in the subject, whether experts from the occupational safety and health and research communities or management personnel in the areas of manufacture and design. Mechanized manual work is often associated with exposure to vibration that may impact adversely upon the health and well-being of the affected individuals. Besides impairments to comfort and performance, harm to the hand-arm system, possibly permanent, must be prevented as a matter of priority. In a world of work that is becoming more and more complex, combined exposures are also becoming increasingly relevant. What influence does hand-arm vibration have in conjunction with noise or whole-body vibration? What contribution can be made by medicine, diagnostics, epidemiology, measurement technology and prevention to the identification and containment of risks, and better still, to their elimination? What is the role of international regulatory activity in this context? The 14th International Conference on Hand-Arm Vibration aimed to address these and many other questions concerning hand-arm vibration, and to find answers relevant to the field.

Book Machine Learning Methods for Pain Investigation Using Physiological Signals

Download or read book Machine Learning Methods for Pain Investigation Using Physiological Signals written by Philip Johannes Gouverneur and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-06-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain assessment has remained largely unchanged for decades and is currently based on self-reporting. Although there are different versions, these self-reports all have significant drawbacks. For example, they are based solely on the individual’s assessment and are therefore influenced by personal experience and highly subjective, leading to uncertainty in ratings and difficulty in comparability. Thus, medicine could benefit from an automated, continuous and objective measure of pain. One solution is to use automated pain recognition in the form of machine learning. The aim is to train learning algorithms on sensory data so that they can later provide a pain rating. This thesis summarises several approaches to improve the current state of pain recognition systems based on physiological sensor data. First, a novel pain database is introduced that evaluates the use of subjective and objective pain labels in addition to wearable sensor data for the given task. Furthermore, different feature engineering and feature learning approaches are compared using a fair framework to identify the best methods. Finally, different techniques to increase the interpretability of the models are presented. The results show that classical hand-crafted features can compete with and outperform deep neural networks. Furthermore, the underlying features are easily retrieved from electrodermal activity for automated pain recognition, where pain is often associated with an increase in skin conductance.

Book Assistive Augmentation

Download or read book Assistive Augmentation written by Jochen Huber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses Assistive Augmentation, highlighting the design and development of assistive technologies, user interfaces, and interactions that seamlessly integrate with a user’s mind, body, and behavior, providing an enhanced perception. Our senses are the dominant channel we use to perceive the world around us. Whether they have impairments or not, people often find themselves at the limits of their sensorial capabilities. Some seek assistive or enhancing devices that enable them to carry out specific tasks or even transform them into a “superhuman” with capabilities well beyond the ordinary. The overarching topic of this book revolves around the design and development of technologies and interfaces that provide enhanced physical, sensorial and cognitive capabilities: “Assistive Augmentation”. The Assistive Augmentation community convened at an interdisciplinary workshop at the 2014 International Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in Toronto, Canada. The community is comprised of researchers and practitioners who work at the junction of human–computer interaction, assistive technology and human augmentation. This edited volume, which represents the first tangible outcome of the workshop, presents stimulating discussions on the challenges of Assistive Augmentation as examined through case studies. These studies focus on two main areas: (1) Augmented Sensors and Feedback Modalities, and (2) Design for Assistive Augmentation.
