Book Turgenev in English A Checklist of Works by and about Him

Download or read book Turgenev in English A Checklist of Works by and about Him written by David H. Stam and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turgenev in English: A Checklist of Works by and About Him is a translation of Turgenev's works by David H. Stam and Rissa Yachnin. Excerpt: "A hundred years ago, in 1855, the first translations from Turgenev's Sportsman's Sketches appeared in French and British periodicals, and since that time his works have continued to gain an ever-increasing acclaim in the Western world. Henry James, one of his fervent admirers, was not exaggerating when he wrote in 1874 that the Russian was "the first novelist of the day," and Howells confessed a few years later that he had formed for Turgenev "one of the most profound literary passions" of his life."

Book Turgenev s Letters

Download or read book Turgenev s Letters written by Ivan Turgenev and published by Athlone Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivan Turgenev, one of the greatest Russian writers, was the first to achieve real fame outside of his own country. He spent most of his adult life in Western Europe and started to write letters, not just to keep his friends informed of his progress, but 'in order to receive replies'. An entertaining and accomplished correspondent, he rarely objected to publication of his letters, which were written with that possibility in mind. This selection of full letters spans more than fifty years, from 1831 until just before Turgenev's death in September 1883. Turgenev enjoyed conversations by post, debating social and political questions, and issues in literature, art and music. Among his correspondents were major writers of the day (including Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant, Henry James, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky) as well as friends and relations. Many of the letters reveal his views on contemporary literary and social events in Russia and Europe; others, to his publishers, translators and to aspiring authors, give some of his criteria for a writer. These letters will not provide an answer to the Turgenev enigma, but they do show many sides of this fascinating and mercurial man. The letters are in chronological sections. A biographical framework is provided both by the introductions to these sections and to individual letters, and by the inclusion of letters covering the main events of his life. This selection is an important contribution both to our knowledge and understanding of nineteenth-century Russian and European history and literature. A.V. Knowles is Senior Lecturer in Russian at the University of Liverpool and is the editor of the Tolstoy volume in The Critical Heritage series.

Book The Jew and Other Stories

Download or read book The Jew and Other Stories written by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev and published by 1st World Library - Literary Society. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - In studying the Russian novel it is amusing to note the childish attitude of certain English men of letters to the novel in general, their depreciation of its influence and of the public's 'inordinate' love of fiction. Many men of letters to-day look on the novel as a mere story-book, as a series of light-coloured, amusing pictures for their 'idle hours, ' and on memoirs, biographies, histories, criticism, and poetry as the age's serious contribution to literature. Whereas the reverse is the case. The most serious and significant of all literary forms the modern world has evolved is the novel; and brought to its highest development, the novel shares with poetry to-day the honour of being the supreme instrument of the great artist's literary skill. To survey the field of the novel as a mere pleasure-garden marked out for the crowd's diversion - a field of recreation adorned here and there by the masterpieces of a few great men - argues in the modern critic either an academical attitude to literature and life, or a one-eyed obtuseness, or merely the usual insensitive taste. The drama in all but two countries has been willy-nilly abandoned by artists as a coarse playground for the great public's romps and frolics, but the novel can be preserved exactly so long as the critics understand that to exercise a delicate art is the one serious duty of the artistic life. It is no more an argument against the vital significance of the novel that tens of thousands of people - that everybody, in fact - should to-day essay that form of art, than it is an argument against poetry that for all the centuries droves and flocks of versifiers and scribblers and rhymesters have succeeded in making the name of poet a little foolish in worldly eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike his contemporaries, Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) has until recently received less than his fair share of attention from Western scholars. This comprehensive examination of Turgenev's fiction begins by outlining the writer's life and sketching his personality. It provides a brief survey of his poetry and plays as the prelude to the fiction and reviews some aspects of his literary criticism in their bearing upon it. The main body of the book is devoted to readings of the individual works - A Sportsman's Sketches, the novels and all the stories. Professor Seeley focuses principally on the complexity and subtlety of Turgenev's portrayal of the psychology of his characters - a hitherto neglected aspect of his art. His approach challenges traditional views still current in the critical literature of both the East and the West. The book has been designed to be accessible not only to Slavists, but also to scholars and students of other literatures.
