Download or read book Mechanics of Generalized Continua written by E. Kröner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5 The symposium was held in Freudenstadt from 28\h to 31 \ ofAugust st nd 1967 and in Stuttgart from 1 to 2 of September 1967. The proposal to hold this symposium originated with the German Society of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) late in 1964 and was examined by a committee of IUTAM especially appointed for this purpose. The basis of this examination was a report in which the present situation in the field and the possible aims of the symposium were surveyed. Briefly, the aims of the symposium were stated to be 1. the unification of the various approaches developed in recent years with the aim of penetrating into the microscopic world of matter by means of continuum theories; 2. the bridging of the gap between microscopic (or atomic) research on mechanics on one hand, and the phenomenological (or continuum mechanical) approach on the other hand; 3. the physical interpretation and the relation to actual material behaviour of the quantities and laws introduced into the new theories, together with applications; 4. the further development of the theories, where necessary, and the clarification of open questions; 5. a stocktaking of present achievements and the prognosis for future developments. The committee agreed unanimously that the topic of the symposium represented an important phase of current developments in continuum mechanics, from the purely theoretical point of view as well as in connection with possible applications to actual materials.

Book Generalized Continua and Dislocation Theory

Download or read book Generalized Continua and Dislocation Theory written by Carlo Sansour and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defects, dislocations and the general theory.- Approaches to generalized continua.- Generalized continuum modelling of crystal plasticity.- Introduction to discrete dislocation dynamics. The book contains four lectures on generalized continua and dislocation theory, reflecting the treatment of the subject at different scales. G. Maugin provides a continuum formulation of defects at the heart of which lies the notion of the material configuration and the material driving forces of in-homogeneities such as dislocations, disclinations, point defects, cracks, phase-transition fronts and shock waves. C. Sansour and S. Skatulla start with a compact treatment of linear transformation groups with subsequent excursion into the continuum theory of generalized continua. After a critical assessment a unified framework of the same is presented. The next contribution by S. Forest gives an account on generalized crystal plasticity. Finally, H. Zbib provides an account of dislocation dynamics and illustrates its fundamental importance at the smallest scale. In three contributions extensive computational results of many examples are presented.

Book Elastic Media with Microstructure II

Download or read book Elastic Media with Microstructure II written by I. A. Kunin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals and polycrystals, composites and polymers, grids and multibar systems can be considered as examples of media with microstructure. A characteristic feature of all such models is the existence of scale parameters which are con nected with microgeometry or long-range interacting forces. As a result the cor responding theory must essentially be a nonlocal one. This treatment provides a systematic investigation of the effects of micro structure, inner degrees of freedom and non locality in elastic media. The prop agation of linear and nonlinear waves in dispersive media, static, deterministic and stochastic problems, and the theory of local defects and dislocations are considered in detail. Especial attention is paid to approximate models and lim iting transitions to classical elasticity. The book forms the second part of a revised and updated edition of the author's monograph published under the same title in Russian in 1975. The first part (Vol. 26 of Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences) presents a self contained theory of one-dimensional models. The theory of three-dimensional models is considered in this volume. I would like to thank E. Kroner and A. Seeger for supporting the idea of an English edition of my original Russian book. I am also grateful to E. Borie, H. Lotsch and H. Zorski who read the manuscript and offered many sugges tions. Houston, Texas Isaak A. Kunin January, 1983 Contents 1. Introduction ...

Book Structural Modeling of Metamaterials

Download or read book Structural Modeling of Metamaterials written by Vladimir I. Erofeev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the theoretical foundations of the structural modeling method applied to metamaterials. This method takes into account the parameters of the crystal lattice, the size of the medium particles, as well as their shape and constants of force interactions between them. It provides mathematical models of metamaterials that offer insights into the qualitative influence of the local structure on the effective elastic moduli of the considered medium and into performing theoretical estimations of these quantities. This book is useful for researchers working in the fields of solid mechanics, physical acoustics, and condensed matter physics, as well as for graduate and postgraduate students studying mathematical modeling methods.

Book Mechanics of Generalized Continua

Download or read book Mechanics of Generalized Continua written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their 1909 publication Théorie des corps déformables, Eugène and François Cosserat made a historic contribution to materials science by establishing the fundamental principles of the mechanics of generalized continua. The chapters collected in this volume showcase the many areas of continuum mechanics that grew out of the foundational work of the Cosserat brothers. The included contributions provide a detailed survey of the most recent theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics and can serve as a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics and applied mathematics.

Book Cosserat Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Cosserat Continuum Mechanics written by Ioannis Vardoulakis (Deceased) and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores the theory of Cosserat continuum mechanics, and covers fundamental tools, general laws and major models, as well as applications to the mechanics of granular media. While classical continuum mechanics is based on the axiom that the stress tensor is symmetric, theories such as that expressed in the seminal work of the brothers Eugène and François Cosserat are characterized by a non-symmetric stress tensor. The use of von Mises motor mechanics is introduced, for the compact mathematical description of the mechanics and statics of Cosserat continua, as the Cosserat continuum is a manifold of oriented “rigid particles” with 3 dofs of displacement and 3 dofs of rotation, rather than a manifold of points with 3 dofs of displacement. Here, the analysis is restricted to infinitesimal particle displacements and rotations. This book is intended as a valuable supplement to standard Continuum Mechanics courses, and graduate students as well as researchers in mechanics and applied mathematics will benefit from its self-contained text, which is enriched by numerous examples and exercises.

Book Mechanics of Composite Materials

Download or read book Mechanics of Composite Materials written by F. W. Wendt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Composite Materials contains the proceedings of the Fifth Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 8-10, 1967. The papers explore the mechanics of composite materials for naval applications. The structural requirements of a system and the fundamental mechanical properties of composite materials, as well as the behavior of such materials under various environmental conditions, are discussed. This book is comprised of 40 chapters and begins with an analysis of missile and aircraft systems constraints and operational requirements, along with ship systems constraints and operational requirements, for composite materials. The following chapters focus on structural uses of composites, particularly in naval ships, aircraft, re-entry vehicles, and space vehicle structures; and the micromechanics, structural mechanics, and failure mechanics of composite materials. Problems in the design of joints and attachments are considered, along with the stability of pre-strained laminated media; environmental factors in the design of composite materials; and the effect of water on glass-reinforced plastics. This monograph will be a useful resource for scientists and engineers who are particularly concerned with the mechanics of composite materials.
