Book excerpt: A presentation of the fundamental constitution that preceded dynastic feudalism, with source materials pertaining to ninth-century France, and a consideration of the methods best suited for achieving significant insight, in particular in the reconstruction of aristocratic genealogical relationships. This study finds that the essential office of count invariably was inherited, ideally according to proximity and primogeniture, with the king and the aristocracy acting as a corporation to admit specific and well-understood variations to basic hereditary principles in a sophisticated juristic environment.

Book Splendor Reginae

Download or read book Splendor Reginae written by Laurent Jégou and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Using and Not Using the Past after the Carolingian Empire

Download or read book Using and Not Using the Past after the Carolingian Empire written by Sarah Greer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using and Not Using the Past after the Carolingian Empire offers a new take on European history from c.900 to c.1050, examining the ‘post-Carolingian’ period in its own right and presenting it as a time of creative experimentation with new forms of authority and legitimacy. In the late eighth century, the Frankish king Charlemagne put together a new empire. Less than a century later, that empire had collapsed. The story of Europe following the end of the Carolingian empire has often been presented as a tragedy: a time of turbulence and disintegration, out of which the new, recognisably medieval kingdoms of Europe emerged. This collection offers a different perspective. Taking a transnational approach, the authors contemplate the new social and political order that emerged in tenth- and eleventh-century Europe and examine how those shaping this new order saw themselves in relation to the past. Each chapter explores how the past was used creatively by actors in the regions of the former Carolingian Empire to search for political, legal and social legitimacy in a turbulent new political order. Advancing the debates on the uses of the past in the early Middle Ages and prompting reconsideration of the narratives that have traditionally dominated modern writing on this period, Using and Not Using the Past after the Carolingian Empire is ideal for students and scholars of tenth- and eleventh-century European history.

Book Agnes through the Looking Glass Parts I II III

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of dynamic categories of Greco-Roman personal names is presented primarily in reference to France. Part I introduces the Frankish system of Germanic names and illustrates composite derivation through the examples of Mauger and Mathilde in the Norman ducal family. Part II describes the various Greco-Roman sub-catgories that formed before the onset of dynamic categories, with particular attention to traditions in the high aristocracy. Part III is devoted to the rise of the “oblique” category of Greco-Roman names, the smaller of the two dynamic categories. The “oblique” category includes the male names Peter, Thomas and Nicholas, and a host of female names, including Agnes and Sibylle and attributives such as Yolande and Clementia.

Book Kingship and Politics in the Late Ninth Century

Download or read book Kingship and Politics in the Late Ninth Century written by Simon MacLean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major study of the collapse of the pan-European Carolingian empire and the reign of its last ruler, Charles III 'the Fat' (876–888). The later decades of the empire are conventionally seen as a dismal period of decline and fall, scarred by internal feuding, unfettered aristocratic ambition and Viking onslaught. This book offers an alternative interpretation, arguing that previous generations of historians misunderstood the nature and causes of the end of the empire, and neglected many of the relatively numerous sources for this period. Topics covered include the significance of aristocratic power; political structures; the possibilities and limits of kingship; developments in royal ideology; the struggle with the Vikings and the nature of regional political identities. In proposing these explanations for the empire's disintegration, the book has broader implications for our understanding of this formative period of European history more generally.

Book Three Bernards Sent South to Govern II

Download or read book Three Bernards Sent South to Govern II written by Donald C. Jackman and published by Editions Enlaplage. This book was released on 2015-02-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part Two presents the train of argument leading to the establishment of precise genealogical connections between the several Bernards. The reliable affiliation of Count Bernard (I) of Auvergne as brother of Count Isembard of Autun supports a cogent case for the existence of a fundamental law of hereditary succession in French counties of the ninth century. Further material pertaining directly to comital succession in the context of the Bernards then follows.

Download or read book Conrad II 990 1039 written by Herwig Wolfram and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this biography of the German emperor Conrad II (990&–1039), internationally renowned medievalist Herwig Wolfram paints a fascinating portrait of a consummate politician set against the background of a Europe entering a new millennium. Conrad was the founder of the Salian Dynasty, under whose almost century-long dominion Germany became the most powerful state in Western Europe. He was also the first emperor of the high Middle Ages to rule the three kingdoms of Germany, Italy, and Burgundy. Conrad&’s reign marked the triumph of the concept of &“kingdom&” and the zenith of what has been termed &“imperial grandeur.&” He broadened the internal bases of imperial power and brought the full weight of his office to bear upon popes, clerics, and abbots in the pursuit of his ecclesiastical policies. His astounding ability to achieve his political goals was practically unparalleled among the emperors of the High Middle Ages. Wolfram sees Conrad as a politician in almost the modern sense of the word, capable of exploiting the political, social, and economic structures of his day in order to exert his authority and marginalize his opponents. The result is an intimate portrait filled with fresh insights about Conrad and his consort, Gisela, who&—as Wolfram demonstrates&—played an influential advisory role with her husband. First published in 2000, this work demonstrates Wolfram&’s masterly command of the sources and the storyteller&’s craft, making Conrad II a compelling history of an emperor and his magnificent epoch.
