Instant attraction turns to disaster-in-the-making when Maddy learns the identity of her superman: Kerr McKinnon. Book excerpt: The best of contemporary Argentine author Cecilia Pavón's short stories. Poet, writer and translator Cecilia Pavón emerged in the late 1990s as one of the most prolific and central figures of the young Argentine literary scene--the so-called "Generation of the 90s": artists and writers whose aesthetics and politics were an earnest response to the disastrous impact of American-exported neoliberal policies and the resulting economic crisis of 2001. Their publications were fragile--xeroxed, painted on cardboard--but their cultural impact, indelible. A cofounder of Buenos Aires's independent art space and publishing press Belleza y Felicidad--where a whole generation of soon-to-be-famous Argentine artists showed for the first time--Pavón pioneered the use of "unpoetic" and intimate content, her verses often lifted from text messages or chatrooms, her tone often impish, yet brutally sincere. Fellow Argentine poet Marina Yuszczuk once wrote, "Pavón's writing is filled with minor illuminations and conjectures; her syntax is the syntax of commas, 'buts,' and disjunctives, thoughts and impressions organized into a current that flows, branches off, and stands still." In 2015, Pavón's first volume of collected poems, A Hotel With My Name, was published in English. Contemporary writers in the US, Australasia and Europe discovered a deep affinity with her work. Pavón's protagonists, Ariana Reines noted, "are absolute women, guileless dreamers, saints in sneakers, on sidewalks, in jail, in Zara, on buses, in nightclubs, in bed." Translated by Pavón's own poetic protégé Jacob Steinberg, Little Joy collects the best of Pavón's short stories written between 1999-2020, originally published in three volumes in Spanish.

In The Assize of the Dying, a defendant in an English courtroom is sentenced to death for a terrible slaying he insists he did not commit. Rising to his feet, Louis Stevenson places a medieval curse on the prosecutor, the judge, the jury foreman, and the actual killer—the four men responsible for his fate. Profoundly shaken by the condemned prisoner’s words, a young couple looking on believes Stevenson’s declaration of innocence. And their determination to uncover the truth only intensifies when two more deaths follow in quick succession. In Aunt Helen, the seemingly civilized residents of a stately English country house keep secrets about love, marriage, adulthood, and desire hidden behind closed doors—until the “perfect murder” threatens to expose them. Two chilling tales of murder and revenge in one volume from the Edgar, Agatha, and Gold Dagger Award–winning author of the Brother Cadfael historical mysteries, who “writes with undiminished skill” (The Times, London).

On Aaron's Sunday visits, Estelle, aged nine, guides five-year-old Floss across the no-man's-land between their warring parents. A devoted but impractical mother, Lila faces obstacles with courage, optimism, and a gift for sugar-coating reality. A job on the WPA Art Project brings her dream within reach. Alienated by Aaron's vindictive behavior, the girls make friends with Bill Dobbs. His departure for Spain with the Lincoln Brigade leaves them and Lila bereft. Julio Delgado, a constant visitor-and like Lila, a newly-unemployed mural artist-seduces her with talk of a life in art while warring with Floss and Estelle. Made desperate by many personal losses and fearful of the future, Lila makes an impulsive decision that has devastating consequences for both her and her daughters. Estelle's college sweetheart, Barry Gabriel, has gone off to war. She must be both mother and father to Floss as they struggle to survive. Years later, their story comes full circle.

Book excerpt: With The Sportswriter, in 1985, Richard Ford began a cycle of novels that ten years later – after Independence Day won both the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award – was hailed by The Times of London as “an extraordinary epic [that] is nothing less than the story of the twentieth century itself.” Frank Bascombe’s story resumes, in the fall of 2000, with the presidential election still hanging in the balance and Thanksgiving looming before him with all the perils of a post-nuclear family get-together. He’s now plying his trade as a realtor on the Jersey shore and contending with health, marital and familial issues that have his full attention: “all the ways that life seems like life at age fifty-five strewn around me like poppies.” Richard Ford’s first novel in over a decade: the funniest, most engaging (and explosive) book he’s written, and a major literary event.
