Book Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy

Download or read book Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy written by Augustine Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of medieval preaching have tended to focus on sermon texts. This is the first scholarly study in English of preaching and its social context in thirteenth-century Italy. Augustine Thompson O.P., both an academic and a preacher, reconstructs the "Great Devotion" of 1233 and analyzes its devotional, social, political, and legal elements. He shows how the preachers of this revival crafted an image of divine authority that supported their intervention in factional disputes and facilitated their arbitration in social and political conflicts. They exploited forms from revived Roman Law and developing city statutes in order to create flexible procedures for mediation, and ultimately were able to revise communal ordinances to enshrine their message of social harmony. This is a work of original scholarship, carefully researched and lucidly written, which is a valuable contribution to our understanding of religion and politics in the middle ages.

Download or read book Italy in the Thirteenth Century Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry Dwight Sedgwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy in the Thirteenth Century, Vol. 1 The thirteenth century has always held its head high among its fellows. Ernest Renan calls it lo plus grand siécle du moyen age, and John Fiske the glorious century. Its predecessors, the eleventh and twelfth, have their devotees and rightly, for one is the morning twilight, the other the dawn, of our modern civilization but in the thirteenth the sun is high in heaven, Europe resounds with happy anima tion, the day's work has begun. Each country con tributes to the riches of the century: England brings Magna Charta, the beginnings of Parliament, Bishop Grosseteste, Roger Bacon, and Simon of Montfort France, the cathedrals of Paris, Rheims, and Amiens, her university, her literature, her gentlemen advent urers, and St. Louis; the Iberian Peninsula adds the culture of Moor and Jew at Cordova and Seville, Alphonso the Wise of Castile, James of Aragon the Conqueror, and St. Dominic; Germany, her victories over the heathen of the East, the Hanseatic towns, Walther von der Vogelweide, Albertus Magnus, Ru dolph of Habsburg. But Italy shows more energy, more productive power, more many-sided genius than any of them, no other country can produce a list of men to match Innocent III, Frederick II, St. Fran cis, Ezzelino da Romano, Thomas Aquinas, Niccola Pisano, Giotto, and Dante, nor matters of such world-wide concern as the Papacy, the Holy Roman. Download or read book Rome Before Avignon written by Robert Brentano and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 1974 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Brentano evokes papal Rome in all its paradox and complicated brilliance. From a detailed re-creation of the physical "town" with its series of brick "campanili" and green and purple mosaic floors, to the intrigues of the great families, like the Orsini and Colonna, the reader is guided through complex and fascinating culture. Brentano's skill lies in his ability to combine the story of the vaulting ambition of the great families, only mildly tempered by their very real religious piety, with a vivid reconstruction of everyday life in postclassical Rome.
