Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Painting in Italy, Vol. 2 of 6: Umbria, Florence and Siena; From the Second to the Sixteenth Century; Giotto and the Giottesques In the Lower Church, of which the aisle had been painted in the early part of the thirteenth century, Cimabue probably adorned the right transept.2 Surrounded by the works Of Giotto, on the right hand of that part of the building, is one Of an earlier date represent ing a colossal Virgin and Child between four angels.3 Placed above the altar of the Conception, and much damaged by restoring, it reveals the manner of Cimabue. Its position among the frescoes Of Giotto points to an earlier period of production, and allows us to suppose that Giotto was reverent of the work Of his master4 as Raphael afterwards was reverent of the work of Perugino, and that he spared it as a memento on that account. For the same reason we may also believe there still remains near the same spot a large figure Of St. Francis, also by Cimabue. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Famous Places and Peoples, Vol. 1 of 2: Florence Italy in the thirteenth century carried on and brought to its crowning point the work of civilization which France in the twelfth century had started by means of the crusades, the establishment of communal franchises, and the foundation of the University of Paris. The symbol created by the genius of Lucre tius, where the successive labor of generations is rep resented by running-men passing their torches from hand to hand, had never been realized with so much grandeur; the sacred torches had fallen from French hands, and had been picked up by Italy, in whose grasp they emitted a light which dazzled the whole world. Rome, notwithstanding the Barbarian invasion, the schism, and the exile of the Papacy, still retained the recollection of her glorious past, brought even more vividly before her by the superb monuments which had withstood the ravages of time and of man. But even Rome, like the rest of Italy, acknowledged the superiority of Florence comparable to Athens itself. Book The Italians Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Italians Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Frances Minto Dickinson Elliot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italians, Vol. 2 of 2 The road from Lucca to Corellia lies at the foot of lofty mountains, overmantled by chestnut forests, and cleft asunder by the river Serchio - the broad wilful Serchio, sprung from the flanks of virgin fastnesses. In its course a thousand valleys open up, scoring the banks. Each valley has its tributary stream, down which, even in the dog-days, cool breezes rustle. The lower hills lying warm towards the south, and the broad grassy lands by the river, are trellised with vines. Some fling their branches in wild festoons on mulberry or aspen-trees. Some trained in long arbours are held up by pillars of unbarked wood; others trail upon the earth in delicious luxuriance. The white and purple grapes peep from the already shrivelled leaves, or hang in rich masses on the brown earth. It is the vintage. The peasants, busy as bees, swarm on the hill-sides; the women pluck the fruit; the men bear it away in wooden measures. A new era was opened in Castile. The temper of the king, unlike that of his great predecessor, was literary rather than scientific, pedantic rather than scholarly, formal rather than substantial, graceful rather than profound. The new influence came rather from Italy than from Andalusia. Aragon, the refuge and the home of the Provencal troubadours in the thirteenth century, had stretched out her hands in the fourteenth century to Sicily, and in the fifteenth century to Naples 2 and long before the time of Ferdinand the Catholic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Guy De Lusignan a Tale of Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 The following story is founded on facts related in the annals of Southern Italy, during that part of the thirteenth century when Charles of Anjou was invested with the sovereignty of Naples and Sicily, when Louis the 9th reigned in France, and Henry the 3rd in England. Our road made a wide loop and came back far above their heads. They looked up, laughing, at us, just as they looked and laughed at burne-j ones when he caught the impression that remains for our joy in his Golden Stair. That drive was a spiral of delights; every turn Of that corkscrew road gave us a finer and wider View of the sea and sky that the poets have sung from Theocritus to Verlaine almost prepared us for the draught of beauty awaiting us in the garden of Paradise. Book excerpt: Books VI-X of Livy's monumental work trace Rome's fortunes from its near collapse after defeat by the Gauls in 386 bc to its emergence, in a matter of decades, as the premier power in Italy, having conquered the city-state of Samnium in 293 bc. In this fascinating history, events are described not simply in terms of partisan politics, but through colourful portraits that bring the strengths, weaknesses and motives of leading figures such as the noble statesman Camillus and the corrupt Manlius vividly to life. While Rome's greatest chronicler intended his history to be a memorial to former glory, he also had more didactic aims - hoping that readers of his account could learn from the past ills and virtues of the city.
