Book excerpt: In the three decades after Confederation, an aggressive Anglo-Saxon nationalism struggled to imprint its cultural model on the emerging Canadian state. It was countered by a defensive French-Canadian nationalism chiefly articulated by a majority within the Roman Catholic clergy. In this study Roberto Perin explores the role of the Vatican in this struggle, and in the political, religious, and cultural life of Canada during this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iacovetta examines the changes many had to face during the transition from peasant worker in an under-developed, rural economy to wage-earner in an urban, industrial society. Their experiences in Canada, she reveals, were shaped by class, gender, and ethnicity as well as familial responsibilities, government policies, and racism. In addition to conducting numerous interviews, Iacovetta has drawn on recent scholarship in immigration, family, labour studies, oral history, and women's history. Although both women and men struggled and were exploited, Iacovetta shows that they found innovative ways to recreate cherished rituals and customs from their homeland and managed to derive a sense of dignity and honour from the labours they performed.

Book excerpt: Like an armor-toothed belt across Italy’s upper thigh, the Gothic Line was the most fortified and fiercely defended position the German army had yet thrown in the path of the Allied forces. On August 25, 1944, it fell to I Canadian Corps to spearhead the famed Eighth Army’s major offensive, intended to rip through it. The 1st Infantry and 5th Armored Divisions advanced into a killing ground covered by thousands of machine-gun, antitank gun positions, and pillboxes expertly sited behind minefields and dense thickets of barbed wire. Never had the Germans in Italy brought so much artillery to bear or deployed such a great number of tanks. For 28 days, the battle raged as the Allied troops slugged an ever deeper hole into the German defences. The Metauro River, the Foglia River, Point 204, Tomba Di Pesaro, Coriano Ridge, San Martino, and San Fortunato became place names seared into the memories of those who fought there. They fought in a dust-choked land under a searing sun which by battle's end was reduced to a guagmire by rain. But they prevailed and on September 22 won the ground overlooking the Po River Valley, opening the way for the next phase of the Allied advance.

Book Canadians and the Italian Campaign 1943 1945

Download or read book Canadians and the Italian Campaign 1943 1945 written by Bill McAndrew and published by Art global. This book was released on 1996 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using first person accounts the author paints a compelling portrait of the nearly 93,000 Canadians who served in this campaign, more than a quarter of whom became casualties. These men and women faced inhospitable terrain, disease and a skilled enemy in a theater, which was largely overshadowed by D-Day. The battles fought by Canadian units fill their regimental colors with battle honors serving in this almost forgotten campaign that they derisively labeled "The Spaghetti League." With their bravery and perseverance, these D-Day Dodgers accomplished all that was asked of them, and wrote an honorable page in Canada's military history.
