Book excerpt: Monte Cassino is the true story of one of the bitterest and bloodiest of the Allied struggles against the Nazi army. Long neglected by historians, the horrific conflict saw over 350,000 casualties, while the worst winter in Italian memory and official incompetence and backbiting only worsened the carnage and turmoil. Combining groundbreaking research in military archives with interviews with four hundred survivors from both sides, as well as soldier diaries and letters, Monte Cassino is both profoundly evocative and historically definitive. Clearly and precisely, Matthew Parker brilliantly reconstructs Europe’s largest land battle–which saw the destruction of the ancient monastery of Monte Cassino–and dramatically conveys the heroism and misery of the human face of war.

Book Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth The First International in a Global Perspective

Download or read book Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth The First International in a Global Perspective written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism. In our age of globalised capitalism, large labour migration, and rising nationalisms, much can be learnt from the history of the first international labour organisation. Book Saving Italy The Race to Rescue a Nation s Treasures from the Nazis

Download or read book Saving Italy The Race to Rescue a Nation s Treasures from the Nazis written by Robert M. Edsel and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Monuments Men: "An astonishing account of a little-known American effort to save Italy's…art during World War II." —Tom Brokaw When Hitler’s armies occupied Italy in 1943, they also seized control of mankind’s greatest cultural treasures. As they had done throughout Europe, the Nazis could now plunder the masterpieces of the Renaissance, the treasures of the Vatican, and the antiquities of the Roman Empire. On the eve of the Allied invasion, General Dwight Eisenhower empowered a new kind of soldier to protect these historic riches. In May 1944 two unlikely American heroes—artist Deane Keller and scholar Fred Hartt—embarked from Naples on the treasure hunt of a lifetime, tracking billions of dollars of missing art, including works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Titian, Caravaggio, and Botticelli. With the German army retreating up the Italian peninsula, orders came from the highest levels of the Nazi government to transport truckloads of art north across the border into the Reich. Standing in the way was General Karl Wolff, a top-level Nazi officer. As German forces blew up the magnificent bridges of Florence, General Wolff commandeered the great collections of the Uffizi Gallery and Pitti Palace, later risking his life to negotiate a secret Nazi surrender with American spymaster Allen Dulles. Brilliantly researched and vividly written, the New York Times bestselling Saving Italy brings readers from Milan and the near destruction of The Last Supper to the inner sanctum of the Vatican and behind closed doors with the preeminent Allied and Axis leaders: Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Churchill; Hitler, Göring, and Himmler. An unforgettable story of epic thievery and political intrigue, Saving Italy is a testament to heroism on behalf of art, culture, and history.

Book The Italian Economy

Download or read book The Italian Economy written by Vera Zamagni and published by World Economies. This book was released on 2018 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacies of two great civilizations--the Roman Empire and Renaissance city-states--are still apparent in today's Italian economy in its internationalization, strong regional cultures, tourism, and arts industries. Less appreciated is the country's status as continental Europe's second-largest industrial power, notwithstanding the disproportionate significance of SMEs in Italy. Vera Zamagni's survey of the Italian economy and its modern history outlines its unique shape and structure and how human factors explain its strengths in social networks, "niche capitalism," and well-being indicators, as well as its weaknesses reflected in regional imbalances, political instability, and recently in banking. Focusing on economic developments since 1945, Zamagni explains how the contemporary economy is the result of the contours of this longer history, of the country's geography--low on natural resources but blessed with good weather and shipping opportunities--and more recent factors such as the country's membership in the EU and the changing profile of Italian demography and the country's surprisingly measured response to the challenges of migration. Drawing upon both conventional and heterodox approaches, the book concludes with an assessment of the prospects for the Italian economy. The book provides a concise overview of value for students in politics, political economy, history, and economics and for professionals looking to understand the nature of recent Italian economic performance.

Book European Military Crisis Management

Download or read book European Military Crisis Management written by Bastian Giegerich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International demand for military crisis-management missions continues to grow and demand for troops continues to outstrip supply. Like other Western democracies, European Union member states, because of their wealth, relative military competence and commitment to human rights, bear a particular responsibility to expand the international communitys capacity for action. But while the EU has succeeded in defining a complex military-technical and political-strategic framework to boost its role and that of its member states in crisis management, its performance so far has fallen well short of its ambitions. This paper analyses what the EU wants to be able to do militarily its level of ambition and contrasts this aspiration with the current reality. To explain the gap between the two, the paper examines national ambitions and performance across the EU and analyses their domestic determinants using the examples of Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom. The paper concludes by suggesting that the EU might need to strike a new balance between the inclusiveness and the effectiveness of its activities in this area if it wants to increase its military crisis-management performance and live up to its declared ambitions.
