Book excerpt: In the later fifteenth century, the Kingdom of Hungary became the first land outside Italy to embrace the Renaissance, thanks to its king, Matthias Corvinus, and his humanist advisors, Janos Vitez and Janus Pannonius. Matthias created one of the most famous libraries in the Western World, the Bibliotheca Corviniana, rivaled in importance only by the Vatican. The court became home to many Italian humanists, and through his friendship with Lorenzo the Magnificent, Matthias obtained the services of such great Florentine artists as Andrea del Verrocchio, Benedetto da Maiano, and Filippino Lippi. After Matthias's death in 1490, interest in Renaissance art was continued by his widowed Neapolitan queen, Beatrice of Aragon, and by his successors Vladislav I and Louis II Jagiello. The twenty-two essays collected in this volume provide a window onto recent research on the development of humanism and art in the Hungary of Matthias Corvinus and his successors. Richly illustrated with new photography, this book eloquently documents and explores the unique role played by the Hungarian court in the cultural history of Renaissance Europe.

Book excerpt: This vintage book contains a fascinating study of wine in Hungary and Italy, with information on its history and origins, influence, manufacture, exportation, and many other related aspects. An interesting and informative exploration of Hungarian and Italian wine culture, “The History of Wines in Hungary and Italy” would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: “Hungarian and Italian Wines”, “Ancient Hungary”, “Tokay Wine”, “One Hundred Different Brands of Exported Wines”, “Attention to Cleanliness”, “Two Unreported Brands”, “Tokay Grapes”, “A Wide Variety in Quality and Taste”, “Hungarian Vino-Growing”, “A Billy-Goat Flavor”, etc. Many vintage books like this are becoming increasingly hard-to-come-by and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, high-quality addition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on winemaking.

Book Elite Women As Diplomatic Agents in Early Modern Italy and Hungary

Download or read book Elite Women As Diplomatic Agents in Early Modern Italy and Hungary written by Jessica O'Leary and published by ARC Humanities Press. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the diplomatic role of women in early modern European dynastic networks through the study of Aragonese marriage alliances in late fifteenth-century Italy and Hungary. It challenges the frequent erasure of dynastic wives from diplomatic and political narratives to show how elite women were diplomatically active agents for two dynasties. Chapters analyze the lives of Eleonora (1450-1493) and Beatrice d'Aragona (1457-1508), daughters of King Ferrante of Naples (1423-1494), and how they negotiated their natal and marital relationships to achieve diplomatic outcomes. While Ferrante expected his daughters to follow paternal imperatives and to remain engaged in collective dynastic strategy, the extent of his kinswomen's continued participation in familial projects was dependent on the nature of their marital relationships. The book traces the access to these relationships that enabled courtly women to re-enter the diplomatic space after marriage, not as objects, but as agents, with their own strategies, politics, and schemes.

Book Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria Hungary and Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria Hungary and Germany Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria-Hungary and Germany I Have Stated, I think, several times in this book why the history of Italy is very hard to write. I need not repeat my reasons here. It had been my intention to say to my large circle of readers (who seem almost my personal friends) that "Italy" would be the last volume in this Nineteenth Century series. Very probably it may be so. Yet, when I consider how picturesque a subject Spain would be, with its war of the Constitution; its Carlist struggles; the sad history of the Spanish marriages, and their consequences; King Amadeo; Alfonso XII. and his sweet wife, Mercedes; and the Regency of Queen Christina; also how acceptable some intelligible account might be of the connection of Spain with Cuban affairs (if such an account in the next twelve months should be procurable), I am tempted to undertake it. It may seem to some that the chapters on Austria-Hungary and Germany have very slight connection with the story of Italy, yet I think it needs them. Without some brief account of contemporary events in those countries, my narrative would look to me like an unfinished seam left with a "ragged edge."
