(LOOK magazine commissioned me to do a photographic 'human' story about a widow immigrant returning to her birthplace.) The town, Lago, Calabria, in the province of Cosenza, is also my birthtown which I immigrated from at the age of 15." "In the approximately ten years of living in America, I graduated from high school, spent two years in the U.S. Army in Austria, married, and started college. My father died my first year of school and my mother came to live with my brother and me for about a year. Then she decided to go back home to Italy. I took a semester off and accompanied her back to Lago. I recorded the people and some events that occurred in the town during my month there. I know almost everyone in the photographs, as a matter of fact, they are my relatives, uncles, aunts, cousins, teachers, and my childhood friends. Everyone knew everyone else. In Lago, the population was about 4,000. Emigration has taken entire families from the town, even now Southern Italians leave in search of work."
