Book excerpt: Le Traité de Rome du 25 mars 1957 a marqué le début d’une entreprise de longue haleine qui doit aboutir à la construction d’une Communauté européenne unie mais aux contours encore en évolution. Mais bien avant ce Traité, de nombreux contacts étaient déjà établis entre les premiers Membres de la CEE, et tout particulièrement entre la France et l’Italie. Les échanges entre marchands lyonnais et banquiers italiens ont imprégné l’époque de la Renaissance et l’implantation en France des Italiens, qui remonte maintenant à un siècle, n’a fait que renforcer ces contacts de population qui sont des facteurs primordiaux de la construction européenne. Cette construction suppose en effet une connaissance réciproque, des échanges nombreux et variés entre les différents pays membres. C’est le but que s’est fixé l’Association Universitaire Européenne de Géographie Lyon-Europe qui organise de nombreuses conférences et des voyages d’étude dans les pays de la Communauté avec participation d’Universitaires européens. Dans le cadre de ces échanges, Edmond Galasso a participé à l’élaboration et à la direction de voyages d’étude en Italie qui ont permis d’établir d’enrichissants contacts entre l’Université Lyon III et les Universités de Turin Milan, Gênes, Bologne, Florence, Venise et Rome. « Italiens d’Hier et d’Aujourd’hui » constitue un lien supplémentaire entre les « deux sœurs latines » qui ont donné une impulsion décisive à la mise en place de la CEE.
