Book Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting

Download or read book Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting written by Edward B. Garrison and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four volumes of Edward Garrison's Studies, published between 1953 and 1962, represented a landmark in the study of medieval Italian painting. They made available for the first time photographs of all miniatures of the region and period concerned - principally the former Papal States and Tuscany in the twelfth century - which the author was able to track down, along with a generous selection of ornamental initials from almost every decorated manuscript he examined. The contemporary wall-paintings and panels from these regions are also illustrated and discussed. They represent one of the most valuable sources of information about twelfth-century painting in existence, and everyone interested in European art of that period has at some time found himself gratefully using them. A serious attempt has been made to get all this material into order, and the general lines of development have been set out. Together with the author's two volumes already published in our Selected Studies Series (Early Italian Painting: Selected Studies, Vols. I & II) these four volumes make available the complete corpus of Edward Garrison's work on medieval Italian painting. The two principal studies are concerned with 'Twelfth-Century Initial Styles of Central Italy' (serialized here in eleven sections) and 'Twelfth-Century Umbro-Roman painting' (serialized in six sections). Most of the non-serialized items are studies of individual manuscripts, but one should note the presence here of Supplements IV-VI to Garrison's Italian Romanesque Panel-painting: an index (Nos. I-III are available in Early Italian Painting: Selected Studies. Vol. I). The reprinting of these four volumes should be particularly welcome to art-historians, since they were originally issued in fascicule form, and many art-historical libraries lack copies.

  • ISBN : 0429963661
  • Pages : 420 pages

Download or read book Italian Renaissance Art written by Laurie Schneider Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chronology of the Italian Renaissance, its character, and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto, others to the generation of Masaccio, Brunelleschi, and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism, for example, is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right."

Book The Fifteenth Century Italian Paintings

Download or read book The Fifteenth Century Italian Paintings written by Dillian Gordon and published by National Gallery Publications Limited. This book was released on 2003 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, illustrated catalogue deals with artists the bulk of whose work falls within the first half of the fifteenth century, around 1400-1460, predominantly in Tuscany. Yet within this relatively narrow chronological and geographical confine we find some of the most influential and innovative painters of the Italian Renaissance, including Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Pisanello and Uccello. An essay by Susanna Avery-Quash traces the growth of interest in early Italian painting in Britain. Every picture has been re-examined with conservators, and new information gleaned about its technique and condition. All the paintings are reproduced full-page, in colour, together with many details, comparative illustrations and reconstructions.

Book Art and Architecture in Italy 1250 1400

Download or read book Art and Architecture in Italy 1250 1400 written by John White and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 14th century in Italian art is a very rich one, and Professor White's book gives architecture equal weight with painting and sculpture. The story of the Gothic style and the prehistory of the Renaissance is given: all the facts are related, but also the works of art are described with insight and for their own sakes, and not simply as data for fitting into schemes and theories. Among the great names are those of Arnolfo di Cambio, the Pisani, Cavallini, Cimabue, Duccio, Giotto, Simone Martini, and the Lorenzetti; among the buildings S. Croce, S. Maria Novella, the cathedral and the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, and the cathedrals of Siena, Orvieto, and Milan, as well as churches, castles, and civic buildings from the Val d'Aosta to Sicily. The third edition of this work includes colour illustrations and incorporates textual revisions and an updated bibliography.
