Book excerpt: Sunshine, warmth, lemon blossom . . . Springtime in glorious Southern Italy can go to your head. Especially if you are escaping an overbearing husband, the embarrassingly public loss of your company, an interfering mother who still tries to run your life or the pain of a husband's affair with a girl young enough to be his daughter. As the Italian sun ripens the lemons in the groves that tumble down the hillsides and the Mediterranean dazzles beneath them, assertive Angela, extrovert Sylvie, unconfident Claire and mousy Monica find burgeoning friendship and begin to blossom in quite unexpected ways. Packed with memorable characters – from the acid-tongued Grand Old Man of Modern Art who lives next door – to the aspiring gigolo who thinks nothing of a forty year age gap, Maeve Haran's An Italian Holiday is a witty and entertaining reminder of why going a little mad in the sun can sometimes be exactly what you need.

Book excerpt: Aunt Angela knelt by the boys' bedside and bowed her head into the comfort of the blankets. "Oh, good and holy Saint Nicholas," she intoned, "you who bring joy to children, and plenty of presents too. It's me again, Angela Cavallo. Look, I know you're busy tonight, but put in my heart the spirit of childhood about which the Gospel speaks. Teach me how to sow happiness around me. Teach Little Dick never ever to touch women again. Teach The Turd to be nice to others, and teach Baby Michael to stop stealing stuff. Even if you must punish each of them with horrible afflictions, that's okay, we'll understand. Amen." "Amen," the boys chimed in together, hoping that tonight, Christmas Eve, would not be the night they broke out with some weird infection. When this mafioso family reunites for a Christmas celebration, things get wacky quickly as headstrong Silvio Cavallo and his unforgettable gay twin brothers become involved in a hilarious hit job gone wrong. Italian Holiday is a comical caper of Italian bluster, dysfunctional family dynamics, and an outlandish tale complete with wine, weapons, and wisecracks. For at least one family, turmoil rather than the serenity of a Norman Rockwell painting may be the real Christmas tradition.

Book My Very Italian Holiday

Book excerpt: "After losing the love of her life in a tragic accident, thirty-year-old Gina is struggling. Running her little guesthouse in the hills of the Lake District keeps her going, but her heart isn't in it any more. When new guest, Fabio Garcia, arrives, Gina feels a spark that reminds her she's alive. He's tall, dark but with startling blue eyes, and makes her laugh, for the first time in... forever. Guilt holds her back, but friends, and a glass (or three) of wine, push her into his arms. It's nothing serious, which, Gina realises, is exactly what she needs, so when he invites her to his family's crumbling Italian villa, on the sparkling waters of Lake Como, she says yes. It's hard not to fall for the grand, sandstone Villa Lucia, its faded wallpaper, green shutters, and Fabio, serving fresh coffee in bed. But Gina knows where she belongs, and she's just not ready to explore the hidden depths she discovers in this handsome Italian. Just when Gina thinks she might change her mind, his sister reveals a secret that sends Gina packing. And it's a relief. Because she was right not to open her heart to Fabio, to walk away from him, the villa, the moonlit lake... Wasn't she?" -- Provided by publisher.

Book Raised Italian American

Download or read book Raised Italian American written by Joseph Bonocore and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raised Italian-American remembers the history, stories, traditions, and values of growing up in an Italian neighborhood. One of my fondest memories as a child was to take a ride and view the beautiful nativity scenes that were erected throughout the neighborhood each Christmas. The popularity of these large statues, they are called presepi in Italy, started in Italy in the 17th century when it was fashionable to find them in palaces and homes of wealthy citizens. The newfound enthusiasm of erecting a presepi during Christmas may be contributed to Saint Gaetano who openly encouraged people to create the presepi as a sign of devotion. It wasn't until the later part of the 19th century that these presepi became a part of family traditions in nearly every home in Italy. This set is a beautiful piece of art and is a prized possession of the families that own them. I know that Phyllis' grandmother cherished her presepi until the day she died and the family still think fondly of their grandmother every time they see it at Christmas time.
