Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Explorers in Africa The substance of these sketches appeared in the Leisure Hour in the years 1888 and 1890. At that time they were the first connected account of Italian Exploration in Africa which had appeared in this country. The suggestion was made in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society that they would serve a useful purpose if reprinted. With this object in view the author has carefully revised and in several cases considerably enlarged the original sketches. Resident in Rome, she has had special opportunities of access to the records of the Italian Geographical Society, and for consulting other reliable sources of information. It is hoped that the list of portraits, which is as complete as it could be made, will give additional value to the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Footsteps in East Africa, Vol. 1 of 2: Or an Exploration of Harar He disappeared into the desert for four months, but this unnoticed, unknown, journey has been of great importance to the Egyptians, to the English, and now to the Italian Army. The way was long and weary, adventurous and dangerous, but at last the Dreadful City was sighted, and relying on his good Star and audacity, he walked boldly in, sending his compliments to the Amir, and asking for audience. His diplomacy on this occasion, his capacity for passing as an Arab, and his sound Mohammedan Theology, gave him ten days in the City, where he slept every night in peril of his life. Book The Voice of Africa Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Voice of Africa Vol 1 of 2 written by Leo Frobenius and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voice of Africa, Vol. 1 of 2: Being an Account of the Travels of the German Inner African Exploration Expedition in the Years 1910-1912 The final chapter forms the conclusion in every sense, and, like every other scientific summary, opens up a vista upon greater problems unsolved as yet, and, therefore, ends upon a query. If the reader is clear in his mind about this arrangement of the subject matter, his selection of what will interest him most will present no difficulty. Some will find their pleasure in reading the account of the journeys made; others, in pursuing the descriptions of the method adopted in this investigation and its results. In my own humble opinion the introduction to the great problems involved in the previous history of Africa, which are set up in the recital of our experiences among the Savages of Africa, ought to interest all specialists in general, and in particular to be of unusual value to the colonial politician who would conduct the affairs of the countries through which we travelled either from his arm-chair at home in Europe or in the district itself. For the German Inner African Exploration Expedition, which, God grant, may still have a prolonged existence under whatever flag, and whose archives will continue to be uninterruptedly increased, has for its ideal task not only the establishment and exposition of the recorded and the prehistoric conditions of Africa, but'the creation of practical values and, above all, of a utilitarian standard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley's Adventures in the Wilds of Africa: A Full Account of the Two Famous Expeditions of Henry M. Stanley, the Fearless and Peerless Explorer of the Dark Continent For centuries Africa has been the dark continent of our globe. The sea-washed edges of this immense tract have been known time immemorial. Egypt, at its northeastern corner, is the Oldest of the governments of the earth; while the nations skirting the Red and the Mediterranean seas were actors in the earliest recorded history. But Africa as a whole has been an unknown land. That it was a fertile land, was demonstrated by the treasures brought from its depths by those mighty rivers, the Nile, the Niger and the Congo. That it was populous, was proven by the fact that its native tribes had furnished to the world with out, forty millions of slaves in the period of two centuries. Both the Slave-hunter and the slave told wondrous tales of the inner depths of the land, but these were mere hints as to the actual facts of the case. Africa remained a mystery and a riddle, that seemingly were never to be penetrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Wizard of Africa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wizard of Africa: Henry M. Stanley's Last Expedition Through the Dark Continent; The Rescue of Emin Pasha; Thrilling Story of the Great Explorer's Adventures Among the Wild Tribes of the Unknown Continent The natives had the utmost confidence in him, and for their better education, he established training schools all over the province. 'agri culture was developed, and murder, war and slavery became things of the past. Emin's idea of government was to civilize the negroes in as short a time as possible, by the exercise of methods of kindness and con sideration. To this end he appointed the most efficient men he could get as officers. Under his directions hospitals were built, roads were constructed through the country, and the natives were taught how to make wagons. Cotton, coffee, rice, indigo, and wheat were cultivated with success. In the meantime the country surrounding the territory of Emin Pasha remained in its original condition of barbarity, and in it the Arab slave traders carried on their infamous traffic unmolested. Book The Duke of the Abruzzi

Download or read book The Duke of the Abruzzi written by Mirella Tenderini and published by . This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Pioneer on K2 and namesake of the Abruzzi Ridge * Mountaineering classic now in Legends and Lore series * Complete biography of an important explorer Grandson of the first king of Italy, Luigi Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta, or the Duke of the Abruzzi, was one of the most celebrated explorers of the early twentieth century. This biography vividly recounts not only the details of his pioneering expeditions but also the intriguing story of his personal life----including a doomed love affair with an American heiress and his more successful friendship with Vittorio Sella. The Duke's lifelong passion for adventure began in the Italian Alps of his childhood. Having mastered the Zmutt Ridge of the Matterhorn at the age of 21, he vowed to devote himself to mountain exploration. Just three years later, in 1897, he completed the first successful ascent of Alaska's Mount St. Elias. His 1899 attempt to be the first to the North Pole fell short of its goal, but he succeeded in going farther north than any previous expedition. A naval career did not stop him from exploring the Ruwenzori range in Africa. The Duke's most noted achievement was undeniably his pioneering climb on K2 in 1909 on the route that bears his name: the Abruzzi Ridge. In part because of this achievement, we are thrilled to bring this classic, originally published in 1997, back into print as one of our Legends and Lore titles. This title is part of our LEGENDS AND LORE series. Click here > to learn more.
