It started as an assignment... Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. There were only ten letters, and fifty kids in his class. But he was the top student, so he got the first one. That letter was the beginning of a correspondence that spanned six years and changed two lives. In this compelling dual memoir, Caitlin and Martin recount how they became best friends—and better people—through their long-distance exchange. Their story will inspire you to look beyond your own life and wonder about the world at large and your place in it.

Download or read book Always with Us written by Theoharis, Liz and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jesus's words 'the poor you will always have with you' (Matthew 26:11) are regularly used to suggest that ending poverty is impossible. In this book Liz Theoharis critically examines both the biblical text and the lived reality of the poor to show how this passage is taken out of context and distorted. Poverty is not inevitable, Theoharis argues. It is a systemic sin, and all Christians have a responsibility to partner with the poor to end poverty once and for all"--Jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenville, South Carolina. Tessa and Dexter have a peculiar game that has bound them together since adolescence, ever since he moved with his peculiar family into the house across from hers. While she develops a genuine obsession with the new neighbor, Dex views their relationship as mere amusement. Their special and eccentric friendship drives them to play with their own lives and those of others, constantly making bets and deliberately getting into trouble. A crazier wager than before forces Tess's parents to send her away forever, to Florida, to live with Aunt Teddy. Tessa begins to despise Dexter for everything he put her through, and it is only through this hatred that she manages to move on after that terrible decision. Synopsis: Daytona Beach, Florida. Eight years later. Tess can't believe her sister is about to get married, which means she has to return home for an entire weekend. Will she see him again? Will they still play together? In a weaving of present and past, their wild story speaks to us about great love and how cruel the heart can be; about friendship and the devastating pains of life, which flow inexorably and cannot hold together what is meant to be lost or change what is written to remain united.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We promised each other that we would always be together no matter what, as we snuggled close to one another and kissed. He smelled so good that he was turning me on but that had to wait, I had to be satisfied with just his warm body next to mine. We both fell asleep wrapped in each others arms. I had a funny feeling and opened my eyes to see Bob sitting up in bed. What's the matter I asked? He said he just didn't feel right. Instant panic grew inside of me as I dialed 911. Bob screamed out my name as he held his arms out. I went into his arms, he hugged me and his whole body went limp. I couldn't feel a pulse and leaned on his chest to listen to his heartbeat but there was nothing. As the medics arrived I let them in and was told to stay in the living room. I don't know why but I felt that Bob's heart had beat it's final beat. I knew deep down in my heart that no matter how hard I could shake him, or how desperately I cried or yelled or even prayed he would never wake up again. He promised me we would always be together and now he is dead.

Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Download or read book There Will Always Be A Tree written by Jerry S. Beall and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times have changed. America has been rural for years, but now is largely urban. In spite of this shifting, it is still surprising to discover how many people relate to their "grandparents farm". "I remember the farm" is usually stated with a sound of fondness. It is from that background of memories that the author has written this book on values. You can't avoid embracing some system of values. Even if you declare, "I choose to reject all values", you choose a value of your own freedom to reject. It is unavoidable. From the Garden of Eden and a tree of choice, to the Hill of Golgotha and the Old Rugged Tree (Cross), to the complexities of today, the values you choose mark your path of life. I believe the values lived by our fathers and mothers, many of them learned from the farm and the church, passed down to following generations, made America strong and a wonderful place to live. I encourage you to read this book and to ask the Lord for wisdom to apply these enduring truths for practical living in our age. They will guide our paths and help make us strong again. Farmstrong.
Download or read book Timestamp written by Marcus Granderson and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story is probably not like yours. I’m a Black boy from the Midwest. I’ve never been kissed. I’m desperately in love with two women: Aretha and Whitney. I struggle with a mild form of social anxiety. I sing to myself almost everywhere I go. I’m an ex-chitlins (with hot sauce and ketchup) lover. I’ve been called an Oreo. I’ve been stopped by the police while walking home. I’m the descendant of slaves, and a Harvard graduate. Though our stories may not be the same, the universal themes explored in this poignant and personal literary collection—love, identity, hope, social justice, and coming of age—bond us together. Timestamp: Musings of an Introverted Black Boy is many things: It’s one Black boy’s journey through college and into adulthood. It’s a compilation of intimate musings, short and long. It’s an anthology of reflections linked to distinct moments in time. It’s a series of meditations on life, love, and the lack thereof. It’s not simply a “Black” book, or even a “millennial” one. It’s a human book. I wrote it for everyone—and that includes you.
Download or read book An Alaskan Adventure written by Alan R. Adaschik and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Adaschik's dream was to visit Alaska; America's last frontier and a place which abounds with wildlife and unspoiled wilderness. Upon retirement, Al and his wife Gayle sold everything and bought a thirty-seven foot Damon Intruder motor home to make his dream a reality. "An Alaskan Adventure" is a narrative about Al and Gayle's trip which highlights the places they visited and the wonderful things they experienced along the way. "An Alaskan Adventure" commences in Indiana following a visit with Al's relatives who live there. After negotiating the traffic jams of Chicago, Al and Gayle traveled I-94 across the northern Great Plains visiting Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana along the way. Heading north, they visited Glacier National Park and continued on to tour Yoho, Banff, and Jasper national parks in Canada. Afterwards, Al & Gayle picked up the Alaskan Highway which took them to a realization of Al's dream. The reminder of the book is about Al & Gayle's travels around the Great Alaskan Triangle, a circuit of 900 miles defined by the cities of Tok, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. While negotiating this triangle, Al and Gayle's primary goals were to find gold in one of the many streams they crossed and to also find a Wooly Mammoth frozen in a glacier. Toward this end, they took side trips to the White Mountains National Recreation Area, Denali National Park, The Top of the World Highway, and the towns of Homer and Chicken. "An Alaskan Adventure" is not just a book about touring Alaska. Al is an environmentalist and a theme evident throughout the book is that the beauty we find around us is fleeting and that if we, as a species, continue to over-populate our world, what we see and value so highly is sure to go away.

Download or read book Deconstruction Is in America written by Anselm Haverkamp and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What impact has deconstruction had on the way we read American culture? And how is American culture itself peculiarly deconstructive? To address these questions, this volume brings together some of the most provocative thinkers associated with deconstruction, among them Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, and Avital Ronnel. Ranging across a wide field, from the ethics of reading to the rhetoric of performance, the contributors offer provocative insights into a new sense of the political. The America of the volume's title turns out to be the place where the politics and poetics of responsibility meet. It is also the place where we confront the tension between difference and profound otherness.
