Sarah Britton's approach to plant-based cuisine is about satisfaction--foods that satiate on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Based on her knowledge of nutrition and her love of cooking, Sarah Britton crafts recipes made from organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds. She explains how a diet based on whole foods allows the body to regulate itself, eliminating the need to count calories. My New Roots draws on the enormous appeal of Sarah Britton's blog, which strikes the perfect balance between healthy and delicious food. She is a "whole food lover," a cook who makes simple accessible plant-based meals that are a pleasure to eat and a joy to make. This book takes its cues from the rhythms of the earth, showcasing 100 seasonal recipes. Sarah simmers thinly sliced celery root until it mimics pasta for Butternut Squash Lasagna, and whips up easy raw chocolate to make homemade chocolate-nut butter candy cups. Her recipes are not about sacrifice, deprivation, or labels--they are about enjoying delicious food that's also good for you.
Download or read book A Battlement of Spears written by Bernard Botes Kruger and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, one of the five most recognizable names in the world was arguably that of Paul Kr ger, president of the Transvaal Republic-a small Southern African country inhabited by a white tribe-who took on the overwhelming superiority of the mighty British Empire in defense of his people's sovereign independence. It was a David and Goliath story. As most of the world-including the US-cheered the Boers on, they fought a desperate war to the bitter end (1899-1902) against colonialism, until their country lay smoldering in ruins and an estimated 27, 929 Boer women and children, as well as an untold number of blacks, had died in British concentration camps. Yet within little more than half a century, those same Afrikaners had squandered their political capital and gone from being the world's favorite underdog to one of the most reviled names in history. Their subsequent social engineering project known as apartheid became an abhorrent concept in the eyes of the international community. Bernard Botes Kr ger is a fifth-generation descendant of the wartime president, Paul Kr ger. He is an Afrikaner who lived most of his life in the turmoil and conflict that has dominated his country's history. His new historical novel, A Battlement of Spears, tells the remarkable story of how not only the Afrikaners, but also the many other former sovereign nations within the redrawn borders of the postwar South Africa struggled to come to terms with a common identity, often with devastating consequences. "What cruel twist of tectonic irony caused the deepest scar on the earth's surface across the face of that continent that would also suffer the most appalling of human tragedies?" the author asks. Set against the backdrop of the timeless mountain called in Zulu uKhahlamba (Barrier of Spears), a dramatic geographic boundary that divided nations throughout history, A Battlement of Spears is an epic story spanning twenty-four years and two continents, of two young men with similar interests but vastly different cultural backgrounds who become unlikely friends. In a tragic series of events they will discover what sacrifices are exacted from those who would dwell in the symbolic no man's land of the summit, where fog often obscures the vision and deprivation dulls the senses, until it becomes all too easy to drift into hostile territory or stumble into the jaws of the precipice. In the process they will become separated, spending a lifetime before finding each other again a world away, on a different continent. But in the course of their respective journeys, they will also learn that barriers are not always what they seem, and that choices are sometimes inevitable, with far-reaching consequences. In that hauntingly beautiful land it is never merely about survival, but about the things that make it truly worthwhile, such as loyalty, friendship and honor, regardless of the price. Do not go into this story expecting to encounter the usual themes of race. To consider South Africa synonymous with racial hatred would be an oversimplification. This story is not about race. In fact, despite the elaborately drawn details highlighting many of the customs of traditional cultures-Portuguese, Zulus, KhoiSan, Afrikaners, rural and urban, conservative and revolutionary-the story is not even uniquely South African. It is not about apartheid, or about Blacks, or Whites. Rather, it is about the countless 'gray' people of many different cultures, ordinary individuals simply looking to survive, who become trapped in the consummation of historical inevitabilities that are neither of their doing, nor of their choosing. Written in a style that endeavors to entertain while enlightening the uninformed about South A
Download or read book Unleashing Raine written by Sierra Raine and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story about my life. Only the names were changed to protect the identity of my family. I am portrayed as Sierra. I was born in 1976 to a poverty-stricken family in the South. My father was an egotistical man who did not want a family, and my mother was a melodramatic woman who longed for a fairy tale. My parents divorced when I was four years old, and Mom moved on to a man named Gregory who she believed was the man of her dreamsthe polar opposite of my dad. That relationship began our life of hell, and thus my struggle began. Gregory turned out to be a monsternot only an alcoholic, but a paranoid schizophrenic. He beat Mom regularly for six years while I hid in the shadows. Our home life was unstable; we lived in campers, run-down shacks, and dilapidated trailers with no heat or electricity. Constant chaos ensued as we tried to desperately survive the horror story that was our lives. Gregory controlled us and treated us as his personal slaves, and Mom dutifully endured while I accumulated resentment within. I was a quiet, introverted child who internalized everything. Everyone thought I was dealing with the situation beautifully and therefore offered me no help or support. My faith in God pulled me through those times and made me into a stronger, better person. Despite growing up in poverty without loving parents or family and with the troubles I have had in relationships, I have done well for myself. God has blessed me beyond measure. I credit all my success to God and give him the glory.

Download or read book A Bow Elk Hunter Nightmare written by Clyde Schultz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story could very well have happened while hunting elk in Colorado. When I approached two men dressed in street clothes and oxfords. It was strange to see them in 14 inches of fresh snow but there big smiling faces left me to believe every thing was OK. They told me that they had been stuck for four days and I offered to help them out. They apparently had no money to pay for the damaged chains on my vehicle. Later that night I had a terrible dream that they took me prisoner and held me against my will for 72 hours in a poorly constructed 16x20 cabin on Elliot Ridge. The drug runners had a plantation up there, and a clearing big enough to land a helicopter. The last two chapters of the book are fictional, my dream, in thirty years I've had a lot of strange and ironic events during elk hunting, but not tragic. But it could have been when 3 men took my bull elk at gun point in 1973. They threatened me to step out of my truck. I did not provoke them, I said that "If I come out it won't be empty handed".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Life by Me and My Poetry In-Between By: Marty Slain (Mykos) My life’s had a lot of laughter and love But also tears of frustration and sorrow, A few regrets and way too many whys But I still look forward to my tomorrow In June 2015, at the age of 60, Marty Slain (Mykos) decided to start this book. Her life has been full of ups and downs, challenges faced and overcome, love lost and found, and friends and family encouraged her to share her story. In poetry and prose, Marty spins her unique tale and hopes to encourage others with her positive spirit. Part of a large family, Marty grew up surrounded by faith and love. At eighteen, she discovered she was pregnant and married the baby’s father. The young family tried to make it work. But when her husband became abusive, Marty left him. She was repeatedly unlucky in love, but found happiness in her three children and career in construction and restoration. She and her siblings supported each other through divorces and deaths. Marty had fun in the good times – plenty of dancing, rich friendships, and a wonderful man. When darkness came, however, she had to fight to keep the light in her life. Watching her children face their own struggles in relationships and parenting brought both joy and heartache. In the end, it’s been a wonderful journey of family and friends who have inspired and challenged her. Poems celebrate the love she has lived as well as soberly reflecting the dark times in her life. Sensitive and spirited, Marty’s words will comfort and encourage you. Laughter is important, family is everything, and faith will always bring you through.

The first goal is to explore the difference between fairness and justice in language assessment. The authors distinguish internal and external dimensions of the equitable and just treatment of individuals taking language tests which are used as gatekeeping devices to determine access to education and employment, immigrant status, citizenship, and other rights. The second goal is to show how the extent of test fairness can be demonstrated and improved using the tools of psychometrics, in particular the models collectively known as Rasch measurement. “This book will have an enormous impact on the field of language assessment. Using Rasch analysis models to explore and identify sources of unfairness, the authors make a compelling case for fairness in the design and implementation of language assessment instruments and for justice in the interpretation and use of test results. A real strength of the book is that it guides readers through analytical techniques in an accessible way.” Dan Douglas, Professor Emeritus, Applied Linguistics Program, Iowa State University.
