Download or read book It s Your Word Against Mine written by Sylvester Carrington and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s Your Word Against Mine is a collection of stories by Sylvester Carrington that compares unique cultural words and phrases from his native Barbados with select American terms. Some of these words have a different meaning in his culture, while others are nonexistent when it comes to translation. These simple words migrated with him and he has added those he encountered when he came to live in America. The author’s engaging style of storytelling will grab readers, as he takes them on a cultural journey using a vehicle of simple words to highlight the different aspects of the two cultures he has called home. With amazing skill, he has intricately woven each cultural term and phrase into a narrative that is altogether fascinating, entertaining, educational, and at times, personal and autobiographical. Watch for the highlighted words in italics throughout the book that compare and contrast these two vastly different cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Don Alverzo’s Tweezers is about Gregory Basenfelder’s life growing up, and how he kept a secret during that time about something he did, but felt he could never tell anyone, so he lived with guilt and fear since then. It was a “mortal sin,” and he believed he was going to hell so he fought ideas of doing more mortal sins. “Gregory was really smart and had a great sense of humor, and we were so much in love. He promised to take care of me after I had multiple hip surgeries in 2019, but he got so sick, and, of course, I forgave him.” – Charlotte Basenfelder About the Author Gregory was born in 1952. He grew up as the second son with three brothers in NE Philadelphia, and his parents raised all four sons as “good Catholics.” We met each other in 1987 and married in 1992. We both loved traveling and drove back and forth to California up and down the West Coast from Mexico to North California. He loved trains and built a train set in our living room. We met each other in a recovery meeting and I hired him to work in my dialysis unit where I was the administrator. I fell in love with him after watching him do CPR on one of our patients; he was my hero. We were both nurses, and he eventually transferred to another unit where he became the unit administrator. Our company had annual meetings for all of the administrators and each year we went to a different state, so we always rented a car and traveled around that state wherever that took us. When we drove to California for our vacations, we decided to camp out on our way there several times. We were both involved in recovery.
Download or read book Perjury written by Stan Latreille and published by Crown. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a writer and trial judge poised to join the ranks of Scott Turow and Lisa Scottoline, Perjury is a fast-paced courtroom drama about lies, sexual abuse, and the conflict between law and justice. Jack Brenner, a burned-out public de-fender from Chicago, has left lying clients and political maneuvering behind to take on the more lucrative, predictable routine of a civil lawyer in a small Michigan town. But when the court assigns him to defend a woman accused of perjury, he is swept back into the labyrinth of the criminal justice system--and into a nest of small-town politics, greed, and revenge. His client, Davey Alden, has admitted she lied on the stand, fabricating the incidents when she claimed her husband Joel Alden sexually abused their young daughter. Outraged by Davey's deceit, the town and the legal system have shifted their sympathies to her husband, one of the most powerful men in the county. A quick, open-and-shut trial is expected. Brenner faces a vengeful prosecutor, a political judge, hostility from the press, and overwhelming evidence and public opinion against Davey. Fueled by his growing attraction to his seductive client, Jack Brenner has a case he cannot win and must not lose--for if Davey is convicted, not only will she face time in jail, but her daughter will be surrendered to Joel's custody. And Brenner has reason to believe that even if Davey is guilty of perjury, Joel is far from innocent. Stan Latreille tells a riveting tale of the law as it is practiced behind the closed doors of a judge's chambers and in the public eye--how guilt and innocence, means and ends, morality and justice are served, and failed, by the law.

Book excerpt: The two main occupations in Limoges, Louisiana (population: 905), seem to be spreading juicy gossip and consoling the unfortunate with casseroles. And in this early spring of 1952, there is ample opportunity for both—with sixteen-year-old and pregnant (by the Baptist minister) Olive Nepper, currently languishing in a coma after drinking pop laced with rose poison. But the plight of Olive and her family is hardly the only story spicing up the rumor mill in this small Southern community of unpredictable eccentrics, wandering husbands, and unsatisfied wives—and few local sins will be put right by home cooking. From Michael Lee West comes a beautifully rendered portrait of small-town Southern life, filled with humanity that brilliantly weaves comedy with dark calamity.
