The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder covers all of these areas, with an emphasis on helping children gain new self-understanding and self-acceptance. Meant to be read with a parent, the book addresses questions (“What is ASD?” “Why me?”) a(more...)

Book Believing Bullshit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Law
  • Publisher : Prometheus Books
  • Release : 2011-04-01
  • ISBN : 1616144122
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Believing Bullshit written by Stephen Law and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies eight key mechanisms that can transform a set of ideas into a psychological flytrap. The author suggests that, like the black holes of outer space, from which nothing, not even light, can escape, our contemporary cultural landscape contains numerous intellectual black-holes—belief systems constructed in such a way that unwary passers-by can similarly find themselves drawn in. While such self-sealing bubbles of belief will most easily trap the gullible or poorly educated, even the most intelligent and educated of us are potentially vulnerable. Some of the world’s greatest thinkers have fallen in, never to escape. This witty, insightful critique will help immunize readers against the wiles of cultists, religious and political zealots, conspiracy theorists, promoters of flaky alternative medicines, and others by clearly setting out the tricks of the trade by which such insidious belief systems are created and maintained.

Book The Dumbest Generation

Download or read book The Dumbest Generation written by Mark Bauerlein and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This shocking, surprisingly entertaining romp into the intellectual nether regions of today's underthirty set reveals the disturbing and, ultimately, incontrovertible truth: cyberculture is turning us into a society of know-nothings. The Dumbest Generation is a dire report on the intellectual life of young adults and a timely warning of its impact on American democracy and culture. For decades, concern has been brewing about the dumbed-down popular culture available to young people and the impact it has on their futures. But at the dawn of the digital age, many thought they saw an answer: the internet, email, blogs, and interactive and hyper-realistic video games promised to yield a generation of sharper, more aware, and intellectually sophisticated children. The terms “information superhighway” and “knowledge economy” entered the lexicon, and we assumed that teens would use their knowledge and understanding of technology to set themselves apart as the vanguards of this new digital era. That was the promise. But the enlightenment didn’t happen. The technology that was supposed to make young adults more aware, diversify their tastes, and improve their verbal skills has had the opposite effect. According to recent reports from the National Endowment for the Arts, most young people in the United States do not read literature, visit museums, or vote. They cannot explain basic scientific methods, recount basic American history, name their local political representatives, or locate Iraq or Israel on a map. The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future is a startling examination of the intellectual life of young adults and a timely warning of its impact on American culture and democracy. Over the last few decades, how we view adolescence itself has changed, growing from a pitstop on the road to adulthood to its own space in society, wholly separate from adult life. This change in adolescent culture has gone hand in hand with an insidious infantilization of our culture at large; as adolescents continue to disengage from the adult world, they have built their own, acquiring more spending money, steering classrooms and culture towards their own needs and interests, and now using the technology once promoted as the greatest hope for their futures to indulge in diversions, from MySpace to multiplayer video games, 24/7. Can a nation continue to enjoy political and economic predominance if its citizens refuse to grow up? Drawing upon exhaustive research, personal anecdotes, and historical and social analysis, The Dumbest Generation presents a portrait of the young American mind at this critical juncture, and lays out a compelling vision of how we might address its deficiencies. The Dumbest Generation pulls no punches as it reveals the true cost of the digital age—and our last chance to fix it.

Book Mindfucking

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin McGinn
  • Publisher : Acumen Publishing
  • Release : 2012-07-31
  • ISBN : 9781844655489
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Mindfucking written by Colin McGinn and published by Acumen Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being surrounded by bulls**t is one thing. Having your mind f**ked is quite another. The former is irritating, but the latter is violating and intrusive (unless you give your consent). If someone manipulates your thoughts and emotions, messing with your head, you naturally feel resentment: he or she has distorted your perceptions, disturbed your feelings, maybe even usurped your self. Mindf**king is a prevalent aspect of contemporary culture and the agent can range from an individual to a whole state, from personal mind games to wholesale propaganda. In Mindfucking Colin McGinn investigates and clarifies this phenomenon, taking in the ancient Greeks, Shakespeare and modern techniques of thought control. McGinn assembles the conceptual components of this most complex of concepts - trust, deception, emotion, manipulation, false belief, vulnerability - and explores its very nature. Is philosophy, as a discipline, a type of mindf**k, asks McGinn? Is romantic love a species of mindf**k? The essence is psychological upheaval or disorientation, often abetted by the weaknesses of the victim. Jealousy, insecurity and prejudice can aid the mindf**k. Delusion is the general result, sometimes insanity. How mindf**ked are you? It's hard to say from the inside, but being aware of the phenomenon offers at least some protection.

Knowledge and experience are at the root of survival in troubled times. We do not always know when those times come, so it can be useful to explore the possibilities of living off the grid, becoming independent, and living without water from the faucet, electricity, or internet. In this book, we’ll touch on some of the most important elements of survival, such as: Creating water filters Getting clean, purified water. Staying cool during hot seasons without technology or airconditioning. Surviving in the winter and enduring extreme cold weather. All of these things will be elaborately explained, inspiring you to take action if such action ever becomes necessary. Don’t wait and get this handy-dandy book today! Book 2: This book covers a range of topics that don’t seem to be related at first, but if you look closer, you’ll see the bigger picture. All of these topics are more or less connected to the idea of fending for yourself, being able to survive off the grid, or in case of a major disaster. The first chapter focuses on something specific: Survival in the jungle. As we all know, the jungle is beautiful but also infested with bacteria, bugs, venomous and predatorial animals, and full of both toxic and edible plants. Learning what to do there can make all the difference if you were ever to make it through in such a climate. After this, the book highlights what to do in case of a hurricane or an earthquake, two disasters that could very well happen in many people’s areas. Third, we will talk about food preservation, since this is one of the most important and basic survival skills everyone should have. Last but not least, we’ll go over some self-defense techniques and gadgets people could use to defend themselves if they ever get attacked or cornered. Educate yourself and get this nice, informative book.

Book Why We Need Religion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen T. Asma
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-05-09
  • ISBN : 0190469692
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Why We Need Religion written by Stephen T. Asma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we feel is as vital to our survival as how we think. This claim, based on the premise that emotions are largely adaptive, serves as the organizing theme of Why We Need Religion. This book is a novel pathway in a well-trodden field of religious studies and philosophy of religion. Stephen Asma argues that, like art, religion has direct access to our emotional lives in ways that science does not. Yes, science can give us emotional feelings of wonder and the sublime--we can feel the sacred depths of nature--but there are many forms of human suffering and vulnerability that are beyond the reach of help from science. Different emotional stresses require different kinds of rescue. Unlike secular authors who praise religion's ethical and civilizing function, Asma argues that its core value lies in its emotionally therapeutic power. No theorist of religion has failed to notice the importance of emotions in spiritual and ritual life, but truly systematic research has only recently delivered concrete data on the neurology, psychology, and anthropology of the emotional systems. This very recent "affective turn" has begun to map out a powerful territory of embodied cognition. Why We Need Religion incorporates new data from these affective sciences into the philosophy of religion. It goes on to describe the way in which religion manages those systems--rage, play, lust, care, grief, and so on. Finally, it argues that religion is still the best cultural apparatus for doing this adaptive work. In short, the book is a Darwinian defense of religious emotions and the cultural systems that manage them.
