Book A Local Kid Does Only O K

Download or read book A Local Kid Does Only O K written by Ben L. Bassham and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Local Kid (Does Only O.K.) is a witty and affectionate account of one boy's growing up in Rogers, Arkansas in the late forties and the fifties in the days before malls, credit cards, and big-box stores when people shopped and found entertainment in what is now the "historic" town center. A 1960 graduate of Rogers High School, Bassham recalls his checkered employment history as a soda jerk, dishwasher, fry cook, carpenter, and sports reporter (at age 17) for the old Rogers Daily News. Begun as a family history for his two daughters, this "remembrance" of his home town in the years after World War II grew into something more: a collection of lessons learned at the Presbyterian church; of triumphs and (mostly) disappointments on the gridiron and the basketball court; his brief career as a clarinetist under the spell of local musical prodigy Maxie Gundlach; Ben's love of the cars that graced dealers' showrooms; his devotion to fifties' television shows, and the many hours spent watching movies at the old Victory Theater. A cast of colorful local personalities comes alive in his portraits of town "characters," its leading citizens (including "Cactus" Clark, Joe Bill Hackler, Rev. Robert Moser, Heston Juhre, and others), and the author's eccentric relatives. Junk food consumed, clubs joined and abandoned, favorite "parking" spots, old days at the Monte Ne "Pyramids," and fun times on the White River in pre-Beaver Dam days are also lovingly recalled in this enjoyably off-beat autobiography.

Book What Every 18 Yr Old Needs To Know

Download or read book What Every 18 Yr Old Needs To Know written by Paul from White Lake and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is there so much bipartisan bickering? Why are some folks so darned adamant about their political viewpoints? Should we all actually develop a political belief system? But who really gives a hoot about politics, anyways? Have the schools of this USofA adequately prepared our 18 year olds for one of the important privileges that they can now engage, namely to vote? And even after 18 years old, how and when does each of us actually become EXPERT at selecting our politicians? How can any one person know who to vote for, and does it really make any difference which way we vote? They say that if I don't vote then I have no right to complain about who we get in our government. But that doesn't make any sense, or is it just me? Some say that the MEDIA is biased, but how can that be? They just report the news, don't they? Why won't our government just do more to FIX things and to HELP people? What SHOULD our government REALLY do to help us solve our problems? I've even heard people talk about dark and strange conspiracy theories; about people who are so super rich and powerful, who plan things in secret, and that THEY are the REAL people in control in this world, playing us as if we're all just tokens on a game board ...

Download or read book Fatal Forecast written by Michael J. Tougias and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-07-17 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of catastrophe and survival at sea, Fatal Forecast is a spellbinding moment-by-moment account of seventy-two hours in the lives of eight young fishermen, some of whom would never set foot on dry land again. On the morning of November 21, 1980, two small Massachusetts lobster boats set out for Georges Bank, a bountiful but perilous fishing ground 130 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. The National Weather Service had forecast typical fall weather, and the young, rugged crewmen aboard the Sea Fever and the Fair Wind had made dozens of similar trips that season. They had no reason to expect that this trip would be any different. But the only weather buoy on Georges Bank was malfunctioning, and the National Weather Service had failed to share this fact with the fishermen who depended on its forecasts. As the two small boats headed out to sea, a colossal storm was brewing to the southeast, a furious maelstrom the National Weather Service did not accurately locate until the boats were already caught in the storm's grip, trapped in the treacherous waters of Georges Bank. Battered by sixty-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, the crews of the Fair Wind and the Sea Fever (captained by Peter Brown, whose father owned the Andrea Gail of Perfect Storm fame) struggled heroically to keep their vessels afloat. But the storm soon severely crippled one boat and overturned the other, trapping its crew inside. Meticulously researched and vividly told, Fatal Forecast is first and foremost a tale of miraculous survival. Most amazing is the story of Ernie Hazzard, who managed to crawl inside a tiny inflatable life raft and then spent more than fifty terrifying hours adrift on the stormy open sea. By turns tragic, thrilling, and inspiring, Ernie's story deserves a place among the greatest survival tales ever told. Equally riveting are the stories of the brave men and women from the Coast Guard and the crew of a nearby fishing boat who imperiled their own lives that day in order to save the lives of others. As gripping and harrowing as The Perfect Storm - but with a miracle ending - Fatal Forecast is an unforgettable true story about the collision of two spectacular forces: the brutality of nature and the human will to survive.
