Book excerpt: After an overwhelmingly traumatic incident leaves Paige Caldwell, a young San Diego police officer, crippled with anxiety and distrust, she is determined to maintain control over her world and the people in it. Hidden behind the emotional fortress she has built for herself, Paige allows few people to trespass into her emotions. She no longer sees life in a profusion of hues and saturation, but simply in black and white. Right and wrong. Life and death. Preston Wakefield is the lead singer of the rebounding musical group, Aldengate. At the height of their fame, ten years prior, Aldengates popularity was likened to that of the Beatles, inviting chaos and pandemonium wherever they went. When the group disbanded, each member embarked on their own projects, but eventually reunited a decade later. With their reunion tour selling out stadiums across the country, it was obvious that time had not diminished the fierce loyalty of their fans. When Paiges lifelong friend, and co-worker, Taylor Wellington, asks her to fill an empty spot providing security for an Aldengate concert, she reluctantly agrees. Despite her desire not to allow her anxiety rule her life, the clamor and commotion surrounding the venue leaves her staggering to regain her composure. Finding respite in a small alcove, Paige meets Preston in a chance encounter. Against Taylors cynical assessment of Preston, Paige embarks on a secret courtship with Preston while remaining resolute to avoid the chaos that seems to follow him. As the romance evolves, Preston becomes increasingly irritated with Taylors meddling, threatening to unravel the very fabric of their relationship. When Paige refuses to let go of her best friend in order to save her relationship, Preston must decide if its because of a surreptitious love between them...or something more. Despite her insistence that life is what you make of it, Paige will soon learn that life is not about why you livebut for whom you live.

Book For Whom the Bell Tolls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ernest Hemingway
  • Publisher : Scribner
  • Release : 2019-07-16
  • ISBN : 1476787778

Download or read book For Whom the Bell Tolls written by Ernest Hemingway and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented by Hemingway's grandson Seán Hemingway, with a personal foreword by the author’s son Patrick Hemingway, this new enhanced Library Edition of Ernest Hemingway's masterpiece about an American in the Spanish Civil War features early drafts and supplementary material, including three previously uncollected short stories on war by one of the greatest writers on the subject in history. In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight,” and one of the foremost classics of war literature in history. Published in 1940, For Whom the Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo’s last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise. “If the function of a writer is to reveal reality,” Maxwell Perkins wrote Hemingway after reading the manuscript, “no one ever so completely performed it.” Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author’s previous works, For Whom the Bell Tolls tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. When it was first published, The New York Times called it “a tremendous piece of work,” and it still stands today as one of the best war novels of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ludicrous story about a farcical place. Yoxford University came to the attention of the press some years ago and was dubbed "the home of the strange, the deranged and a small fortune". The university was only in the public eye for a few days then all returned to normal and no more was thought of the press reports, no more that is until the recent death of Professor Richard Chaleskins. The professor died a very bizarre death and apparently by suicide. This was shocking enough for all on campus but they were shocked further the next morning when many received a package in the post that Professor Charleskins had apparently posted just before he took his own life. The packages contained copies of a book he had written and had had privately and secretly printed. The book contained cloaked warnings that the historical press reports of Yoxford's small fortune had attracted the interest of organised crime and that they were now about to pounce. To add emphasis to his warning the copy he sent the university's dean he renamed "for whom the horn doth honk, it honks for thee Basil Friggwynt-Witt.
